In einem Krankenhaus der nordafghanischen Kleinstadt Imam Sahib wollte ein alter Mann, dass ich ihn fotogra¬fiere. Er öffnete seinen weiten Mantel. Auf seinem linken Arm lag ein winziges Neugeborenes. Dann winkte er eine in eine Burka gehüllte Frau heran, die ihm ein zweites Baby brachte. Zwillinge, der Alte war erkennbar stolz. 64 Jahre sei er alt, erzählte er mir. Die blaue Burka hüllte die Frau restlos ein und verbarg auch ihr Gesicht und die Augen, die ich hinter dem dichten Netz der Sehschlitze nicht erkennen konnte. Doch ihre Jugendlichkeit war unverkennbar. Mehr weiß ich nicht über sie, mehr erfuhr ich nicht. In den meisten Fällen ist es für einen fremden Mann, gar ei-nen Ausländer, unmöglich afghanische Frauen anzuspre¬chen. Aber ich kenne die Situation, in der viele von ihnen leben und sterben: junge Mädchen, Kinder, die zur Ehe mit alten Männern gezwungen werden, die grauenhafte und weit verbreitete häusliche Gewalt, Schläge und Verstüm-melungen mit heißem Wasser und Öl für kleine Missge¬schicke, Morde und kollektive Vergewaltigungen wegen der angeblichen Ehre ihrer Familie oder Stammes, die täg¬lichen Selbstmorde verzweifelter Frauen. Die achtzehnjähri¬ge Samija erhängte sich mit einem Strick, weil sie an einen sechzig Jahre alten Mann verkauft werden sollte. Bibi Gul schloss sich in einen Stall ein und verbrannte sich selbst. Täglich werden solche Fälle gemeldet, täglich bleiben die meisten von ihnen unbekannt. Es gibt anderes im heutigen Afghanistan. Hunderttau¬sende Mädchen, die die Schule besuchen, streitbare Frau¬en im Parlament, deren mutigste, Malalai Joya, allerdings von der Männermehrheit am 21. Mai 2007 verfassungswid¬rig ausgeschlossen wurde, und es gibt, wir sehen es in die¬sem Katalog, afghanische Malerinnen mit Bildern, die von mehr als Unterdrückung und Leiden erzählen, von Zuver¬sicht, Wärme, menschlicher Möglichkeit. Das ist dreifach bedenkenswert. Ich kann es nur sensationell nennen, ob¬wohl und gerade weil dieses Wort ansonsten zur Beschrei¬bung von Banalitäten verkommen ist. Unter den Taliban, und nicht nur unter ihnen, galt figürliche Kunst als blas¬phemisch, und wer sie schuf, musste mit demTod rechnen. Dass Frauen solche Kunst lernen und ausüben konnten, war undenkbar. Und: Woher nehmen sie ihre Lebensfreu-de, ihren offensichtlichen Optimismus, ihre Wärme? Sie wissen sehr genau, wie es so vielen Mädchen und Frauen in ihrem Land ergeht. Doch sie finden sich nicht damit ab. Sie sind überzeugt, dass es anders werden muss und an¬ders werden kann. Sie haben ihre Sprache dafür gefunden, die Sprache der bildenden Kunst -für sich, für die Frauen Afghanistans, für ein Land mit uralten, reichen Kulturen, das versucht, sich wieder und in eine hoffentlich bessere Zukunft zu finden. | Translation - Italian
Ero in un ospedale a Imam Sahib, cittadina nel nord dell’Afghanistan. Un vecchio signore dall’ampio mantello volle che gli facessi una foto. Aprì il mantello e vidi che teneva, col braccio sinistro, un neonato. L’uomo fece cenno ad una donna di avvicinarsi. La donna, avvolta in un burka, gli portò un altro neonato. Erano gemelli, ed il vecchio ne era visibilmente orgoglioso. Mi raccontò che aveva 64 anni. Il burka, di colore blu, avvolgeva completamente la donna, nascondendole pure il volto e gli occhi, che non seppi distinguere dietro la fitta rete che le permetteva di vedere. Una cosa, però, era inconfondibile: la sua giovane età. Di lei non so nient’altro, di lei non seppi nient’altro. Nella maggior parte dei casi, infatti, è impossibile per uno sconosciuto – tantomeno se straniero – rivolgere la parola ad una donna. Conosco però la condizione in cui molte di loro vivono e muoiono: giovani ragazze, bambine, costrette a sposarsi con uomini anziani e vittime di una violenza domestica spaventosa quanto diffusa, fatta di percosse e mutilazioni con acqua od olio bollente per futili motivi; donne vittime di omicidi e stupri di massa, giustificati con quello che chiamano l’onore della famiglia o della tribù; donne disperate che ogni giorno arrivano a suicidarsi. Samija, diciotto anni, si è impiccata con una fune perché volevano venderla ad un uomo di sessant’anni. Bibi Gul si è rinchiusa in una stalla e si è data fuoco. Casi del genere vengono resi noti ogni giorno e ogni giorno casi del genere rimangono nell’ombra. L’Afghanistan di oggi, però, non è solo questo. Ci sono centinaia di migliaia di ragazze che vanno a scuola, ci sono donne agguerrite in Parlamento (la più coraggiosa delle quali, Malalai Joya, ne è stata però esclusa in maniera anticostituzionale dalla maggioranza maschile il 21 maggio 2007) e ci sono, come si può vedere in questo catalogo, pittrici afgane di quadri che vanno oltre l’oppressione e il dolore e che raccontano storie di ottimismo, di calore, di possibilità umana. Questo merita una grande attenzione. È qualcosa che posso solo definire sensazionale, nonostante il fatto – o proprio per il fatto – che questa parola venga ormai usata per descrivere la quotidianità. Sotto i talebani, e non solo sotto di loro, l’arte figurativa era considerata blasfema, e chiunque la praticasse doveva fare i conti con la morte. Il fatto poi che le donne potessero imparare ed esercitare tale arte, era proprio impensabile. E poi: da dove prendono quella gioia di vivere, quell’evidente ottimismo, quel calore? Sono donne che conoscono benissimo la situazione di molte loro connazionali, ma non si rassegnano. Sono convinte che la situazione debba e possa cambiare, ed hanno trovato una lingua tutta loro – quella dell’arte figurativa – per esprimerlo. The mission of Splendor of Florence is to inspire people by focusing on the importance of continuity and tradition in the art and culture of the past as we move toward the future. While the main activity of Splendor of Florence is in the form of cultural festivals and educational exchanges, world events have turned our attention to the many artists whose voices cannot be heard and whose artwork cannot be experienced. It is for this reason that we decided to collaborate with the Centre for Contemporary Arts of Afghanistan (CCAA) and Patchworld Verlag in exposing the exhibit MAKE ART NOT WAR to as many people as possible around the world.
Like all people of Afghanistan, the talented artists who contributed to this very moving exhibit have experienced the horrors of war and oppression, but because they are women, they have also had to endure the deprivation of their artistic expression. Thanks to the establishment of the CCAA in Kabul, these women have found the freedom to express themselves creatively in a collection of paintings which illustrates not only the suffering they have had to endure but also the purity of spirit they have somehow been able to maintain.
We are honoured that the Accademia delle Belle Arti – the oldest and most prestigious cultural institution dedicated to art and young artists – has agreed to curate and present MAKE ART NOT WAR in Florence. We are also very fortunate to have Lynn Wiechmann, Co-President of the Tuscan American Association and co-ordinator of special events for Splendor of Florence, as liaison between Patchworld Verlag and the Accademia and director of promotional activities surrounding the exhibit in Florence.
Afghanistan was the cultural capital of the Islamic world during the same period that Florence was experiencing the Renaissance, and therefore we feel that it is historically relevant that the exhibit MAKE ART NOT WAR opens in Florence as its first stop on what we are sure will be a very successful world tour.

Splendor of Florence ha come obiettivo principale quello di sensibilizzare la popolazione concentrandosi sull’importanza della continuità e della tradizione artistico-culturale del passato, per il nostro presente ed il nostro futuro. Splendor of Florence si dedica prevalentemente all’organizzazione di festival culturali e di scambi educativi; la storia recente, però, ha spostato la nostra attenzione verso quel gran numero di artisti di cui non possiamo conoscere la voce e le opere. È per questo che abbiamo deciso di collaborare con il Centre of Contemporary Arts Afghanistan (CCAA) e con la casa editrice tedesca Patchworld affinché la mostra “Make Art Not War” possa fare il giro del mondo.
Come tutta la popolazione afgana, le artiste di talento che hanno contribuito a questa toccante esposizione hanno vissuto sulla propria pelle l’atrocità della guerra e dell’oppressione, ed essendo donne, sanno anche cosa vuol dire non potersi esprimere liberamente a livello artistico. Grazie alla fondazione del CCAA a Kabul, queste donne hanno trovato la libertà di esprimersi artisticamente ed hanno realizzato una collezione di dipinti che illustrano non solo la sofferenza di una vita, ma anche la purezza di spirito che, in qualche modo, sono state in grado di mantenere.
Siamo onorati del fatto che l’Accademia delle Belle Arti (la più antica e prestigiosa istituzione culturale dedicata all’arte e ai giovani artisti) abbia voluto curare e presentare “Make Art Not War” a Firenze. Abbiamo, inoltre, la grande fortuna di avere Lynn Wiechmann (co-presidente dell’Associazione Toscana-Usa e coordinatrice degli eventi speciali di Splendor of Florence) come tramite tra la casa editrice Patchworld e l’Accademia, nonché come direttrice delle attività promozionali relative alla tappa fiorentina dell’esposizione.
L’Afghanistan era il centro culturale del mondo islamico proprio nel periodo del Rinascimento a Firenze. Per questo riteniamo estremamente importante a livello storico che l’esposizione “Make Art Not War” faccia tappa nella città toscana, come buon auspicio per quello che, ne siamo sicuri, sarà un giro del mondo di grande successo. |
