In its simplest definition a drilling rig is a machine that drills holes in the ground. It operates in a similar way to the household electric drill; requiring a cutting edge, rotation, weight – or force – acting on the cutter, and a method to clean the debris away.
Topics
1. Drilling Basics
2. Cutting Rocks With a Bit
3. Applying Weight and Rotation
4. Cleaning Material (Cuttings) From the Hole
5. Generating and Distributing Power

Drilling Basics
Drilling Basics
Drilling contractors have one basic job – drill holes in the ground. The objective of drilling holes is to find oil and/or gas; these are called hydrocarbons. The goal is to find oil and gas in large enough quantities to make the extraction economical.
The term “economic” is important. If 100 wells must be drilled before finding a good one, costs will be much higher than a 10 to 1 ratio. The solution is to drill where there is a chance or possibility of hydrocarbons being present in the rocks. This raises the question, “How do we know where there is a chance of finding hydrocarbons?”
Oil companies employ specialists to carry out surveys of the rock structure beneath the ground. A typical example is the “seismic” survey. Results are interpreted by specialists who pick out the most likely rock structures to contain hydrocarbons. Basically, they are looking for rock structures that could “trap” oil or gas, or both, in economic quantities.
Seismic Survey
The well is drilled using principles that are very similar to making a hole with an electric drill. Electric drills:
o Have a cutting tool (drill bit)
o Can apply rotation (RPM)
o Can have weight applied (weight on bit – WOB)
o Has spiral grooves that can clean cut material away from the bit
Electric Drill
Using this principle, a drilling rig can cut deep holes, shallow holes, vertical holes, and deviated holes. In fact, the rig can cut almost any shape or size hole. The limiting factor is the type of rig and the environment that will be drilled.
Rig type is a critical element. Drilling deep wells requires a rig with a great deal of power, bits that can cut very hard rocks, and a whole range of equipment that can operate under high pressures and temperatures found deep in the earth ( 3 miles or 5 kilometres). Hydrocarbons are found beneath the ground in many parts of the world; from the hottest deserts to the coldest polar ice cap. They may be found on land, below swamps and shallow or deep seas. This requires a wide variety of rig types.
Review:
o Drill to find hydrocarbons
o Drill in “potential” hydrocarbon bearing rock
o Seismic surveys help find potential economic quantities of oil and/or gas
o Oil companies hire drilling contractors to drill
o Wide variety of rig types required to operate in different environments

My background:
I am a French engineer graduated in Industrial System Management in France in 2001.
I have started my career as a translator supported by a strong working experience in Engineering and Business fields, acquired when I was managing international projects in Paris for over 3 years, and then in London for over 4 years. In parallel, I have been travelling extensively these recent years, which is also why Travel & Tourism is also one of my favourite working fields in translation.
I have relocated to Taiwan in 2009 and I now daily live in 3 different languages, English, French and Chinese. I believe that both my international experiences and way of life have been an excellent foundation to working as a professional translator, which made me discovered that I really like working with languages (currently only English and French, but I hope I will include soon Chinese!).
