GONORRHEA
PATIENT INFORMATION SHEET
What is Gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection. This means that you get it by having oral, anal, or vaginal sex with someone who has gonorrhea. It is caused by a type of bacteria that can cause infections in the mouth, throat, eyes, and anus. Rarely, it can also cause infections elsewhere in the body.
How do you get Gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is spread through contact with an infected vagina, penis, anus, or mouth. It is spread during unprotected sexual contact with a partner who has it. Touching infected sex organs, like the vagina or penis, and then touching your eyes can cause an eye infection. It cannot be passed by simply shaking hands or sitting on a toilet seat. Gonorrhea can also be passed from an untreated pregnant woman to her baby during the birth process. In babies, gonorrhea infection may cause eye, joint or other serious infections.
Who is at risk for Gonorrhea?
Any sexually active person can be infected with Gonorrhea.
What are the symptoms of Gonorrhea?
Most women who have Gonorrhea have no symptoms. When symptoms are present, a man or woman may have pain or burning when urinating. Women may also develop a yellow or green vaginal discharge, heavy or irregular vaginal bleeding, pain during sex or lower abdominal pain. Women with gonorrhea are at risk of developing serious complications from the infection, whether or not there are symptoms. Men may notice a yellow or green liquid discharge from the penis, or pain and swelling of one or both testicles. Men and women with an anal infection may have symptoms that include discharge, pain, bleeding, or itching of the anus, and painful bowel movements. Infections in the throat may cause a sore throat but usually cause no symptoms. With an eye infection, symptoms may include redness, itching, pain, or thick yellow/green discharge from the eye.
Are there tests for gonorrhea?
Yes. The doctor will take a swab of the urethra (inside of the penis) in men or a swab of the cervix in women. In some cases, a special urine test may be used to detect this infection. Swabs may also be taken from the throat, eye, and anus of there are symptoms. Testing will be done by the clinic to see which is the best antibiotic to treat you.
How is gonorrhea treated?
Antibiotics (pills or injections or both) are used to cure gonorrhea. Many people who have gonorrhea also have another sexually-transmitted infection called Chlamydia. Doctors often give a combination of antibiotics to treat both infections at the same time. If symptoms continue after receiving treatment, return to the clinic to see the doctor. If you have Gonorrhea, all of your sexual partners must get tested and treated, even if they don’t have any symptoms. Also avoid sexual contact until you and your partners have been treated and cured. The medications are FREE at any pharmacy with the appropriate prescription and a valid provincial health card.
How will I know if the infection is gone after treatment?
Because of the high cure rate, routine testing after treatment is not recommended for most people. However, for the following patients, it is recommended that a repeat gonorrhea test is done FOUR weeks or more after finishing the medication:
- pregnant women
- any patient who didn’t take the medication properly
- any patient who vomited the dose of medication and is not sure if it was absorbed
- any patient who continues to have symptoms
- any patient who had unprotected sex with an infected partner before both were treated.
This follow-up test will let you know if the treatment was effective, and if the gonorrhea infection is gone. This follow-up test should not be done until 4 weeks or more after the end of the treatment, unless you still have symptoms.
What happens if gonorrhea is NOT treated?
Gonorrhea that is not treated can cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) in women, which is a painful infection of a woman's reproductive area (uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries). This can lead to infertility (inability to have children) or a serious condition called “ectopic pregnancy” (when a fertilized egg is deposited outside the uterus). Gonorrhea can also cause widespread infection to other parts of the body.
Can gonorrhea cause problems during pregnancy?
Yes. A pregnant woman with untreated gonorrhea may be at risk for premature delivery. The baby may become infected when passing through the birth canal during delivery. This can cause eye infections, joint infection, or a serious blood infection in the baby. Treatment of gonorrhea as soon as it is found in pregnant women will reduce the risk of these health problems to both mother and child. If you are pregnant, or think you may be, tell your doctor or nurse, so the correct antibiotic can be prescribed.
What do I need to remember?
- Take all medications as directed.
- Ensure that all your current and recent partners are also treated (the clinic staff are able to contact your partners anonymously, in order to have them tested and treated without revealing your identity).
- A past history of gonorrhea does not protect you from getting infected again.
- Proper use of a condom will decrease the risk of most sexually-transmitted infections.

Es causada por un tipo de bacteria que puede causar infección en la boca, garganta, ojos y ano. En raras ocasiones también puede causar infecciones en otras partes del cuerpo.
¿Como se adquiere la gonorrea?
La gonorrea se disemina a través del contacto sexual con una vagina, pene, ano o boca infectados. Se trasmite durante el contacto sexual desprotegido con un compañero que la tiene. El tocar órganos sexuales infectados, como la vagina o el pene y luego tocarse los ojos puede producir una infección ocular. No puede trasmitirse por el simple saludo de mano ni sentándose en un asiento de excusado. La gonorrea puede trasmitirse también de una mujer embarazada sin tratamiento hacia su bebé durante el parto. En los bebés, la gonorrea puede causar infecciones de los ojos, articulaciones y otras graves infecciones.
¿Quién se encuentra en riesgo de adquirir gonorrea?
Cualquier persona sexualmente activa puede infectarse con gonorrea.
¿Cuáles son los síntomas de la Gonorrea?
La mayoría de las mujeres que tienen gonorrea no tienen síntomas. Cuando se presentan los síntomas, el hombre o la mujer pueden tener dolor o ardor al orinar. Las mujeres también pueden tener un flujo vaginal verde o amarillo, sangrado vaginal irregular o abundante, dolor durante el sexo o bien dolor abdominal bajo. Los médicos con frecuencia dan una combinación de antibióticos para tratar ambas infecciones a la vez. Si los síntomas persisten después de recibir tratamiento, regrese usted a la clínica a ver al médico. Si usted tiene gonorrea, todas sus parejas sexuales deben ser examinadas y tratadas, aunque no presenten ningún síntoma. También evite el contacto sexual hasta que usted y sus parejas hayan sido tratadas y curadas. Los medicamentos son GRATUITOS en cualquier farmacia con la receta adecuada y una tarjeta provincial de salud válida.
¿Cómo sabré si la infección desapareció con el tratamiento?
Debido a la alta tasa de curación, no se recomienda el examen rutinario después del tratamiento en la mayoría de los casos. Sin embargo, en los siguientes pacientes se recomienda hacer un nuevo examen de gonorrea CUATRO o más semanas después de terminar el medicamento:
- mujeres embarazadas
- cualquier paciente que no tomó el medicamento adecuadamente
- cualquier paciente que vomitó su dosis del medicamento y no está seguro de si fue absorbido
- cualquier paciente que continua teniendo síntomas
- cualquier paciente que tuvo sexo sin protección con un compañero infectado antes de que ambos fueran tratados.
Este examen de seguimiento le permitirá a usted saber si el tratamiento fue efectivo, y si la infección por gonorrea ya desapareció. Este examen de seguimiento no deberá de hacerse sino hasta después de cuatro semanas o más después del fin del tratamiento a menos que continúe usted teniendo síntomas.
¿Qué pasa si NO se le da tratamiento a la gonorrea?
La gonorrea que no es tratada puede causar Enfermedad Pélvica Inflamatoria (EPI) en la mujer, la cual es una dolorosa infección del área reproductiva de la mujer (útero, trompas de Falopio, y ovarios). Esto puede producir infertilidad (incapacidad para tener hijos) o a un padecimiento grave denominado “embarazo ectópico” (cuando un huevo fertilizado se deposita fuera del útero). La gonorrea puede también causar infección diseminada a otras partes del cuerpo.
¿Puede causar problemas durante el embarazo la gonorrea?
Sí. Una mujer embarazada con gonorrea sin tratar puede estar en riesgo de parto prematuro. El bebé puede infectarse a través del canal del parto durante el mismo. Esto puede producir infecciones oculares, infecciones articulares, o graves infecciones sanguíneas en el bebé. El tratamiento de la gonorrea tan pronto como se detecte en la mujer embarazada reducirá el riesgo de estos problemas de salud tanto para la madre como para el bebé. Si está usted embarazada o piensa que puede estarlo, dígale a su médico o enfermera para que le puedan prescribir el antibiótico correcto.
¿Qué necesito recordar?
- Tome todos los medicamentos como están indicados.
- Asegúrese de que todas sus parejas actuales y recientes sean tratadas también (el personal clínico es capaz de hacer contacto de manera anónima con sus parejas con objeto de examinarlos y tratarlos sin revelar la identidad de usted).
