HOW TO SPOT A RECESSION?
Look for signs of economic strain: tightening labor markets, peaking capacity, rising interest rates.
Watch out for shocks that can topple an expansion. And don’t expect to be sure about the next slump until it’s already started.
Recall the famous caution that the shock market has correctly predicted five out of the last nine recessions? Not only have stock prices been rising lately, but the S&P index, which fell by 28% last October, is still higher than at the end of 1986.
The yield curve arrays yields to maturity on debt securities – from long to short. The curve looks healthy now: it slopes gently upward. When it flattens or slopes downwards, watch out. That’s a sign that the Fed is slamming in the brakes.

First Quarter 2010 Highlights
The O. division delivered solid sales growth versus the same period last year, despite a weak cough/cold season this year.
North America, Europe, LATAMEA, and RIC all posted sales increases for the quarter, which offset lower sales in Asia-Pacific.
The O. division’s operating income for the first quarter was down compared to first quarter 2009 as expected.
This was mainly due to additional investment this year in marketing and sales for two of our key brands, V® in Germany and P® in the US, as well as increased investment in R&D.
V®, a key element of O.’s long-term growth strategy, continued its strong performance in the quarter as the top driver of global sales.
P® showed increases in both sales and market share indicating that the additional investment in advertising and promotion is working.
P® is one of the big bets for the O. division’s future and will remain a top-priority for T.H. and the Global Leadership Team.
In Europe, orders for P® – a proton pump inhibitor similar to P® – began shipping in March to the UK for the first product launch which took place on April 12.
I hope you’ll join me in congratulating B.H., Head of Europe, and the P® team on the first of their planned series of launches in Europe.
P® is a major addition to our global GI category and the team has worked very hard since the license and supply agreement was completed in November of last year.

V®, l’un des éléments clés de la stratégie de développement à long terme d’O. et le principal moteur des ventes mondiales, a poursuivi sa forte performance au cours du trimestre.
P® a affiché une hausse à la fois de ses ventes et de sa part de marché, signe de l’efficacité des investissements accrus dans la publicité et la promotion.
P® constitue l’un des principaux paris sur l’avenir d’O. et restera au cœur des priorités de T.H. et de l’équipe de direction internationale.
En Europe, les premières commandes de P® – un inhibiteur de la pompe à protons analogue à P® – ont été envoyées à destination du Royaume-Uni au mois de mars, en vue du lancement du produit qui a eu lieu le 12 avril.
