Zwei Operettenkomponisten im New Yorker Exil.

Almost every lovely day, I used to pass a lonesome figure across from our house on Central Park West. Somberly brooding over The Wall Street Journal, he'd sit on a bench, at his feet a bag with potatoes, cabbage, sausage, or some such foodstuffs.
The lonesome figure was Emmerich Kálmán; the passerby, Robert Stolz. Two operetta composers in their New York exile. Nevertheless, they had little in common. While Stolz, conducting in the US, became the ambassador of Austrian music, Emmerich Kálmán sat lonesome on his park bench, uprooted like countless émigrés of World War II.
When Robert Stolz inquired why he didn't compose anymore, he replied: " 'Emmerich Kálmán… composes on order only.' He wasn't starving, though. Emmerich used to be very thrifty and had a great talent for stock transactions."
While a Kálmán overture usually opens with a sweeping maestoso, the overture of his biography opens rather muted. After all, with no other operetta composer is the contrast between life and work as pronounced. He isn't known as the melancholic master of the light muse for nothing. And there's nothing better to illustrate that than the image of the lonesome composer on a New York park bench. The legend of the melancholiac who wrote lighthearted music is as inseparable from Kálmán as that of the "grim genius" who composed only "on order" or that of the thrifty man who made a fortune on the stock exchange. Emmerich Kálmán was a man of contradictions. In his work, they became singularly productive, exceptionally in his genre, and in none of his operettas as much as in Die Csárdásfürstin. There's hardly a work in musical theater that better captures the mood of World War I. In spite of all lightheartedness, it is the Armageddon operetta par excellence, disaster music despite all its popularity: laughter under tears!
