If you have mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis and are at least 18 years old, you may be eligible for this investigational study.
What is Ulcerative Colitis?
Ulcerative Colitis is a disease that causes inflammation and sores, called ulcers, in the lining of the large intestine. Ulcerative colitis can occur at any age, but most often starts between the ages of 15 and 30. The most common symptoms of this disease are abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea, and might include:
· fatigue
· weight loss
· loss of appetite
· rectal bleeding
Ulcerative colitis is diagnosed through a series of tests and comprehensive physical exams. If you think that you may be experiencing symptoms of ulcerative colitis, contact (______________) for more information.
What is Being Studied?
The goal of this research study is to see if an investigational medication (XXXXX) is safe and effective for the treatment of ulcerative colitis. This investigational treatment is a different form of a 5-ASA medication. 5-ASA medications have been prescribed for this disease for more than 50 years and have been shown to be helpful in the treatment of ulcerative colitis. This investigational medication differs from other forms of 5-ASAs because it gradually releases the active ingredient throughout the colon, which may potentially relieve the symptoms (diarrhea and rectal bleeding) of ulcerative colitis. Also, there is more medication per tablet in this investigational treatment, which reduces the number of tablets that you will need to take.
What Will be Required of Me?
If you qualify for this study, participation will last 8 weeks. During this 8 week period, you will have 5 separate visits to your study physician. During some of this time, laboratory tests and 2 sigmoidoscopies will also be performed at different intervals.
Who Is Eligible for the Study?
This study is seeking patients with mild to moderate forms of ulcerative colitis. Patients can be either male or female and must be at least 18 years of age.
Can I Get Additional Treatment?
Yes, patients will have the possibility of receiving the active investigational treatment medication for an additional 12 months.
