Play4Africa Improves Lives Through Sport
In the run-up to the Football World Cup finals in South Africa 2010, the Spanish-based initiative, Play4Africa, has embarked on a long road trip to raise awareness about some of the key problems faced by millions of young Africans - including poverty, infant mortality, lack of sports opportunities, diseases, especially HIV and AIDS, malaria and water-borne diseases - and to reinforce their "right to play".
The Play4Africa convoy, which has left Almeria in Southern Spain on the 7th of March 2010, is scheduled to reach Cape Town - South Africa on the 11th of June, the opening day of the World Cup. On its route South, the convoy will go across 14 African countries in a period of 4 months, delivering humanitarian and educational material for the prevention of AIDS, malaria and water-related diseases; reinforcing and supporting children’s “right to play” by donating footballs and football shoes along the way.
The convoy will also provide sports equipments such as footballs, boots and humanitarian aid to help tackle malaria, Aids and water-related diseases for impoverished people in 14 African countries, namely Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique and South Africa.
The objective of the campaign is to raise awareness about AIDS, malaria and water-related diseases, help save lives trough prevention and focus on the three deadliest diseases in Africa (AIDS, malaria and diarrhea). In addition to reinforcing children’s “right to play” and promote football as a vehicle for achieving personal development and self-esteem. It also aims at inviting the general public to contribute, in a tangible manner, to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

It is worth mentioning that the campaign hopes to receive 10,000 footballs and 30,000 sets of football equipment from top clubs, companies and individual donors. These will be distributed en route, along with thousands of disease prevention kits containing malaria nets (11,000), water purifiers (1500) and educational material on how to prevent diseases. It also aims to support local authorities, institutions and NGO’s in the prevention and control of such diseases.
In cooperation with Plan Egypt, the convoy will distribute footballs and boots to three programs in different areas; Child Media in Abu Mossalam (Giza), Street Chidlren and Child Labour in Cairo South.
It is worth mentioning that Plan-Egypt has been working for a long time to promote children’s rights to end child poverty.

However, millions of children and teenagers never get to enjoy this important aspect of their development due to war, sickness and poverty. في الحقيقة إن ما يميز مهاتير محمد انه رجل أفعال ناجحة وليس مجرد تنظيرات فكرية، لذا فإن أفكاره ربما أكثر أهمية وواقعية للدول التي تسعى للنهوض من التحليلات الثقافية والسياسية التي يعلنها الصحافيون والكتاب البعيدون عن الواقع .
الأمر المثير للاهتمام أن مهاتير صاحب الثقافة العالية يدرك بشكل عميق التعقيدات الثقافية والعرقية والسياسية التي يمكن أن تواجه البلدان النامية ويستطيع أن يشرح بنجاح هذا التعقيد وكيفية تجاوزه. وسبق وتطرق مهاتير في مقالاته إلى مسألة مهمة وباتت تشغل العالم، وهي لماذا الدول الإسلامية باتت عالقة في التخلف .
والسؤال الذي بات مطروحا هو: هل تعارض قيم الدين الإسلامي التحديث والتطور؟. يجيب مهاتير على الفور بـ "لا" كبيرة، ولأكثر من نموذج مثل ماليزيا تكشف غلط مثل هذا الرؤية.

ويؤكد على الأهمية القصوى للمعرفة والعلم في هذا العصر: "لطالما اعتقدت أن المعرفة تحدد مستوى الحضارة الذي يصل إليه أي مجتمع إنساني. واليوم أصبحت المعرفة أكثر أهمية من أي وقت مضى". ولكن بمجرد أن تم التخلي عن هذا العنصر ضمرت الحضارة الإسلامية وتهاوت في النهاية".
يقول مهاتير: إن المعرفة لا تتعارض مع الدين الإسلامي، بل على العكس يدعو إليها، ويشرح موقفه من التصادم المزعوم بين الدين والعلم حيث يقول: "دراستي للدين والعلم أقنعتني بأن الاثنين متوافقان، وأن العلم هو في حقيقة الأمر يشمل ويقوي الإيمان، لأنه يظهر أن قدرة الله هي أكثر مما نقاد لنعتقد فيه. لا يمكن للعلم أن يحتل مقعد الإيمان، لأن إنجاز العلم محدود بإرادة الله. ولا يمكن للعلم أن يجيب عن التساؤل. لماذا؟!".
واستنادا الى مهاتير فإن مثل هذه الرؤية التي لا ترى تعارضاً بين العلم والدين هي التي سادت في ماليزيا، حيث بات الدين محفزا على العلم وليس العكس.
ويشن مهاتير هجوما عنيفا على العديد من الدول الإسلامية التي انشغلت في الصراع الطائفي الداخلي على التكاتف، والدخول في السباق الحضاري المحتدم.
ويقول: "إننا كثيراً ما نقول إن الإسلام يعلمنا أننا معشر المسلمين أخوة، فإننا لا نظهر أخوتنا لتدل على إيماننا. إننا كثيراً ما نتجاهله تماما. بدلا من الأخوة، فإننا مستعدون لقتل بعضنا البعض".
ويشرح كيف تحلى الماليزيون المؤلَّفون من الملايو المسلمين والصينيين البوذيين والهنود الهندوس بالحكمة وبدلا من أن يتم فرض عرق وثقافة واحدة اتفقوا على العيش بجو من التسامح والتعايش، فقررت الغالبية المسلمة التي كانت تعيش في الريف مشاركة الصينيين والهنود في البلاد، الأمر الذي انعكس سريعاً على نموها الاقتصادي.
هي مقاربات ماليزيا كانت على الدوام غير تقليدية، على المستوى الديني والعرقي والثقافي، وقد أثبتت نجاحها الباهر.

Actually, what really distinguishes Mahathir Mohamed is being a man of successful actions and not only intellectual theorizations, that is why his ideas are far more important and realistic for countries seeking to rise above the cultural and political analysis proclaimed by journalists and writers who are far off from reality.
It is interesting that Mahathir, a highly intellectual person realizes profoundly the cultural, ethnic, and political complexities that might face the developing countries and can explain successfully such complexity and how to overcome it. He previously mentioned an extremely important issue in his articles which has since occupied the world’s attention: Why are Islamic countries stuck in underdevelopment?
Now the question is: Do Islamic values oppose modernization and development? Mahathir immediately answers “no” with confidence, and more examples like Malaysia prove this vision to be totally wrong.
Mahathir excels in a historical description of how Muslims were brilliant in the Islamic civilization and Al-Andalus by creating cultural models that impressed the world, and this depended mainly upon the openness in science and knowledge, which only flourished "because of seeking knowledge and acquiring all its kinds, whether the Islamic branches of knowledge or any other branches”.
He stresses the ultimate importance of knowledge and science in our era:" I have always thought that knowledge determines the level of civilization that any human society might reach. Today knowledge has become far more important than ever”. But as soon as this element has been abandoned the Islamic civilization atrophied, and collapsed at the end".
Mahathir says: "knowledge does not contradict with the Islamic religion; on the contrary it calls for such knowledge and explains his opinion regarding the alleged conflict between religion and science, where he says:" My studies in science and religion convinced me that both are in harmony, and that science actually includes and strengthens faith since it proves that God's power is more than we are led to believe. Science cannot replace faith, because science achievements are limited to God’s will and science cannot answer the question, why?!"
According to Mahathir, such vision that sees no contradiction between science and religion is that which prevailed in Malaysia, where religion has become an incentive for pursuing science and not the contrary.
Mahathir launches a vicious attack on several Islamic countries that have been busy in inter-communal strife, instead of joining hands and engaging in the ardent civilization race.
He says:"We often say that Islam teaches us Muslims to be brothers and sisters, but we do not show our brotherhood to convey our faith". We often ignore it completely, Instead of brotherhood; we are ready to kill each other".
He explains how the Malaysian people; Muslim Malay, Buddhist Chinese, and Hindu Indians have been prudent enough, and instead of imposing one race or culture, they agreed upon living in an atmosphere of tolerance and coexistence. The Muslim majority living in the countryside decided to share their country with the Chinese and Indians, the thing which reflected rapidly on its economic growth.
These are some approaches, Malaysia has always been unconventional, on the level of religion, race, culture, and has proved smashing success.

Looking Back, Looking Forward: Hospitality and Tourism Industry in Malaysia
Asia is a major potential for development for the tourism industry. The rapid growth in the tourism and hospitality industry resulted in the increasing demand for competent staff be it at the professional or managerial position which possess the criteria such as the sound exposure to modern business and management practices in the tourism and hospitality industry. Currently the tourism and hospitality industry is the world’s largest single revenue earners, employing an estimated 10% of the total worldwide labour force.
There are three types of competencies in the tourism industry, that is: the Core; Generic; and Functional. The Core competency relates to primary divisions of labour. It relates to knowledge in the aspects of hospitality business, the importance of teamwork, and the health and safety issues. Generic competency is a value-added skill such as languages, entrepreneurship and any other competencies which are beyond academic content. Functional Competency relates to specific task performance for example accommodation services, receiving and processing reservations and preparing roster duty for staff.
This paper touches on the Generic competency requirement, specifically the important role of the English language in promoting the growth and sustainability of the tourism and hospitality industry for the following reasons:
The tourism and hospitality industry is a labour-intensive service industry and thus is heavily reliant on the availability of a skilled worker to deliver, operate and manage the tourism product; hence the interaction between the tourist and tourism industry personnel is an integral part of the total tourist experience ;
The tourism and hospitality education has evolved in a heterogeneous and ad hoc manner with limited linkages to the real or perceived needs of the tourism industry.
Tourism and hospitality is an emerging subject and although fragmented, the tourism and hospitality education has grown significantly during the last 50 years . There were three ways by which the tourism education has evolved as an academic subject. Firstly, through specific training related to the travel sector, subsequently courses in the business area, and consequently through a multidisciplinary study whereby the subject of tourism is coupled with a traditional subjects for example Sociology and Linguistics.
Students are inclined to study the Tourism and Hospitality Management course due to the industrial benefits that it provides particularly cultural enrichment and economic growth . Although the industry people regard the physical contexts of hotels, restaurants, airports and transportation facilities as that having attained international standards, the soft skill contexts in terms of employees' service attitude, skill levels and language ability still fall short of those expected by foreign tourists.

تعتبر آسيا من الإمكانات الكبرى لتطوير صناعة السياحة. ولقد أدى النمو السريع في صناعة السياحة والضيافة إلى الطلب المتزايد على موظفين أكفاء سواءً على مستوى الوظائف المهنية أو الإدارية ممن لديهم خبرة في هذا المجال، مثل التعرض السليم للممارسات الإدارية والتجارية الحديثة في صناعة السياحة والضيافة. وحالياً، تعد صناعة السياحة والضيافة من أكبر مصادر الدخل الفردية في العالم، التي تساعد على توظيف ما يقرب من 10% من إجمالي القوى العاملة في أنحاء العالم.
