All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

Orice călătorie a devenit un simplu vehicul în care aparatul foto e plimbat de colo colo, iar toţi călătorii sunt sclavi în imperiul obiectivului atoatevăzător. Turiştilor de modă veche, adică celor ce-şi folosesc atavicele rămăşiţe oculare, le este luată faţa de fotografi, ce se aşteaptă ca nimic să nu se clintească din câmpul vizual în timpul ritualicei focalizări. Ciudaţii omuleţi lipsiţi de aparat fac loc celor dotaţi cum trebuie, aşteaptă încheierea ritualului şi asistă la năvălirea din autobuze a hoardelor lui Zeu-Clişeu. Locuitorii unor ţări întregi sunt hăpăiţi, înghiţiţi şi absorbiţi de ochiul cu orbita neagră. Nu reuşesc decât să smulgă şi ei ce pot de la căpcăunii fotofili. „Vrei poza la casa mea, la camila mea? Dai ban.”
Poate că asta nu ar fi o problemă dacă s-ar şi realiza ceva. Dacă toată vânzoleala asta şi toată nebunia de clicuri ar cristaliza în final ineditul estetic sau adevărul esenţelor. Din păcate, esenţele se refuză aparatului foto, ce reţine doar o formă de graffiti supraevaluat la bursa trivializării.
Prin matriţa obiectivului, ne imprimăm pe lumea înconjurătoare, sub pretextul că surprindem Minunile Lumii, deja fotografiate de profesionişti şi vândute la fiecare librărie şi chioşc de ziare. Dar, odată întorşi din călătorie, ce rost are să-i arătăm tuşei Maricica vederi cu peisajul toscan, dacă nu facem dovada prezenţei noastre în el?
Niciun lanţ de stânci nu e autentic fără să-i fiu în preajmă. Niciun monument nu există decât cu soţia mea, rezemată de el. Niciun templu nu interesează fără completarea rânjetului meu superior. Cu aparatul meu, acaparez frumosul, mi-l însuşesc, îl comprim, îl îmblânzesc şi îl reproduc pe peretele golaş al sufrageriei mele, pentru a demonstra unor prieteni şi rude alese pe sprânceană adevărul esenţial despre aceste frumuseţi: le-am văzut, am fost acolo, le-am fotografiat, deci există.

Pe vremuri (hei, hei, nu chiar pe când cu descălecarea lui Mihai la Alba-Iulia!), exista în Cluj o stradă numită Amurg (notaţi: nu „Amurgului”, Amurg). Întotdeauna mi-a plăcut acest nume de stradă; mi se părea ciudat, aparte, straniu, poetic, „punător pe gânduri”. Numele îmi plăcea, strada nu. Nici nu prea avea ce să-ţi placă. O stradă plină de absenţe. Copleşită de absenţe. Adică, de ajungeai pe-acolo, puteai fi sigur că nu vei întâlni pe nimeni (poate câte o gospodină în capot, care trecea alături, la altă gospodină îmbrăcată în capotul ei, sau, potrivit anotimpului, în combinezon; cam atât). De prin curţi te mai lătra câte un câine care ţinea să se afle în treabă. Culmea (fireşte, depinde din ce sens o luai) strada ducea înspre... amurg. Nici după ce am aflat că pe această stradă a locuit (în gazdă) nevastă-mea, pe când nu era (nevastă-mea), dar era studentă.
Ce, naiba, puteai căuta pe strada asta!?! Ni-mic. Nimic. Nu tu prăvălii, nu tu o crâşmă, cât despre firme, pe-atunci, nici vorbă. („Pe-atunci” = în urmă cu vreo, pardon, 30-40 de ani, adică acum cam 1500 de zile; vă daţi seama? 36.000 de ore! Minute? O mulţime.) Aşadar: ce puteai căuta pe strada asta? Neamuri (nu era cazul meu), gagici (n-am văzut), frumuseţi arhitectonice (nici vorbă), umbra copacilor de pe trotuar (nu erau, nici trotuar nu prea era)... atunci, ce? Ori, în mod obligatoriu (de pildă dacă erai poştaş, miliţian sau executor judecătoresc – iarăşi nu era cazul meu), ori de-a nebun (era cazul meu). Adică, încerc să explic:
Atât de altcumva era strada asta încât de multe ori, de multe ori, m-am dus pe-acolo (şi, zău, aveam cam 1/3 din anii mei de astăzi) doar ca să păşesc dinspre levant spre amurg, sau dinspre amurg spre răsărit. Nu avea nici o importanţă.

Ages ago (not when Michael the Brave entered Alba-Iulia, not that long ago!), there was a street in Cluj called Sunset Street (note: not Sunset Boulevard, Sunset Street). I have always been fond of its name, since it had a strange, poetic, out-of-the-way ring to it. It invited reflection. I liked the name, but not the street. There wasn’t much to like, either. A street beset by absences. Overrun by absences. If you ever wandered about, you were sure to cross nobody (maybe some housewife in her dressing gown, dropping by another housewife in her dressing gown or her union suit, according to seasonal dictates; that was pretty much it). Some yard dog would bark at you, feigning dedication to canine purpose. Oddly enough (depending on the direction you were headed, of course), the street lead towards… sunset. No, not even after learning that this was the street where there lived (as a tenant) my wife, before being (my wife), in her undergraduate years.
What could have possessed you to roam this street!?! Nothing. Not a thing. No stores in sight, no watering holes to be found, and private enterprise was inconceivable back then (“Back then,” that’s, well, 30 or 40 years ago, close to 1.500 days ago; can you imagine that? 36.000 hours! Minutes? A clockful of them.) Again: what drove you to come on this street? Relatives (not in my case), dames (never saw any), wonders of human architecture (not a chance!), the shade of trees extending over the sidewalk (there weren’t any trees, and not much of a sidewalk, for that matter)… What, then? Well, a duty call (for instance, if you were a mailman, policeman or bailiff – again, not my case) or wanderlust (my case). Let me explain:
This street was so much a-part from others, that I have often, often visited it (and, to be sure, I had only 1/3 of my age today), only to walk from Orient to sunset, or from sunset to sunrise. It mattered little.

When my wife told me she was pregnant, I got that stomach-churning sensation that hits you on a plunging roller coaster. I was excited, yes, but... oh my God. Parenting was for, well, parents.
So here I stand, bug-eyed and sweating buckets like some poorly-drawn cartoon character, the question marks floating in the air around my head while I try to prepare myself for the complete care and responsibility of another living being besides my cat. I'm responsible for making sure this little human doesn't grow up and turn into a complete monster. If the child turns out a social moron-- my fault. If the babe can't find Luxembourg on the map, blame me for not providing a better education. They'll need therapy, and of course that will be on my head too. So many opportunities for wrong turns!
I remember the day my father sat me down and awkwardly told me about the birds and the bees; it was perhaps the most excruciating and embarrassing half hour of both our lives. I can't do that to another human being.
Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. I can do this, I say; I'll be a great father. My child will be reared a well-rounded, educated, upstanding citizen of the world, and he or she won't hate me.

Când nevastă-mea m-a anunţat că e însărcinată, am simţit un gol în stomac, ca atunci când eşti pe un montagne russe şi te avânţi în gol. Vestea mă bucura, cum să nu, dar… vai de capul meu. Vocaţia părintească era pentru părinţi, ce mai.

Poate mă grăbesc cu pronosticurile. Doar sunt în stare să-l cresc. Voi fi un tată de milioane. Copilul meu va fi un cetăţean al lumii exemplar, educat şi plurivalent. N-are de ce să mă urască.
Şi apoi îmi apare copilul în minte. În gluga sa placentară, o întrebare îl face să caşte un ochi speriat: „Şi dacă taică-meu o dă în bară?”

Alte două caracteristici ale oraşelor din Moldova şi Wallachia trebuie precizate pentru a înţelege mai bine dispunerea căilor de comunicaţie: lipsa zidurilor înconjurătoare şi distribuirea aparent haotică a clădirilor şi terenurilor din spaţiul intravilan. Comunităţile orăşeneşti nu au avut nici puterea economică sau politică, nici coeziunea necesară, pentru a se implica în ridicarea unor fortificaţii care să le protejeze. La această situaţie a contribuit şi politica de centralizare a principilor, atitudinea faţă de economie a acestora, dar şi configuraţia demografică şi socială eterogenă a ţărilor. De asemenea, atacurile oştilor străine sau a celor conduse de numeroşii pretendenţi la tron, de care principatele nu au dus lipsă, au afectat deseori centrele orăşeneşti. În Wallachia, în preajma oraşelor nu întâlnim nici măcar cetăţi, în care orăşenii să găsească adăpost la nevoie, situaţia fiind puţin diferită în Moldova, unde sunt prezente câteva cetăţi, funcţionale până în sec. XVII (Suceava, Hotin , Soroca, Neamţ). Two other features of Moldovian and Wallachian towns will further our insight into the outline of roads: the absence of defensive walls and the apparently unplanned distribution of buildings and terrain in the built-up areas. The local communities lacked the economic and the political potential, as well as the required consistency to undertake the construction of defensive structures. This situation was also enhanced by the centralization policy led by princes, their attitude towards economy, and by the heterogeneous demographic and social make-up. The forays of foreign armies or of those commanded by numerous contenders for the throne, who were never in short supply, often took their toll on urban centers. Not even strongholds were erected near Wallachian towns, strongholds where townspeople could seek refuge in times of need. The situation was slightly different in Moldova, where several strongholds served their purpose up to the 17th century (Suceava, Hotin , Soroca, Neamţ). Majoritatea istoricilor care s-au aplecat spre cercetarea evoluţiei oraşului din perioada medievală s-au confruntat cu câteva dileme. Prima este cea a continuităţii ora¬şului medieval, dacă acesta a reprezentat sau nu o dezvoltare din oraşul antic. Răspunsul dat la această întrebare naşte altele: cum definim oraşul medieval, ce a determinat extraordinara mişcare de urbanizare din Europa apuseană şi centrală din secolele X-XIII şi care a fost forţa socială care a promovat ridicarea urbană? O altă importantă dilemă este dată de modul în care a funcţionat oraşul în lumea dominată de raporturile vasalice şi senio¬riale, cum a răspuns la impactul cu acestea. A reprezentat oraşul un „element de viaţă socială nou, profund străin spiritului căruia îi este permis să i se spună feudal” (Marc Bloch)? Istoricii din ţările spaţiului est-european trebuie să răspundă şi altor dileme: care este originea şi cât de strânse au fost legăturile dintre centrele urbane din acest spaţiu si oraşele din Europa apuseană şi centrală, dar şi din arealul bizantin. Ever since the 10th-11th centuries, the town has stood out from the medieval tableau as a singular element, an institution that blended into a world governed by personalized social relationships. In a time when the authority of lords gained ascendancy as a new “type of non-state power,” as Dominique Barthélemy would indicate, the town forges its place, and gradually dictates a new perspective, by bringing back into focus after a so-called “dark” age the trade, the currency, labor and time. Most historians directing their research efforts towards the evolution of the town in the Middle Ages were faced with several dilemmas. The first concerns the continuity of the medieval town, and whether it was a descendant of the town in Antiquity or not. An answer to this question breeds other quandaries: how do we define the medieval town, what has triggered the extraordinary current of urbanization in Western and Central Europe in the 10th-11th centuries, and what was the social drive that generated this urban upheaval? Another significant dilemma is created by the role played by the town in the dynamics of a world organized across vassal - lord relationships, and its response to their action. Was the town “a new body in social life, essentially foreign to the spirit one is allowed to call feudal” (Marc Bloch)? Historians in Eastern Europe must also account for other dilemmas: what is the origin and how closely related were urban centers in this area (as well as those in the Byzantine area) to towns in Western and Central Europe? Is this an original urban phenomenon, or were there models for it, appropriated and adapted? Expert opinion remains divided, since we are dealing with urban developments specific to each region. This is why answers to these questions display great variety and complexity, and have to be documented. |
