File Formats and How to Share with Your Friends
With the new Microsoft Open Office file format XLSX (.xlsx) you can integrate better with other programs such as Open Office or other types of comparable office prod¬ucts. You can also integrate better with other types of data, such as if you want to copy pictures or your Christmas wish list to a blog, Amazon.com. eBay, or other places. As you grow your Excel 2007 skills and want to connect to data sources such as Access, SQL database, or others, it is easier than ever with Excel 2007. You can even begin by clicking on the Data tab of the Office 2007 Ribbon. So what this means, ladies, is more room for pictures of all the wish list items you have and room for music and video lists. So the next time you make a wish list on Overstock.com, you can put that list on your desktop and save it for later use. But this also means that if you want your friends and coworkers (who may not have been as lucky as you to have gotten a copy of Excel 2007) to be able to read the spreadsheets you create, you will have to save in the 97-2003 format. Some things might change (such as shading or font styles that were unavailable in older versions of Excel) but most of what you see, they will see.
In order to save properly, click on the Office Pearl from Figure 1-1 and choose the Save As option (Figure 1-9) from the drop-down menu. Once you click on the Save As option, you will see a window like the one in Figure 1-10 come up. This window is where you can make sure you are saving to the right location, with the right name, and to the right format (pay close attention here or your friends can't see it!), as shown by the bottom arrow of Figure 1-10.
Review Before You Print
Now you know the value that has been added into Excel 2007, but how about print¬ing? After all your effort you'd like to share your work with your colleagues and man¬ager. With Excel 97 there was something called Page Break Preview view, which helped you see (in a small font, which you couldn't really read) what your work would look like. Well, when you take a look at your workbook with Page Layout view you see exactly what your work will look like. The cool thing with Page Layout view (Figure 1-11) now is that you can change your workbook's margins, so they fit better on a printed page; and add and edit headers and footers, so you can put the confi¬dential lines, page numbers, and dates in that you forgot. And most importantly, edit your data.
Online Help
There is ample help inside Excel 2007, but if you need more for the project you are doing, there is also ample help online. You can click on the question mark on the top-right side of the screen (Figure 1-12).
Figure 1-12 shows a great place to find help about anything you are trying to do. You can also visit http://Office.Microsoft.com, where you will find the same Ribbon feel and be able to navigate to get the updates and help you need. For updates you can click on the Office Pearl and go down to the Excel options. When you click on Excel 2007 Options, the Excel Options window appears (Figure 1-13). From this window you can select Resources from the left side and check for updates online. In most cases you will be automatically notified that updates are available from Microsoft for your product. What you can expect from these updates are mainly bug fixes, so when you find something and let Microsoft know, the Excel team captures the most important ones based on number of occurrences and amount of impact, and fixes them and sends out updates

FOLLOWING THE HERD
The Reverend Jim Jones was the founder and leader of the Peo-ple’s Temple. In 1978 Jones, facing charges of tax evasion, moved most of his one thousand followers from San Francisco to a small settlement in Guyana, which he named Jonestown. Facing a federal investigation for re- ported acts of child abuse and torture, Jones decided that his followers should poison their children and then themselves. They prepared vats of poison. A few people resisted; a few others shouted out their protest, but they were silenced. Following Jones’s orders, and the social pressures im- posed by one another, mothers and fathers duly poisoned their children. Then they poisoned themselves. Their bodies were found arm in arm, ly- ing together.1
Econs (and some economists we know) are pretty unsociable creatures. They communicate with others if they can gain something from the en- counter, they care about their reputations, and they will learn from others
if actual information can be obtained, but Econs are not followers of fash- ion. Their hemlines would not go up and down except for practical rea- sons, and ties, if they existed at all in a world of Econs, would not grow narrower and wider simply as a matter of style. (By the way, ties were orig- inally used as napkins; they actually had a function.) Humans, on the other hand, are frequently nudged by other Humans. Sometimes massive social changes, in markets and politics alike, start with a small social nudge. Humans are not exactly lemmings, but they are easily influenced by the statements and deeds of others. (Again by the way, lemmings do not really commit mass suicide by following one another into the ocean. Our widely shared and somewhat defamatory beliefs about lemmings are based on an all-too-human urban legend—that is, people believe this because they are following other people. By contrast, the tale of mass suicide at Jonestown is no legend.) If you see a movie scene in which people are smiling, you are more likely to smile yourself (whether or not the movie is funny); yawns are contagious, too. Conventional wisdom has it that if two people live to- gether for a long time, they start to look like each other. This bit of folk wisdom turns out to be true. (For the curious: they grow to look alike partly because of nutrition—shared diets and eating habits—but much of the effect is simple imitation of facial expressions.) In fact couples who end up looking alike also tend to be happier!
In this chapter, we try to understand how and why social influences work. An understanding of those influences is important in our context for two reasons. First, most people learn from others. This is usually good, of course. Learning from others is how individuals and societies develop. But many of our biggest misconceptions also come from others. When social influences have caused people to have false or biased beliefs, then some nudging may help. The second reason why this topic is important for our purposes is that one of the most effective ways to nudge (for good or evil)
is via social influence. In Jonestown, that influence was so strong that an entire population committed suicide. But social influences have also cre- ated miracles, large and small. In many cities, including ours, dog owners now carry plastic bags when they walk their dogs, and strolling through the park has become much more pleasant as a result. This has happened even though the risk of being fined for unclean dog walking is essentially zero. Choice architects need to know how to encourage other socially beneficial behavior, and also how to discourage events like the one that oc- curred in Jonestown.
Social influences come in two basic categories. The first involves infor- mation. If many people do something or think something, their actions and their thoughts convey information about what might be best for you
to do or think. The second involves peer pressure. If you care about what other people think about you (perhaps in the mistaken belief that they are paying some attention to what you are doing—see below), then you might go along with the crowd to avoid their wrath or curry their favor.
For a quick glance at the power of social nudges, consider just a few re-
search findings:
1. Teenage girls who see that other teenagers are having children are more likely to become pregnant themselves.*
2. Obesity is contagious. If your best friends get fat, your risk of gaining weight goes up.
3. Broadcasters mimic one another, producing otherwise inexplicable fads
in programming. (Think reality television, American Idol and its sib- lings, game shows that come and go, the rise and fall and rise of science fiction, and so forth.)
4. The academic effort of college students is influenced by their peers, so much so that the random assignments of first-year students to dormi- tories or roommates can have big consequences for their grades and hence on their future prospects. (Maybe parents should worry less about which college their kids go to and more about which roommate they get.)
5. Federal judges on three-judge panels are affected by the votes of their colleagues. The typical Republican appointee shows pretty liberal vot- ing patterns when sitting with two Democratic appointees, and the typ- ical Democratic appointee shows pretty conservative voting patterns when sitting with two Republican appointees. Both sets of appointees show far more moderate voting patterns when they are sitting with
at least one judge appointed by a president of the opposing political party.2
The bottom line is that Humans are easily nudged by other Humans. Why? One reason is that we like to conform.

THE MORAL REQUIREMENTS OF ‘EDUCATION’
The second way in which ‘education’ is different from ordinary cases of tasks and achievements is that it is inseparable from judgements of value. It is, as I have pointed out, a logical truth that any method of education employed by a teacher must put the pupil in a situation where he is learning, where some sort of task is presented to him. But a teacher might try to condition children to ‘pick up’ certain things without their realizing that they were picking anything up. In saying that this is not a process of education we would be implying that this was morally bad, because conditions of wittingness and voluntariness on the part of the pupil were missing; for we regard it as morally unjustifiable to treat others in this way. To say that we are educating people commits us, in other words, to morally legitimate procedures. Often such minimal moral demands, which are connected with respect for persons, are further extended to exclude procedures such as giving children orders, which is [:3] thought by some to involve some sort of moral indignity. Discouragement of individual choice would be another procedure which many might condemn as being morally reprehensible. They might express their disapproval by saying that this was not ‘education’.
The way in which moral considerations enter into the achievement aspects of education is clearer than the way in which they enter into the task aspect. For it is obvious enough that the achievements or states of mind that give content to the notion of an educated man must be regarded as valuable. Finding a thimble that has been hidden is a Rylean type of achievement: but it is a trivial one. The achievements involved in education cannot be of this type. For if something is to count as ‘education’, what is learnt must be regarded as worth-while just as the manner in which it is learnt must be regarded as morally unobjectionable; for not all learning is ‘educational’ in relation to the content of what is learnt. If it were we might have periods on the time-table devoted to astrology and to Bingo and homilies by headmasters on the art of torture.
In this respect, also, ‘education’ is like ‘reform’; for it would be as much of a contradiction to say ‘My son has been educated but has learnt nothing of value’ as it would be to say ‘My son has been reformed but has changed in no way for the better.’ This, by the way, is a purely conceptual point. The connexion between ‘education’ and what is valuable can be made explicit without commitment to content. It is a further question what the particular standards are in virtue of which achievements are thought to be of value and what grounds there might be for claiming that these are the correct ones. It may well be that arguments can be produced to show why rational men should value some standards rather than others; but at the moment there is no such established harmony. So when people speak of ‘education’ it is essential to know what their standards of valuation are in order to ascertain the aspect under which some process or state of mind is being commended.
This connexion with commendation does not, of course, prevent us from speaking of ‘poor’ education when a worth-while job has been botched or of ‘bad education’ when we think that much of what people are working at is not worth-while, though it is a nice question to determine at what point we pass from saying that something is ‘bad education’ to saying that it is not education at all. Neither does it prevent us from using the word in a purely external descriptive way when we speak of an ‘educational system’ just as we can use the [:4] term ‘moral’ of someone else’s code without committing ourselves to the judgements of value of those whose code it is. Anthropologists can talk of the moral system of a tribe; so also can we talk as sociologists or economists of the educational system of a community. In employing the concept in this derivative sense we need not think that what is going on is worth-while, but members of the society, whose system it is, must think it is.
Talk of ‘education, then, from the inside of a form of life, is inseparable from talk of what is worth-while, but with the additional notion written into it that what is worth-while has been or is being transmitted in a morally unobjectionable manner. But under this general ægis of desirability ‘education’ picks out no one type of task or achievement. People differ in their estimates of desirability. They therefore differ in the emphasis which they place on achievement and states of mind that can be thought of as desirable. This diversity is what makes talk of ‘aims of education’ apposite; for people who talk in this way are not suggesting aims extrinsic to education: They are enunciating their priorities in giving content to the notion of an ‘educated man’.
To take a parallel: it might be said that the aim of reform was to make men better. This is harmless enough provided that it is realized that ‘making men better’ is built into the concept of ‘reform’ But something more specific might be said such as the aim of reform is to encourage a sense of responsibility. This might be countered by saying that the aim of reform is to get people to have respect for persons. Such a dispute would be an attempt to give precise content to the general notion of ‘making a man better’. Similarly discussions about the aims of education are attempts to give more precise content to the notion of the ‘educated man’ or of a man who has achieved some desirable state of mind. Is moral education more important, for instance, than the development of scientific understanding? This might have particular point when talking about some of the children referred to in the Newsom Report. Or perhaps we talk about ‘wholeness’ in order to emphasize all-round excellence and sensitivity. Or we may want to stress the importance of cutting the coat of what is worth-while according to the cloth of individual aptitude. Talk of developing the potentialities of the individual is then appropriate. Such ‘aims’ point out specific achievements and states of mind which give content to the formal notion of ‘the educated man’ which is a short-hand for summarizing our notion of a form of life which is [:5] worth-while enough to deserve being handed on from generation to generation.2
So much, then, for the moral aspect of ‘education’ as a family of tasks and achievements which make it rather different from the simpler cases used by Ryle to illustrate this way of conceiving of certain classes of intentional activities. I want now to consider other criteria of ‘being educated’ as an achievement which have to do with knowledge and understanding. I shall then deal with the tasks which lead up to achievements falling under these criteria.

Getting Started
Start the lesson by viewing the finished animated zoo kiosk. You’ll create the kiosk by adding sound and video files to a project in Flash.
1 Double-click the 07End.swf file in the Lesson07/07End folder to play the animation.
View the movie of the polar bear with a short soundtrack of an African beat. A
zoo director appears on the screen, speaks, and then disappears.
2 Click a sound button to hear an animal sound.
3 Click a thumbnail button to view a short movie about the animal.
In this lesson, you’ll import audio files and put them on the Timeline to provide the short audio flourish. You’ll also learn how to embed sounds in each button. You’ll use the Adobe Media Encoder to compress and convert the video files to the appro- priate format for Flash. You’ll also learn how to work with transparent backgrounds
in video to create the silhouetted zoo director video.
1 Double-click the 07Start.fla file in the Lesson07/07Start folder to open the initial project file in Flash.
2 Choose File > Save As. Name the file 07_workingcopy.fla, and save it in the
07Start folder. Saving a working copy ensures that the original start file will be available if you want to start over.
¶Understanding the Project File
The initial setup of the project has been completed except for the audio and video portions. The Stage is 1000 x 700 pixels. A row of buttons of colorful animals is on the bottom row, another set of buttons on the right, a title at the top, and a back-
ground image of a resting lion.
The Timeline contains several layers that separate the different content.
The bottom three layers, called background photo, title, and bottom navbar, contain design elements, text, and images. The next two layers above, called buttons and sound buttons, contain instances of button symbols. The content layer contains several labeled keyframes, and the actions layer contains ActionScript that provides the event handlers for the bottom row of buttons.¶If you’ve completed the previous chapter, you should be familiar with the structure
of this Timeline. The individual buttons on the bottom row are coded so that when the user clicks a button, the playhead moves to a corresponding labeled keyframe. You’ll be inserting content into each of those keyframes. But first you’ll learn to
work with sound.
Using Sounds
You can import several types of sound files into Flash. Flash supports MP3, WAV, and AIFF files, which are three common kinds of sound formats. When you import sound files into Flash, they are stored in your Library. You can then drag the sound files from the Library on to the Stage at different points along the Timeline to syn-
chronize those sounds to whatever may be happening on the Stage.
Importing Sound Files
You’ll import several sound files in the Library to be used throughout this lesson.
1 Choose File > Import > Import To Library.
2 Select the Monkey.wav file in the Lesson07/07Start/Sounds folder, and click
Open (Windows) or Import To Library (Mac OS).
The Monkey.wav file appears in your Library. The sound file is indicated by a unique icon, and the preview window shows a waveform—a series of peaks and valleys that represent the sound.
3 Click the Play button on the far upper-right corner of the Library preview window.
The sound plays.
4 Double-click the sound icon in front of your Monkey.wav file.
The Sound Properties dialog box appears, providing information on your sound file, including its original location, size, and other technical properties.
5 Choose File > Import > Import To Library and select the other sound files to import into your Flash project. Import Elephant.wav, Lion.wav, Africanbeat. mp3, and Afrolatinbeat.mp3.
Your Library should contain all the sound files.
6 Create a folder in your Library and place all the sound files inside it to organize your Library. Name the folder sounds.
