Martins Schauspieler-Karriere begann mit “The Pipercompany”, einer Amateur-gruppe, die an Wochenenden in Birmingham Theater für Kinder machte. Er hatte damals in einer Eisengießerei einen Bürojob. Sein Geld gab er hauptsächlich für Theaterbesuche in Stratford aus, wohin er dreimal die Woche fuhr.
Eines Tages beschloß Martin, selbst ein richtiger Schauspieler zu werden. Schnell wurde er zum Star-Student der London Academy of Art und verließ nach drei Jahren mit einem Diplom in der Tasche die Schule.

Martin’s acting career began with the Piper Company, a community theater group that provided children’s theater on weekends in Birmingham. Back then he held a desk job at a steel mill. He started driving to Stratford three times a week, where he’d mostly spend his money on visits to the theater.
One day Martin decided that he himself would become a professional actor. Before long he was known as the star pupil at the London Academy of Arts. He graduated three years later, and left the school with his diploma in his back pocket.

Eine unbeschreibliche Freude überkam uns, während wir mit jeder Minute unseren Abstand zum Lager vergrößerten. In diesen Augenblicken kam uns der Begriff “Freiheit” so recht zum Bewuß tsein. Das Glücksgefühl über den gelungenen Ausbruch beflügelte unsere Schritte, und wir begannen vor Freude zu laufen.
“Was werden die für Augen machen, wenn sie merken, daß zwei fehlen”, frohlockte Heinz, als wir endlich verschnauften.
“Den Sargeanten möchte ich sehen, wenn er feststellt, daß ich ihm schon wieder durchgegangen bin”, entgegnete ich “aber ein verdammtes Gefühl in der Kehle war das, als er vorhin auf uns zukam. Und noch sind wir in bedrohlicher Nähe des Lagers, hoffentlich kommt bald ein Auto und nimmt uns mit.”

We were overcome with an indescribable joy, as with each minute the camp grew smaller in the distance. In these moments we truly comprehended the concept of “freedom”. The excitement over our successful escape gave our stride wings, and we started running with elation.
“Their eyes are going to pop out of their heads when they realize that two people are missing”, Heinz rejoiced as we finally caught our breath.
“I’d like to see the sergeant’s face when he realizes that I’ve run out on him again,” I replied, “I got such a horrible lump in the throat when he was coming toward us earlier. And yet we’re still menacingly close to the camp, I sure hope a car comes by soon and picks us up.”
