Trotz der weit reichenden technischen Möglichkeiten der genetischen Diagnostik befindet sich die öffentliche Auseinandersetzung um ihre möglichen sozialen Folgen und ethischen Implikationen noch am Anfang. Im Mittelpunkt dieser Debatte steht die Angst vor einer Neuauflage oder einer Rückkehr eugenischer Praktiken. In der Regel wird dabei das gesellschaftspolitische Potenzial der genetischen Diagnostik im Wiederaufleben eines genetischen Determinismus bzw. in einer "Genetifizierung" der Gesellschaft gesehen.
Demgegenüber geht dieses Forschungsprojekt von der These aus, dass die möglichen diskriminierenden bzw. selegierenden Effekte gendiagnostischer Verfahren sich weniger in Begriffen eines genetischen Determinismus beschreiben lassen; vielmehr besteht ihre soziale Bedeutung vor allem in der Eröffnung von Interventionsräumen und der Entwicklung von Strategien zur Vermeidung oder Minimierung von Risiken.

An ultimate goal of genetic research is to understand the connection between genotype and phenotype in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The quantitative genetics field has developed a suite of statistical methods to associate genetic loci with diseases and phenotypes, including quantitative trait loci (QTL) linkage mapping and genome-wide association studies (GWAS). However, each of these approaches have technical and biological shortcomings. For example, the amount of heritable variation explained by GWAS is often surprisingly small and the resolution of many QTL linkage mapping studies is poor. The predictive power and interpretation of QTL and GWAS results are consequently limited. In this study, we propose a complementary approach to quantitative genetics by interrogating the vast amount of high-throughput genomic data in model organisms to functionally associate genes with phenotypes and diseases. | Translation - French
L’un des buts ultimes de la recherche génétique est de comprendre la relation entre le génotype et le phénotype, de manière à améliorer le diagnostic et le traitement des maladies. Les chercheurs en génétique quantitative ont mis en place une série de méthodes statistiques pour relier les locus génétiques à des maladies et des phénotypes, dont la cartographie de liaison des locus de caractères quantitatifs (QTL pour quantitative trait loci en anglais) et les études d’association pangénomique (GWAS pour genome-wide association study en anglais). Cependant, chacune de ces approches présente des limites sur les plans technique et biologique. Par exemple, le nombre de différences héritables expliquées par les études d’association pangénomique est souvent étonnement faible, de même que peu d’études de cartographie de QTL aboutissent. Par conséquent, le pouvoir prédictif et interprétatif des résultats des QTL et des GWAS reste limité. Als verursachend sind bisher genetisch bedingte Veränderungen von verschiedensten Komponenten der terminalen Differenzierung, z. B. von Strukturproteinen des Zytoskeletts (Keratine), von Zelladhäsionsproteinen, von Transmembranproteinen (Connexine) und des cornified cell envelope (Loricrin) bzw. von Enzymen zu dessen Aufbau (Transglutaminase 1) und des Lipidstoffwechsels der Haut (Transporter in Keratinosomen, Hepoxilin-Stoffwechsel) bekannt. Der Pathomechanismus für viele Entitäten ist zum aktuellen Zeitpunkt noch unbekannt. Unklar ist auch wie Gene mit völlig anderen Funktionen, z. B. DNA-Reparaturgene, auf die terminale epidermale Differenzierung einwirken und so zu Ichthyosen (z. B. Trichothiodystrophie) führen können. | Translation - French

I'm Cindy, I was born in Paris and as far as I remember, I have always been interested in foreign languages, as well as in other ways to communicate like music.

Translating is a fascinating way to discover history and other cultures by handling the text, playing with the words, trying to explore the hidden meaning of popular sentences or specifically chosen expressions according to the context.
Moreover, it allows me the deepen my knowledge of society, sciences and technologies, as one of the best methods to correctly translate a document in a technical subject is to keep up to date and be informed of the latest discoveries in this subject.
