9.junija, Maslinica na otoku Šolta
Ur spanja ni bilo prav veliko, a sem kljub temu ob 6.30 zbudil naspan in spočit. Najinih hrvaških prijateljev že ni bilo več in tudi midva sva, jaz po kavi in Lube še po svojem obveznem zajtrku, ob 8.45 odplula proti Hvaru. O Lubetovem zajtrku pa še tole. Imam zelo grdo navado ali razvado, ki je, kot pravijo strokovnjaki, zelo nezdrava: nikoli ne zajtrkujem. In da je stvar še hujša, tudi kosila nimam ob primernem času, ker doma skuhamo in jemo takrat, ko pride Marjeta iz službe, to je navadno med 16.30 in 17.00.
Na potovanju pa se mi je godilo še »bolje« in prehrana je bila povsem prilagojena mojim željam in potrebam, ker sem sočasno zajtrkoval, kosil in večerjal med 20.00 in 23.00. Kako bi lahko imenovali ta obrok, ne vem in tudi ni pomembno, v svojo obrambo naj povem le, da navadno ni bil prav obilen in da sem po njem vedno blaženo zaspal.
Za skeptike: moja telesna višina (vojaška mera) je 184 cm in sedanja telesna teža 88 kg, kar je sicer nad t.i. idealno težo, vendar sem rajši obilnejši kot lačen in zato še bolj siten, kot sem navadno. Vreme je bilo lepo sončno in pihal je rahel severovzhodni veter, tako da sva razvila genovi in se s hitrostjo več kot 7 vozlov naglo bližala Hvaru. Ob 12.00 sva že spustila sidri v hvarškem mandraču in se z gumenjakom pripeljala na obalo.
Na glavnem trgu naju je »pričakala« velika množica turistov in v majhnem barčku, kjer sva si naročila kavo in sok, je med osebjem že vladala živčnost in naveličanost zaradi številnih turistov, ki so motili mir tam zaposlenih. Ob tem sem se spomnil na Marjetino sestrično iz Zagreba, ki mi je povedala hrvaški slogan teh turističnih delavcev: »Dođite nam u što većem broju, a onda što brže otiđite ili, još bolje, pošaljite nam novac i ostanite kod kuće.«
Med enournim ogledom lepega mesta sva si želela ogledati tudi znani hvarski Arsenal, kjer med drugim pomembnimi zgodovinskimi ostalinami hranijo puleno, t.i. »zvir«, krilatega zmaja s hvarske galeje Sveti Jerolim. Ta galeja je skupaj z galejo mesta Koper II Leone pod poveljstvom koprskega plemiča Domenica del Tacca (palača njegove družine še danes stoji v Kopru in je ena najlepših koprskih stavb) in še 12 drugimi galejami iz Istre in Dalmacije sodelovala v največji in najpomembnejši bitki med galejami na Sredozemskem morju, v bitki pri Lepantu, današnjem grškem mestu Naupaktos v Koritskem zalivu. Žal so hvarski Arsenal obnavljali in sva tako ostala pred vrati, ne da bi »zvir« videla v naravi.
Bitka pri Lepantu je bila tako pomembna za današnji videz Evrope, politični in zemljepisni, da sem Lubetu povedal nekaj podatkov o tem pomorskem spopadu, ki sem jih uporabil pri pisanju knjige o pozabljenih starih ladjah Sredozemlja.
V začetku 15. stoletja so Turki že zavzeli vso Malo Azijo in leta 1453 tudi prestolnico bizantinskega cesarstva Konstantinopel ter mesto preimenovali v Istanbul. Pri osvojitvi mesta je imela pomembno vlogo turška mornarica, ki so jo takrat sestavljale predvsem ladje berberskih državic iz Severne Afrike. Ko je vladar Alžirije in pozneje tudi Tunizije Hajrudin Barbarossa leta 1519 priznal turškemu sultanu vso oblast, je v Sredozemlju nastal nov položaj v pomorski trgovini in na političnem zemljevidu.
V obrambo pred turško ekspanzijo je bila zato leta 1538 ustanovljena Sveta liga, to je bila zveza evropskih držav, kjer so imele vodilno vlogo Španija, Benetke, Genova, Sicilija, Malta in seveda Papeška država. Trgovska moč italijanskih mest je takrat močno upadla, in ko so Turki nedvoumno pokazali, da želijo popolno trgovsko prevlado v Sredozemlju, in sanjali o zasedbi Evrope, je bila vojna med Zahodom in Vzhodom neizbežna. V številnih pomorskih in kopenskih spopadih so bili Turki uspešnejši in vse je kazalo, da bo celotno Sredozemlje kmalu pod njihovo prevlado. Ko so nato leta 1570 postali gospodarji Tunizije in še istega leta Benečanom vzeli otok Ciper, se je krščanska Evropa šele zavedela resnosti položaja in za kratek čas so bili pozabljeni dotedanji različni politični interesi evropskih vladarjev –

Sveta liga se je pripravila na dokončen obračun. Turško ladjevje 282 galej s 750 topovi, 13.000 mornarji, 34.000 vojaki, 20 tovornimi ladjami in 41.000 veslači se je pod vodstvom velikega admirala Mujezinzada Alija Paše zasidralo v Korintskem zalivu pred Lepantom in mirno čakalo na sovračno ladjevje.
Ladjevje Svete lige, ki ga je vodil don Juan Avstrijski, nezakonski sin Karla V., se je več mesecev zbiralo v Mesini na Siciliji in nato v polni sestavi 208 galej in šest galeasov s skupaj 1831 topovi, 13.000 mornarji, 28.000 vojaki, 3000 vitezi, 41.000 veslači in 30 tovornimi ladjami odplulo proti Lepantskemu zalivu. Sedmega oktobra 1571 sta si mogočni ladjevji stali nasproti in se v jutranjih urah počasi in v popolni bojni razporeditvi začeli bližati drugo drugemu. Na vseh ladjah so zabobneli vojaški bobni, zavihrale so bojne zastave in pomorska bitka se je začela.
Dolge ure je bil spopad nepopustljiv in neusmiljen, a bojna sreča se je končno obrnila na stran Lige, ko so vojaki z galeje španskega admirala princa Marka Antonija Collone naskočili turško admiralsko ladjo in ubili turškega velikega admirala Alija Pašo in vseh 500 mož posadke. Strašna pomorska bitka se je okoli pete ure popoldan istega dne končala s popolnim porazom turškega ladjevja in sanj Otomanskega cesarstva o prevladi v Sredozemlju in zavzetju Evrope je bilo konec. Kako neusmiljen je bil spopad, povedo tudi podatki o izgubah na obeh straneh. Turki so izgubili 117 galej, nekatere so zmagovalci odvlekli v Mesino, ujetih je bilo 7500 in mrtvih 25.000 turških mornarjev in vojakov, izgube Svete lige so bile veliko manjše, a kljub temu je bilo kar 10.000 mrtvih, 2500 ranjenih, izgubili pa so 12 galej. Vendar so osvobodili več kot 12.000 kristjanov, ki so kot sužnji veslali na turških bojnih ladjah.
Po ogledu mesta Hvar sva odplula proti Korčuli. Vreme je bilo sončno, zaradi ugodnega vetra sva razvila še jadra in ob 19.00 pristala v marini na Korčuli. Po kratkem počitku sva postala hudo

lačna, zato sva se odločila, da si bova takoj skuhala večerjo. Katero jed je mogoče narediti na hitro in jo imava oba rada? Zadostoval je pogled v hladilno skrinjo in odločitev je bila hitra – rižota s piščančjim mesom in šampinjoni.

Med kuho mi je zmanjkalo plina, in ko sem nespretno menjaval plinsko bombico, mi je iz nje ušlo nekaj plina. Ko sem plinski aparat vnovič prižgal, je močno počilo z velikim plamenom, midva pa sva odskočila, kot bi bila na vzmeteh. Pri tem je Lube s komolcem zadel moj TV-aparat in odlomil nosilec, jaz, ki sem bil bližje plamenu, pa sem zasmrdel po zažganih obrveh in prestanem strahu. Po nekaj sekundah popolne tišine, ko sva razmišljala, kaj in zakaj se je to zgodilo, sem sam pri sebi sklenil: nikoli več ne bom na barki kuhal na plin v zaprtem prostoru.
Preživeti strah in stres sva povsem premagala z buteljko črnega in nato zadovoljna in umirjena odšla na večerni ogled starega mestnega jedra Korčule.
V topli noči sva se sprehajala po mestu, ki je bilo videti kot izumrlo, skoraj popolno tišino so le občasno zmotili zamolkli koraki redkih sprehajalcev. Pomislil sem, da je bil v poznih nočnih urah tako tam dolga stoletja, ker so prebivalci po napornem in dolgem dnevu zgodaj legli k počitku in še ni bilo turistov, kafičev, barov, barčkov in diskotek. Tistega dne sva imela zato veliko srečo, da sva ujela nočni utrip starega mesta, takega, kot je bil pred davnimi desetletji in stoletji. Arhitektura mestnih stavb in hiš je prekrasna, gotsko elegantna in težko bi se odločil, katero bi za spomin vzel domov. Največji vtis pa je name vseeno naredila katedrala s prekrasnimi in nenavadnimi, vendar za obdobje njenega nastanka značilnimi kamnitimi skulpturami, predvsem na vhodnem portalu. Lube je pridno fotografiral in upal sem, da bova dobila nekaj res lepih posnetkov.

I did not sleep very long that night but inspite of that I woke up well rested at 6.30 AM. Our Croatian friends were already gone. After my morning coffee and Lube s usual breakfast we lifted anchor at 8.45 AM and sailed toward the island Hvar and the town of the same name. One more comment about Lube`s breakfast: I have a very bad habit which experts claim to be very unhealthy – I, namely, never eat breakfast. To make matters worse, I also do not have lunch at the »normal« time since we cook and eat lunch when my wife comes home from work which is sometime between 4.30 and 5 PM.
Matters got even worse during our journey. My eating habits we subject to the sailing schedule and I ate breakfast, lunch and dinner all at the same time ie between 8 and 11 PM. I have no idea how I could call that meal and it does not matter either. I must add to my defense that the meal was usually not very heavy and I always slept like a baby after eating it.
For the sceptic reader I would like to add that my height, as measured in the army, is 184 cm and current weight is 88 kilos which is slightly above ideal weight but I am rather a little bit heavier than constantly hungry and consequently even more annoying than usual.
The weather that day was nice and sunny with a light northeastern wind which was very favorable for our sailing. We raised genovas and speeded toward Hvar at more than 7 mph. At noon we dropped anchor at the port of the town of Hvar and reached the shore in our tender.
We ran into a large tourist crowd in the main square and rest of the town. In a small bar where we stopped for coffee and a glass of fruit juice we noticed that the personnel were already tired and fed up with such a large number of visitors who dared to disturb their leisure. At that moment I remembered the favorite saying of employees in Croatian tourist industry that my wife`s cousin who lives in Zagreb told me some years ago: »Come visit us in the largest possible number but leave as soon as possible or, even better, just send us the money and stay at home.«
During our one hour stroll through town we wanted to visit the Arsenal, the local naval museum, to see »the beast« which is on display there among many others historical items. The beast is a winged dragon that, centuries ago, adorned the bow of the galley St. Jerolim which, along with another dozen galleys from Istra and Dalmatia, took part in the historic naval battle at Lepanto in the year 1571. One of those galleys was also Il Leone, a galley from the Slovenian coastal town Koper under the command of the local nobleman Domenico del Tacco. The Tacco family palace is still standing today and represents one of the most remarkable buildings in Koper. The battle at the town of Lepanto, known today as Naupaktos, in the bay of Corinth in Greece was the largest naval battle between galleys in the Mediterranean Unfortunately, the Arsenal was being renovated and we could not admire the famous »beast«.
The battle of Lepanto between Christendom and the Turkish empire was of major importance for political and geographical picture of modern Europe. Lube was curious about it and I told him some basic information about the times and the battle itself which I used when I was writing my book about the ancient ships of the Mediterranean.
At the beginning of the 15th century the Turks had already conquered all of Asia Minor and in 1453 the capital of the Byzantine empire Constantinople fell into their hands. They changed its name to Istanbul. Turkish navy consisting primarily of the ships of small Berber tribes from North Africa played an important role in the conquest of Constantinople. When the ruler of Algeria and Tunisia Hirudin Barbarossa ceded his power to the Turkish sultan in 1519 a new political reality emerged in the Mediterranean which greatly affected world trade for the worse for Christian city states on its coast.
As a defense against the Turkish westbound expansion the leading Christian countries on the Mediterranean – Spain, Venice, Genoa, Sicily, Malta and the Papal States – in 1538 formed an alliance called the Holy League. By that time the trading power of the Italian city states had greatly diminished and when the Turkish desire for supremacy in the Mediterranean, as part of their obvious intention of conquering all of Europe, became obvious the war between Christendom and the Ottoman Empire was inevitable. At the beginning of the 16th century, the Turks won numerous land and naval battles and their chances for the conquest of the whole Mediterranean region appeared to be very good. When they conquered Tunis in 1570 and the very same year took Cyprus from the Venetian Republic rule did Europe realize how critical the situation had become. Christian rulers were finally able to set aside their long lasting previous conflicts and competing interests and unite in the face of the Turkish threat.

The Holy League was preparing for the final confrontation on sea.
The Turks by that time gathered an impressive fleet of 282 galleys with 750 guns, 13000 sailors, 34000 soldiers, 20 cargo ships and 41000 oarsmen. The fleet, commanded by the great admiral Mujezinzad Ali Pasha, was anchored in the bay of Corinth near the town of Lepanto waiting for the enemy.
The navy of the Holy League under the command of don Juan of Austria, an illegitimate son of Karl V was gathering in Messina, Sicily for several months until it reached 208 galleys and 6 galleasses with 1831 guns, 13000 sailors, 28000 soldiers, 3000 knights, 40000 oarsmen, 30 cargo ships. Then the fleet sailed toward the bay of Lepanto.
In the morning of October 7th, 1571 the two mighty fleets sighted each other. In combat formation with the drums drumming and battle flags fluttering in the wind the ships moved toward each other and a fierce battle began.
Throughout the morning the outcome of the battle was uncertain until the soldiers from the galley of the Spanish admiral prince Mark Anthony Collona boarded the flagship of the Turkish admiral killing Ali Pasha and all his crew of 500 soldiers. That gave the decisive advantage to the Holy League and the bloody battle ended at around 5 PM when the Turkish fleet withdrew to the East in complete defeat. Thus also ended the dreams of the Ottoman Empire about the conquest of the Mediterranean and all of Europe.
Losses on both sides proved how ferocious and bloody the battle was. The Turks lost 117 galleys, some of which were towed to Messina by the victors, and 25000 soldiers and sailors with 7500 captured men. Casualties of the Holy League were somewhat lower 10000 men dead and 2500 wounded with 12 galleys lost. Christians also managed to free 12000 of their brethren who served as galley -slaves on Turkish ships.
After we finished sightseeing the town of Hvar we returned to our boats and set sail for the nearby island of Korcula. The weather was sunny and the wind favorable so we raised all sails and reached Korcula by 7 PM. After a short rest the hunger got the better of us and we started

preparing dinner on board. What dish that we both like can be cooked very fast? A glance to the freezer was enough for us to decide to make chicken and mushroom risotto.
But there was a snag.
Midway through cooking dinner inside the cabin I ran out of gas and while I was clumsily changing the small container with compressed gas some of it escaped into the air. When I tried to light the gas cooker again we heard a loud bang and saw a big flame that made us jump aside in no time. In the process Lube hit my TV with his elbow and broke the support console while I, who was closer to the fire, had my eyebrows partially burnt. After few seconds of complete silence while we were trying to understand what had just happened and why I firmly decided I would never ever again cook on gas stove in a closed space.
A bottle of red wine with dinner helped us overcome the fear and stress we had just experienced. Our usual happy and mellow selves we headed ashore for a stroll through the old center of the town of Korcula.
In a warm summer night we found ourselves in a town that was almost completely deserted. Only steps of an occasional passer-by disturbed almost complete silence. It occurred to me that this must have been how the town looked late at night for centuries when local population worked long and hard days and then went to bed early in the evening. That was long before the appearance of tourists, coffee houses, bars of all sizes and discos clubs. That night we were very lucky to catch the night pulse of the old town as it must have looked decades and centuries ago. The architecture of the houses was exquisite in its gothic elegance and it was hard to decide which one to single out and remember. Still, I was most impressed by the cathedral with its beautiful stone sculptures especially around its main portal. Although the sculptures are unusual by today`s standards they were quite typical for the time when they were created. Lube took a lot of photographs of the portal and I hoped that we would get some good ones we could share with our friends and readers.
