La idea de frontera ha estado atada en los dos últimos siglos a los límites espaciales del Estado-nación. Los historiadores, hasta hace poco tiempo, asumieron esta máxima proponiendo esta figura histórica como medida de todas las cosas. No en vano su profesión fue durante mucho tiempo vocera principal en la construcción de las identidades nacionales. Sin embargo, en los últimos años afluye una nueva literatura que habla de historias locales, regionales, trasnacionales o hasta globales a modo de réplicas a un modo de hacer historia que se entiende como superado. Hoy en día la historia nacional parece un resuello del pasado.
Para explicar las claves que han puesto en cuestión la idea de los Estados-nación contemporáneos nos apoyamos en un concepto ampliado de frontera tratando de revelar los problemas historiográficos que supone trabajar con un marco espacial tan delimitado. Tomamos los casos de Francia y de España, dos ejemplos paradigmáticos que enfrentan “the nation-state par excelente”1 contra un país que sigue cuestionando hoy la normalidad de su proceso nacional. Y, sin embargo, la realidad global los ha llevado a ambos a enfrentarse a unos retos comunes que ponen en jaque la idea de Estado y de Nación de cara al futuro. | Translation - English
For the last two centuries, the idea of border has been equated to the concept of spacial limits of a Nation-State. Until very recently historians promoted this concept as a maxim and a principle measure for everything. Not surprisingly, for a long time the profession they exercised was one of the main agents in the construction of national identities. Nevertheless, in recent years, a new scholarly literature appears that speaks of transnational, regional, local histories or even global ones in opposition to the old-fashioned way of doing history. Nowadays, "national history" seems a breeze from the past.
To demonstrate the key factors that call into question the very idea of Nation-State, we amplify this concept of a border in order to make visible the historiographical problems that working with this idea in its narrow meaning as "a territorial divide" seem to nvoke. We address the cases of France and Spain, two paradigmatic examples, and juxtapose them as "the nation-state par excellence" (France) and a country that continues to question today the normality of its national process (Spain). And, nevertheless, the reality at large forces these two countries to face common challenges that destabilise the ideas of State and of Nation with a view towards the future. |
