Heraklion
Heraklion constitutes an alloy of different and unique elements more than any other prefecture of Crete, justifying its characterization as the prefecture of contrasts.
Its location in the centre of Crete has determined to a large extent the concentration of the main economic and administrative operations, as well as of the population of the island in the capital city, Heraklion. The city that assembles the one third of the population of Crete is a representative sample of the Cretan culture, mixed with all the expressions and operations of a modern urban centre, since it constitutes at the same time the main commercial harbor of the island and the centre of education, telecommunications, research and technology.
The city of Heraklion has influenced its neighboring regions by determining, inter alia, the developmental of settlements as Gazi, Alikarnassos, Gouves, Malia and Hersonissos that are linearly unfold, at the length of the northern coasts of this prefecture. However, from this northern axis and southerly, the modern character of the big cities still could not inoculate the culture of centuries that is well safeguarded thanks to the terrene. The prefecture is expanded in West up to the sub mountains of the legendary Mountain of Idi, in East up to the foothills of the precipitate mountains in Lassithi, while in South it is girded by the mountain range of Asterousia and Kofina. The hinterland is delimitated by two places that have constituted the setting of great cultures: the anthropomorphous mountain of Giouhta in North and Messara, the largest and most fertile plain of the island in South West. In the centre, the plateaus of the prefecture are cracked by the ravines and the valleys, engraved by the streams and rivers flowing from the mountainous volumes towards the southern coasts of the prefecture.
The variety of landscape at the prefecture of Heraklion reflects the built-up structure and the social-cultural web that were shaped accordingly. Sometimes we meet villages hooked on the tall rocks, or frugal stone-built pastoral installations that are hardly distinguished from the grey limestone of the naked mountains; other times we meet scattered monastery dependencies in the middle of extensive vineyards and olive groves, once more groups of new settlements that replace the old ones, balancing between the old and modern world so that their population can be retained; a population that maintains the hospitality mood and cultural creation that has inherited from his ancestors flourishingly and embellishes everyday routine with modern expressions.

Tout a commencé bien avant la Révolution Française, au coeur de la Bresse où la famille Blanc cultivait la terre depuis plusieurs générations, à Marboz, à Cuet près de Montrevel, puis à Saint-Didier-d’Aussiat.
C’est Jean-Louis Blanc et son épouse, en 1872, qui furent les premiers aubergistes à s’installer à Vonnas près du Champ de Foire.
Principale clientèle de l’époque : les coquetiers qui, arrivant le jeudi au marché en voiture, à cheval, se réchauffaient avec une soupe, puis, leurs achats terminés, s’attablaient devant un copieux casse-croûte.
La soupe était bonne, le bruit s’en répandit de marché en marché.
En 1902, Adolphe Blanc, le fils, qui avait épousé Elisa Gervais, succéda à ses parents. C’est Elisa qui, installée à la cuisine, devait rendre célèbre le nom de la Mère Blanc. Elle avait hérité de sa mère Virginie les secrets d’un art culinaire tout de beurre nourri. La Mère Blanc, dont Curnonsky, Prince élu des gastronomes, écrivit en 1933, qu’elle était « La meilleure cuisinière du monde », avait tout appris d’instinct et par goût. New technology reveals the higher-order structure of DNA.

Results: Scientists developed a tool that makes it possible to map the three-dimensional structure of the entire human genome, shedding light on how six feet of DNA is packed into a cell nucleus about three micrometers in diameter. According to the resulting analysis, chromosomes are folded so that the active genes--the ones this particular cell is using to make proteins--are close together.
Why it matters: Growing evidence suggests that the way the genome is packed in a particular cell is key to determining which of its genes are active. The new findings could allow scientists to study this crucial aspect of gene regulation more precisely.
Methods: Scientists treated a folded DNA molecule with a preservative in order to create bonds between genes that are close together in the three-dimensional structure even though they may be far apart in the linear sequence. Then they broke the molecule into a million pieces using a DNA-cutting enzyme. The researchers sequenced these pieces to identify which genes had bonded together and then used this information to develop a model of how the chromosome had been folded.
Next steps: Scientists plan to study how the three-dimensional structure of the genome varies between different cell types, between different organisms, and between normal and cancerous cells. They also hope that improving the resolution of the technology might reveal new structural properties of the genome. They can currently analyze DNA in chunks comprising millions of bases, but they would like to zero in on sequences thousands of bases long.

Stem cells derived from patients with diabetes provide a new model for studying the disease

Results: Scientists collected cells from patients with type 1 diabetes and turned them into induced pluripotent stem cells, adult stem cells with an embryonic cell's capacity to differentiate into many different cell types. Then they stimulated these cells to differentiate into insulin-producing pancreatic cells.
Why it matters: The stem cells carry the same genetic vulnerabilities that led the patients to develop diabetes. Watching them develop into insulin-producing cells should shed light on the development and progression of diabetes. Researchers may also be able to test new treatments on the developing cells.
Methods: Researchers "reprogrammed" skin cells from two diabetes patients by using a virus to insert three genes involved in normal development. The new genes caused other genes to turn on and off in a pattern more typical of embryonic cells, returning the skin cells to an earlier developmental stage. The scientists then exposed the cells to a series of chemicals, encouraging them to differentiate into insulin-producing cells.
Next steps: The researchers will examine the interaction between the different cell types affected by diabetes: the pancreatic beta cells and the immune cells that attack them. Initially they will study these interactions in a test tube, but ultimately they hope to incorporate the lab-generated human stem cells into mice. This will help scientists understand which cells are affected first. Armed with that knowledge, they could begin developing treatments that involve replacing some of those cells.
