Lors d’un grand show à Los Angeles, mardi 12 octobre, Bill Gates a présenté la stratégie de Microsoft dans les « médias numériques ». Le numéro un mondial des logiciels vise l’énorme marché créé par les achats et échanges en ligne de musique, photos, vidéos, programmes télé et films.
Premier axe de cette stratégie, le lancement d’une offre de musique payante. M. Gates a ainsi annoncé le démarrage, aux Etats-Unis, du site de téléchargement de chansons MSN Music. Moyennant 0,99 dollar (0,80 euro) par morceau, les internautes auront accès à un catalogue de 1 million de titres. Grâce à un partenariat avec le grossiste Loudeye-OD2, cette boutique en ligne est également disponible en Australie et dans neuf pays européens.
Microsoft arrive en retardataire sur ce marché mais y fait figure d’épouvantail, du fait de sa force de frappe financière (60 milliards de dollars de trésorerie) et de sa position dominante dans le monde de l’informatique et de l’Internet. Ainsi, le site musical de Microsoft sera non seulement accessible à partir du site MSN, premier portail mondial attirant 350 millions de visiteurs par mois, mais aussi inclus dans le logiciel Windows Media Player, lui-même partie intégrante du système d’exploitation Windows sur lequel tournent 95% des ordinateurs de la planète.

Microsoft challenge Apple and Sony in the online music market.
During the digital entertainment exposition in Los Angeles, on Tuesday 12th October, Bill Gates unveiled his new digital media strategy. Microsoft, the world’s largest software producer aims to grab a share of the enormous market created by the online purchase and sharing of music, photos, videos, TV programmes and films.
At the heart of this strategy is the bid to offer music sales. As such, Mr Gates has announced the US launch of the music download site MSN Music. Averaging $0.99 (£0.79) per track, Internet users will have access to a catalogue of over 1 million titles. Thanks to a partnership with the wholesaler Loudeye-OD2, this online store is available in Australia as well as in nine European nations.
Although a late arrival to the market, Microsoft has developed a formidable presence, due to its financial clout (it has $60 billion in funds) and its dominant position as regards Information Technology and the Internet. As such the MSN Music service will be accessible not just from msn.com, the first worldwide internet portal to attract more than 350 million visitors a month, but it will be included with the Windows Media Player software, an integral part of the Windows operating system, which runs 95% of the computers on the planet.
It is enough to cause worry for Apple, the leading worldwide retailer of online music.

Le rêve d’une cité internationale dans l’espace risque fort de se fissurer. Un rapport américain montre en effet que le projet sera beaucoup plus onéreux que prévu alors même que la finalité scientifique de la station n’est pas évidente.
Rien ne va plus pout la Station spatiale internationale. De dépassement de délai en dérapage budgétaire, elle connaît de graves ennuis. A tel point que la Nasa a commandé un rapport pout s’y retrouver. Rendu public à la fin du mois d’avril, il dénonce des dépassements budgétaires faramineux. L’enveloppe devrait atteindre 150 milliards de francs contre 100 milliards prévus (après avoir déjà ajouté de sérieux dérapages).
Certes, le rapport dirigé par Jay Chabrow ne se prononce pas sur l’opportunité de poursuivre ou d’interrompre le programme. Mais il pointe d’inquiétantes dérives : l’assemblage devait être terminé en 2003, il ne le sera pas avant 2006, ce qui, bien sur, en aggrave encore le coût. Tous les participants (Etats-Unis, Russie, Canada, Japon et Europe) sont responsables de ces débordements au prorata de leurs engagements.
Sans surprise on trouve donc surtout les Américains, suivis des Russes qui avaient la charge de lancer le premier module en juin 1998 et qui ne pourront pas le faire avant la fin de l’année, au mieux. En outre, indique le rapport, le budget et le niveau des réserves son inadéquats pour un programme de cette ampleur. De fait, il s’agit d’envoyer 460 tonnes dans l’espace, ce qui nécessitera 93 tirs de fusées et de navettes.

Development of International Space Station exceeding deadlines and overrunning budgets
Dreams of an international space city are in danger of being broken. An American report shows in effect that the project will be a lot more costly than previously expected even though the scientific aim of the station isn’t clear.
All bets are off for the international space station. From delays to budgeting mistakes, the project has experienced serious problems. Even reaching the point where Nasa commissioned a report to make sense of things. Publicised at the end of April, it exposed colossal budget overruns. The budget will hit 150 billion francs as opposed to the much lower 100 billion francs previously indicated.
Of course, the report put together by Jay Chabrow doesn’t give an opinion as to whether the project should be carried through to completion or terminated. But it indicates some worrying drifts: the assembly should have been finished in 2003; it won’t be finished until at least 2006, which will, in all likelihood, increase the cost yet again. All the participating countries (The U.S, Russia, Canada, Japan and the Europe nations) are responsible for paying these overruns in their commitments pro rata.
It comes as no surprise then that we find that the Americans, followed by the Russians who were in charge of launching the first module in June 1998 and who won’t be able to do it before the end of the year, at best. On the other hand, according to the report, the budget and the amount of contingency funds are inadequate for a programme of this magnitude. Effectively, it involves sending 460 tonnes into space, which requires 93 rockets and space shuttle launches.

I am a part-time freelance translator specialising in technical engineering translations, specifically in the fields of Energy and Power Generation. I am currently employed as a Sales Executive for a well known diesel generator manufacturer and have, over the past two years, gained much experience working with customers and clients both in Latin America and within Europe.
