L’impact du projet pour créer un esprit coopératif à partir de la multiplication des semences dans les champs communautaires est très significatif. A chaque fois le groupement était déterminé à reconduire l’activité sur le champ communautaire à partir de la récolte obtenue (même si celle-ci était faible).
La régénération des boutures de manioc est une activité très pertinente dans le territoire de Fizi et Uvira, puisque depuis plusieurs années on n’arrive presque plus à cultiver le manioc (aliment de base), à cause du Virus Mosaïque du manioc (souche Ugandaise, entrée pendant la guerre). La perte de production par le Virus Mosaïque du manioc réduit les rendements à moins d’un tiers. Pour une population dont la ration alimentaire est basée principalement sur le manioc ceci est une catastrophe. La seule option pour y remédier et pour lequel le projet a donc choisi la meilleure stratégie est donc la distribution de boutures de manioc saines des variétés qui résistent mieux à la maladie. L’approche développée par le projet à partir de champs communs (cultivés par un nombre limité de ménages vulnérables) est favorable au contrôle des techniques culturales (par le SENASEM) pendant tout le cycle. Même s’il est trop tôt de parler d’un vraie impact de cette activité puisque les boutures ne sont pas encore distribués au niveau des autres ménages il est fort probable que l’activité aura un impact dans ces milieux (voir plus loin par rapport aux risques liés à la durabilité de cette action).

The project's impact in creating a spirit of cooperation based on seed multiplication in the communal fields is very significant. Each time, the group was determined to repeat the activity in the communal field with the obtained harvest (even if it was meager).
The regeneration of cassava cuttings is a very relevant activity in the Fizi and Uvira territories because for several years now it has been nearly impossible to cultivate cassava (a staple food) due to the cassava mosaic virus (Ugandan strain, appearing in the DRC after the war). The loss of production due to the cassava mosaic virus has reduced crop yield to less than a third of its previous level. In a population whose diet is based mainly on cassava, this has been catastrophic. The only option to remedy the situation, for which the project has therefore chosen the best strategy, is the distribution of healthy cassava cuttings, of the varieties most resistant to the disease. The approach developed by the project, using common fields cultivated by a limited number of vulnerable households, makes it possible for the SENASEM to supervise agricultural techniques throughout the cycle. Although it is too early to speak of this activity's real impact, since the cuttings have not yet been distributed to other households, it is very likely that the activity will have an impact in these areas (read further regarding the risks related to this activity's long-term feasibility). |
