I have a Master's degree cum laude and a PhD degree in economics from Lomonosov Moscow State University (one of the oldest Russian higher education establishments) as well as experience of work in the field as a college lecturer, head of a unit of a research institute, and head of the reporting department of a bank. I also worked as an in-house translator and editor for several newspapers and magazines (including "Economics and Life" and "Business-Week-Russia"). Currently I am a full-time freelance translator and editor specializing in law and finance.
My best result in Kudoz achieved when I was playing this game on a regular basis :)) was the "title" of the all-time leader in Law (Contracts), Finance (General), Business/Commerce, Economics, Investment/Securities and Real Estate.

Currently I mostly translate and edit contracts, financial statements, UN publications and brochures of investment funds and Forex brokers but I began my career as a freelance translator from translating books for 5 Moscow leading publishing houses. I have translated about 30 books mostly on economics, but also on human resources, law and psychology. I am happy to have been able to translate into Russian several famous financial textbooks, including:
Atrill, Peter & McLaney, Eddie, "Accounting and Finance for Non-Specialists",
DePamphilis, Donald, "Mergers, Acquisitions, and Other Restructuring Activities",
Natenberg, Sheldon, "Options Volatility and Pricing",
Hayre, Lakhbir (editor), "Salomon Smith Barney Guide to Mortgage-Backed and Asset-backed Securities",
Van der Wielen, Lex and others, "International Cash Management" and
Fraser-Sampson, Guy, "Private Equity as an Asset Class".

Are you looking for a translator? Quite a lot of people offer translation services, nevertheless a good translator is a rare bird. That’s why I will take the liberty of offering a few words of advice which, hopefully, will make your search easier. First and foremost, your translator must be experienced. A diploma from a foreign language training institution alone—even a diploma with honors—is no guarantee of a deep understanding of language, language constructions or terminological nuances or, for that matter, of the skills and devices of written translation. And it doesn’t guarantee the extensive vocabulary—whether of the foreign language or of Russian—which is so essential to the translator, not to mention breadth of knowledge, erudition and much more. This is why a primary focus on experience—practical and successful experience—in our not-so-simple industry makes sense as you search for a translator.
What else must your translator be? Educated within his/her area of specialization. Every successful translator specializes in one industry or another because nobody can be expert at everything. Many, for example, specialize in finance and law, but not everyone realizes that these fields, like any other, have their own terminology and concepts, and leave no room for the amateur. If a translator fails to distinguish profit from profitability, cost from value, or current assets from fixed assets etc, and he doesn’t know what a balance sheet or cash flow statement looks like, it is unlikely that he will be able to handle financial translation.
And one more item of importance. Your translator must not only be capable of, but love to work with text. After all, our product is text, and if a client trips on every word or has to plough through a pile of words, this can only mean one of two things: either we have done a poor job or we have left our job unfinished. This would seem obvious enough, but the translator who edits his text multiple times (and this is the only way to produce the right turn of phrase) is hard to come by. Some simply can’t write (after all, this isn’t taught anywhere) or don’t possess editing skills, while others consciously leave this painstaking job to the editor. The result? Everything—or maybe not everything—has been translated, but readability is sorely lacking. That in a nutshell is why finding a good translator is no easy task. I hope, however, that my input will help you make the right choice!
