GRAMMYs Best New Artist: Ariel Rechtshaid on HAIM

In our GRAMMYs As Told To series, Radio.com chatted with an artist about one of the Best New Artist nominees at the 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards. Here, we feature HAIM as seen through the eyes of producer Ariel Rechtshaid, who helped craft the band’s debut album, Days Are Gone.

A lot of people that I’m drawn to work with personally, which is not a lot of people, are people who really inspire me in a musical sense, in a way that could be easily forgotten in the world of hype. There are so many factors surrounding the popularity of an artist these days, which are all good and all important and I don’t mean to take away from that, but the one thing that HAIM has that not everyone has—and in fact very few people have—is that they’re a real band.
The first time I saw them play, when they asked me what I thought, I think I said something along the lines of it being ‘intense.’ They weren’t sure what I meant by that, like does that mean ‘weird’? What does that even mean?
I meant it quite literally. Seeing three sisters onstage locking in together in such a way…it’s rare enough to see real musicians anyway, and then they’re even a step beyond most bands, because they’re not just up there jamming in any stylized way. It really felt like it was coming from the core. You could almost see these bolts of lightning attaching them together through their eyes. It was one singular, cohesive, three-headed single unit.
Beyond being sisters who play together, they’re just so skilled. That’s not something that everybody even necessarily picks up on other than on a subconscious level. They’ve been playing for so long. Their dad is a drummer, and it all comes from a very rhythmic place. I think they all started out on drums, so even Este’s bass playing is so rhythmic and so funky and so rare. Danielle’s vocals are rhythmic as well. They create this sound that doesn’t actually sound like Michael Jackson or Chaka Khan, but it has the same spirit. It’s just so…big.
You see the kind of people who are inspired by HAIM and are into the band, like Fleetwood Mac, which is such a great honor from one of the best bands of all time, really, to another. I’ve seen Jackson Browne come up to them at a restaurant and compliment them, I’ve seen Justin Timberlake come up to them and compliment them and invite us all to his show. These are huge honors. I’ve worked with Usher, and I played him their stuff and he was blown away.
There’s pop celebrity presence, and then there’s the thing that musicians can articulate but I think everyone feels. HAIM has both, really. When I saw them play, I pretty much dropped everything I was doing and dedicated essentially a year to helping them find their voice on record. From my perspective, they’re definitely the best new artist.

Muitas das pessoas com quem tenho vontade de trabalhar, e não são muitas, são pessoas que realmente me inspiram no sentido musical, de um jeito que poderia ser facilmente esquecido no mundo do hype. Hoje há tantos fatores acerca da popularidade de um artista, sem querer desmerecê-los, todos eles são bons e importantes, mas uma coisa que a HAIM tem que nem todo mundo tem — e, na verdade, pouquíssimas pessoas têm — é que elas são uma banda de verdade.
A primeira vez que as vi tocando, quando perguntaram a minha opinião, acho que disse que era “intenso”, ou algo assim. Elas não entenderam muito bem, tipo, era “estranho”? O que significava aquilo?
Eu estava sendo bem literal. Ver três irmãs juntas sobre o palco, comprometidas de um jeito... Enfim, já é bem raro ver músicos de verdade, e mesmo assim elas estão um passo à frente da maioria das bandas, porque não estão simplesmente ali em cima, tocando de forma estilizada. Parecia mesmo vir de dentro. Quase dava para ver aqueles raios de luz conectando todas elas, através dos olhos. Era uma unidade de três partes, singular e coesa.
Além de serem irmãs tocando juntas, são tão habilidosas. Isso não é algo que qualquer pessoa necessariamente adquira de outra, a não ser em um nível subconsciente. Elas tocam há tanto tempo. O pai delas é baterista, tudo tem uma origem muito rítmica. Acho que todas começaram na bateria, então até o jeito de tocar baixo da Este é tão rítmico, tão funky e tão raro. Os vocais da Danielle também são rítmicos. Elas criam um som que não soa exatamente como Michael Jackson ou Chaka Khan, mas tem o mesmo espírito. É tão... grandioso.
Você percebe pelas pessoas inspiradas pela HAIM, que curtem a banda, tipo Fleetwood Mac, o que na verdade é uma grande honra de uma das melhores bandas de todos os tempos para outra. Já vi Jackson Browne abordá-las em um restaurante para tecer elogios, já vi Justin Timberlake se aproximar para elogiá-las e nos convidar para o seu show. É uma honra enorme. Quando trabalhei com Usher, mostrei o som delas e ele ficou impressionado.
Existe a presença pop da celebridade, e existe algo que os músicos conseguem articular, mas que acho que todo mundo sente. A HAIM tem as duas coisas. Quando as ouvi tocando, praticamente larguei tudo o que estava fazendo e me dediquei durante um ano para ajudá-las a encontrar sua própria voz no estúdio. Na minha opinião, elas definitivamente são o artista revelação.

und mich zusammengebracht hat. Im ersten Augenblick war
ich über unsere Begegnung allerdings nicht wirklich dankbar,
im Gegenteil, es hätte nicht viel gefehlt und meine ersten
Worte wären »Blöde Kuh!« gewesen. Anstatt rückwärts
aus der Parklücke zu rollen, war ihr Auto vorwärtsgeschossen
und hatte mein heiß geliebtes Rennrad an den Fahrradständer
gequetscht. Mein Bein hatte ich gerade noch wegziehen
können.
Aber ein zerknirschter Blick aus ihren schiefergrauen Augen
genügte, um mich das Fahrrad vollkommen vergessen zu
lassen. Sie übergoss mich mit einem wirren Wortschwall, wobei
sie ihre Nase krauszog und völlig vergaß, Luft zu holen. Das
macht sie heute auch noch so: Wenn sie aufgeregt ist, redet sie
ohne Punkt und Komma, so lange, bis sie beinahe blau anläuft.
»Es tut mir so leid, ich dachte, ich hätte den Rückwärtsgang
eingelegt, ach du Scheiße, war das mal ein Fahrrad, ich

Entretanto, de início não me senti muito grato por ter encontrado
Kati. Ao contrário, por pouco minhas primeiras palavras dirigidas
a ela não foram “sua imbecil”. Em vez de sair de marcha a ré
da vaga do estacionamento, o carro dela avançou e esmagou minha amada bicicleta de corrida contra um poste. Por sorte consegui tirar a minha perna da rota de colisão no último momento.
Mas a expressão de arrependimento daqueles olhos acinzentados
foi o suficiente para me fazer esquecer completamente
da bicicleta. Ela me arrebatou com um confuso turbilhão de palavras, enquanto seu nariz se franzia, esquecendo-se de respirar. Até hoje ela faz isto: quando está nervosa, fala sem parar até ficar roxa.
— Sinto muito mesmo, pensei que tinha engatado a marcha a
ré, ai que droga, era uma bicicleta cara, não se preocupe, vou comprar uma nova, tenho seguro contra isso, acabei de ser operada, sabe, bem, na quinta-feira, mas não foi no cérebro como você deve estar imaginando, foi o apêndice, talvez eu não devesse estar dirigindo, mas afinal de contas eu vim de carro, isso só aconteceu porque eu me dei alta antes da hora, é que a comida era tão horrível, quero dizer, eles disseram queerapeixemastinhagostodeisopor...
Agonizante, ela lutou para recuperar o fôlego.
Acho que já estava desesperadamente apaixonado por ela
nesse momento.
