Drinking Like a Camel Camels can lose up to 25% of their body water and still perform, but human performance start sto deteriorate when even a small amount is lost. “With a loss of just 5% of body fluid, perceptible symptoms appear: headache, fatigue, confusion or forgetfulness, and an elevated heart rate,” say Frances Sizer and Eleanor Whitney in Nutrition. Source text - English Fifty years earlier E. T. A. Hoffmann, the author and music critic, had used the same word, "sublime," to convey similar sentiments. Beethoven, Hoffmann wrote, is the "sublimest" of composers: his music "induces terror, fright, horror and pain." It "awakens that endless longing which is the essence of romanticism," "opens the realm of the colossal and immeasurable," and "leads the listener away into the wonderful spiritual realm of the infinite." It is still possible to understand what Hoffmann and Wagner were talking about. Beethoven’s music is remarkable: in its extreme length, insistent dissonances, and willfully angular juxtapositions; with its obsessive repetitions and overwhelming fortissimos, the music moves us in ways that the more genteel music of Mozart and Haydn does not. And though we have, to some extent, become accustomed to many features of Beethoven’s style, the music can still make us catch our breath. Beethoven is to Haydn as the roller coaster is to the Ferris wheel: his music shocks as well as pleases, and pleases, in part, because it shocks. We need a name for this special quality, and could do worse than to adopt the term "sublimity," already old by Hoffmann’s time, for that purpose. ---------------------------------- One might say that Beethoven’s musical "idea"–that is, the thematic material, as originally presented in the Sonata’s exposition–is in conflict with the limitations of his instrument, as represented by the high D in the soprano voice. The music "wants" to reach a high B-flat, but it gets "stuck" on the lower note. Such conflicts between musical "ideas" and the exigencies of actual performance are typical of Beethoven’s music. Especially in his late pieces, Beethoven frequently wrote music that was difficult, if not impossible, to play: for example, the very high vocal passages in the Missa Solemnis and Ninth Symphony, or certain near-impossible leaps in the Hammerklavier Sonata, op. 106. In these passages, the musical score seems to be in conflict with the human beings who are trying to perform it. What is unusual, even unique, about the Tempest is the way the music seems to portray its own limitations. Instead of a conflict between the music and its performers, or between the desire of the composer and the abilities of the players, the Tempest is a piece of music that is in conflict with itself. While we can at least imagine a flawless performance of the Ninth Symphony or the Hammerklavier, the Tempest intrinsically contains a symbol of its own unrealized goals. Soprattutto nelle ultime opere Beethoven spesso scrisse musica difficile se non impossibile da suonare: ad esempio gli altissimi passaggi vocali nella Messa Solenne e nella Nona Sinfonia o certi salti ai limiti dell’impossibile nella Sonata Hammerklavier, op. 106. In questi passaggi il brano sullo spartito sembra essere in conflitto con l’essere umano che tenta di eseguirlo. Quel che è insolito, se non unico, nella Tempesta è il modo in cui la musica sembra descrivere i propri limiti. Anziché esprimere un conflitto tra la musica e i suoi esecutori, o tra il desiderio del compositore e l’abilità dei suonatori, la Tempesta è un brano in conflitto con se stesso. Mentre possiamo perlomeno immaginare un’esecuzione impeccabile della Nona Sinfonia o dell’Hammerklavier, la Tempesta contiene in sé il simbolo dei propri obiettivi non realizzati.

Sicuramente un po’ più lontano, percorrendo tortuosamente il sentiero delle scogliere, si apriva da ambo le parti una veduta grandiosa sulle isolette rocciose di Kynance Cove e Mullion Cove, con Mounts Bay, Penzance e Land’s End in lontananza. Era un posto magnifico, se solo i suoi antenati avessero avuto il buon senso di accorgersene. Ma Penmorgan House, come la maggior parte delle altre case di proprietari terrieri cornici, era stata accuratamente posizionata – per motivi di riparo indubbiamente – in una depressione rivolta verso il mare dove la visuale era molto ridotta; e il panorama che offriva, sulla nera brughiera e le rocce più nere, di sicuro non trasmetteva allegria in alcun modo. Source text - English Clinical study The clinical part of the study included several parameters that assess overall physical fitness. Thirty-five (17 female, 18 male) patients with epilepsy and 36 (15 female, 21 male) normal controls with a mean age of 35.7 years (range, 18-61 years) and 33.4 years (range, 24-55 years), respectively, were investigated. Among the patients with epilepsy, 30 patients had localization-related epilepsies, three had idiopathic generalized epilepsies, and two patients had a localization-related or generalized epileptic syndrome (undetermined). All patients were receiving long-term antiepilectic drug (AED) treatment. In 21 of them, seizures were well controlled (i.e., they had been seizure free for > 1 year or had not more than one seizure per year). The controls consisted of medical students and members of our department. Written informed consent was obtained from all participating subjects. The study was approved by the local ethics committee of the University of Göttingen. Aerobic endurance was investigated by means of the 2-km walking test (6,7), which was validated in normal controls and healthy overweight subjects and successfully applied to assess cardiorespiratory fitness (7). A walking distance of 2 km should be completed within a maximum time of 20 min and with a minimum average heart rate of 116 beats/min. The interpretation of the test result was based on a regression model considering heart rate, walking time, body mass index (BMI) or body weight, age, height, and gender as explanatory variables and correlated closely with the maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) (6,7), which shows a valid correlation with cardiorespiratory fitness (7). In principle, a shorter walking time and a lower heart rate lead to a better test result and are indicative of better physical fitness. The walking test and all other exercises reported in this study were performed during the summer of 1994 at the University stadium of Göttingen. The participants were asked to walk fast over a distance of 2 km (five stadium laps, tartan track). The heart rate was continuously recorded by a portable telemetric cardiometer (Polar Sports Tester; POLAR ELECTRO OY, Tampere, Finland). Walking time, mean heart rate at the end of each lap, body weight and height, age, and gender were documented and allowed a classification of the results with a standardized nomogram (8) with the scores 1 (very good), 2 (good), 3 (sufficient), 4 (poor), and 5 (very poor). A score of 6 meant that a test participant needed a walking time of >20 min or did not reach a mean heart rate of 116 beats/min, and a score of 7, that the whole distance could not be completed because of physical exhaustion. For statistical analysis of the data, we compared categories 1 to 3 (good to sufficient results) with categories 4 to 7 (poor results and worse). Source text - French Les infections respiratoires C’est graduellement que les effets du tabagisme sur l’appareil respiratoire se manifestent. Cela commence par un toussotement quelconque, qui devient de plus en plus gênant, puis le fumeur se met à cracher, principalement en hiver. La toux irritante que cause souvent le tabagisme correspond à un état inflammatoire des bronches qui, s’il perdure, abime la muqueuse, provoque un gêne respiratoire (essoufflement au moindre effort) et entraine une bronchite chronique. Selon le Pr Dautzenberg, 2,5 millions de Français en sont atteints à des degrés différents. Lorsque le poumon n’est plus apte à se débarrasser de l’infection, ce sont les petites bronches qui commencent à souffrir (emphysème) ; l’étape suivante est l’insuffisance respiratoire grave qui peut conduire au cancer du poumon (le tabac est responsable à 95 % des cancers du poumon). Au stade du simple toussotement, arrêter de fumer permet aux fonctions respiratoires de se rétablir de façon spectaculaire. Après 2 ans d’arrêt, le risque de cancer se trouve diminué de moitié. My passion for languages was born during my time at secondary school and when, as a child, listening with admiration to the translation of a simultaneous interpreter on television.
