Ever since insulin was first identified as the key to restoring normal glucose levels in people with diabetes, doctors and patients have been hoping for an alternative to insulin injections. Don't get us wrong, injecting insulin works pretty well. Many people have been able to lead relatively normal lives because of it. We have pretty advanced syringe and needle technology and insulin pens and pumps have made getting insulin into the body even easier. Even so, the quest continues to find an alternative way of administering insulin.
Scientists have been working on a number of new advances in insulin administration.
Transdermal (through the skin)
Our skin is a remarkable organ. It's very good at letting almost nothing in, and letting just a few selected things out. Patches to help people quit smoking have made it seem almost easy to deliver a drug through the skin. In fact, nicotine is a small molecule that is readily absorbed into the skin. It only takes a tiny amount to have an effect on the body. Insulin on the other hand, is far too large to get through the skin without a lot of help. Trying to change that is tough.
Scientists have been working on patches using electrical currents, ultrasound waves, and chemicals to help transport insulin through the skin. Although some companies are hoping to develop products that could provide boluses of insulin through the skin for mealtime, any success for transdermal delivery is likely to come with basal delivery of relatively small amounts over time. Either way, we have a while to wait before insulin patches might be available in pharmacies.

Our busy lifestyles have created a booming industry for restaurants and takeaway outlets. Many of us no longer have time to prepare meals and with the variety of foods you can buy it's a great way to eat. We spend more than 27 cents in every dollar of household food expenditure on eating out and takeaway meals!
But such convenience also causes problems. Every year, around 2 million Australians are afflicted by some type of illness from eating foods. How do you know if the food you're about to eat is safe?
There are bacteria that can cause food related illness. Salmonella is one you may have heard of. These bacteria can either be present on the food to begin with, or can be placed there, through bad handling, storage, or preparation of food.
Common types of food which bacteria thrive on include meat, chicken, seafood, dairy products, eggs and even cooked rice. These types of products are full of proteins and nutrients – and just like us, bacteria love such energy foods.
The risk of food borne illness is virtually eliminated, if foods are handled properly, and eaten immediately. When eating out or purchasing takeaway food, always check for the following:
• Cleanliness of staff and surroundings.
• Temperature control. Perishable foods should be kept and stored in a very hot (steaming hot) or very cold (refrigerator cold).
• Foods like chicken and hamburgers should be cooked right through.

The 2009 Victorian Bushfire Fund to assist individuals and communities affected by
devastating bushfires in Victoria has been launched by the Premier John Brumby in
partnership with Red Cross and the Federal Government.
An independent panel made up of community leaders will oversee the appeal Fund's
operation. The panel will be chaired by the Hon. John Landy AC who will oversee the urgent
preparation of criteria for distribution of the appeal funds to affected people.
Donations are continuing to flow in via the website and phone, and there has also been an
overwhelmingly generous response from corporate Australia. Donations can be made using
our secure online donations form or by phoning 1800 811 700.
Red Cross Response to Some of Your Common Questions About
Your Donations
• More than 180 lives lost with the number expected to increase as authorities access
more homes and discover vehicles in which people attempted to escape the fires.
• Our biggest role now is personal support, offering assistance to people returning
home and coming to terms with the magnitude of the disaster.
• Currently we are involved in the response phase providing temporary
accommodation and food in 18 evacuation centres. We have registered more than
10,000 people in person, and provided thousands of first aid treatments.
• We have a team at Kinglake with medical supplies and food -- they are visiting a
community who chose not to leave when the fires came through and who have not
had any contact since. Priorities will be medical help, food and registering their
names so family and friends know they are safe and well.
