CAPÍTULO 4
EL lunes, día 10, comenzó con toda normalidad. David salió de su casa. Se encaminó hacia la estación del metro. Caminaba pensando en todo lo que iba suceder en su vida, cuando la oscuridad de la noche todavía no había sido vencida por la luz del nuevo día. Llegó al World Trade Center. Instintivamente dirigió su vista hacia arriba. Las dos moles se elevaban majestuosas con miles de luces chispeando. Se detuvo un momento para contemplarlas. Después entró en el hall y se dirigió hacia la zona de los ascensores.
El día transcurrió sin incidencias que destacar. Al final de la jornada, David sorprendió a John invitándole a tomar un par de copas en el Village. Eran las copas que habían quedado pendientes desde mediados de agosto.
John quedó estupefacto al oír la proposición de David. No había podido imaginar que este momento llegara a producirse nunca. ¿Sería cierto lo que le había contado la madre de David? ¿Sería verdad que pudiera ser el amor la causa de ese cambio tan espectacular? Decidió averiguarlo por sí mismo.
Caminaron conversando alegremente hasta llegar al barrio de los bohemios. Llegaron a “Kenny’s” en Bleecker Street. Habían transcurrido tan solo veinte minutos desde que habían salido del World Trade Center. Entraron en el local. John pidió un bourbon y David una coca-cola light. John se dispuso a abordar el tema directamente.
—¿Cómo se llama ella, David?
—No sé de qué me hablas —contestó David.
—Vamos, hombre. Yo soy tu amigo. Cuéntame cómo la conociste. No seas tan reservado —insistió John.
—Por muchos esfuerzos que hiciera contándotelo, nunca llegarías a comprenderlo. Te lo aseguro —dijo David defendiéndose.
—Te dije que eras un mentiroso espantoso. Se te nota a la legua que tienes un secreto. Tienes algo que no quieres contar.
—Puede que tengas razón —dijo David.
—¿Ni siquiera me lo vas a contar a mí? —volvió a preguntar John.
—Ni siquiera a ti.
—Dime, al menos, si tiene los ojos azules. A mí me encantan los ojos azules —confesó John.
—No son azules, John. Son unos profundos y preciosos ojos negros. No puedo decirte más —contestó David.
—Está bien, amigo mío. No hay que insistir cuando el corazón está de por medio. Solamente dime cómo fue.
—Solo puedo decirte que resultó maravilloso. Dudo de que pudieras entenderlo —volvió a contestar David, escudándose una vez más en la mayor de las ambigüedades.
—De acuerdo, amigo. Te felicito por tu inenarrable experiencia. Quédate con tu inconfesable secreto. Lo comprendo — dijo John.
—Te pido mil disculpas por ello, John. Pero me alegra enormemente que me digas que lo entiendes.
A las dos rondas de David, siguieron otras dos pagadas por John. Y a éstas les siguieron algunas más. Eran las diez de la noche cuando se separaron. John tenía el coche aparcado en el World Trade Center. David le acompañó hacia el aparcamiento, y después caminó hasta la estación de metro.

Chapter four
September 10th began like any other Monday. David left his house and made his way towards the subway station. As he was walking he wondered what the future held for him, the city was still dark, the night refusing to give way to a new dawn. He arrived at the World Trade Center. He instinctively looked up. The two towers rose majestically high above him, adorned with thousands of sparkling lights. He paused for a moment to contemplate them, then went into the entrance hall and headed towards the elevators.
The day came and went like any other. After work, David surprised John by inviting him to go for a few drinks in the Village. The drinks had been on rain check since mid-August.
John was astonished at David’s proposition. He had not expected this plan to ever actually materialize. Could what David’s mother had said be true? Could love really be the reason for this spectacular change? He decided to find out for himself.
They walked together in happy conversation towards the Bohemian neighborhood. Twenty minutes later, they got to Kenny’s on Bleecker Street and went in. John ordered a bourbon and David a Diet Coke. John decided to get straight to the point.
“What’s her name then, David?”
“I have no clue what you’re talking about,” David answered.
“Come on, Buddy. I’m your pal, aren’t I? Tell me how you two met. Don’t be so secretive,” John insisted.
“Even if I tried really hard to explain it all to you, you’d never get it. Trust me,” said David defensively.
“I said you were a lousy liar. It’s patently obvious you have a secret. There’s something you’re not telling me.”
“Maybe you’re right,” said David.
“And you won’t even tell me?” John asked again.
“Not even you.”
“Well at least tell me if she has blue eyes. I have a thing for blue eyes,” John smiled.
“They’re not blue, John. They’re a deep and delirious black. I can’t tell you any more,” was David’s answer.
“Hey that’s fine buddy. I always prefer to take a back seat when the heart is involved anyway. Just tell me how it went.”
“I can only tell you that in the end it was awesome. You just wouldn’t get it,” David repeated, shielding himself once again behind ambiguity.
“Ok, my friend. Congratulations on your indescribable experience. You feel free to keep your inexpressible secret. I get the message,” John said.
“Look, I really am sorry, John. But thanks for understanding; it makes me feel so much better.”
David’s two rounds were followed by another two bought by John. These were capped off with a few more. It was ten o’clock at night when they decided to go their separate ways. John had his car parked at the World Trade Center. David walked him to the parking lot and then went on to the subway station.

I'm a native English speaker (UK) and have been based in Seville (Spain) since 2003, although I make regular trips to the UK. I've been translating professionally since 2007. I am registered self-employed (autónoma) in Spain.
I specialise in business, academic writing, literature, education and tourism. I have translation experience in a wide variety of other fields including technical, IT, and scientific. I am also gradually becoming more specialist in the legal field and can currently work with contracts, notarial documents, Articles of Association and general legal texts. I translated a novel that was published in September 2011, called "A Future in the Past". I have also worked on a number of non-fictional books, which are currently in press.
I hold an MA in Translation studies, BA in Hispanic Studies and French, a letter of credit for the Diptrans from the London Institute of Linguists (two exams passed), and I am currently undertaking a second MA in Legal Translation, part-time from City University. So far I have completed five modules: the principles and practice of legal translation, contracts, company law, property law and commercial law.
I have TRADOS Studio 2011.
Prior to working as a full-time translator I worked in TEFL for 7 years with all ages and levels. During that time I was heavily involved in the organisation of two TESOL Spain conferences in Seville. I also taught Spanish for a year in the community education environment in South Wales. |
