Due to their minute size, cells can only be viewed with the assistance of a microscope. The microscope was invented between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century, jump-starting exploration into a tiny new world. In 1665, the English scientist R. Hooke (1635-1703) used a microscope, built by himself, to examine a thin slice of cork. He discovered that the cork was packed full of minuscule compartments, giving it a beehive-like appearance. Hooke named these compartments "cells". A. von Leeuwen Hoek was the first to discover bacteria and other microscopic animals living in samples of sewer water.
