| Translation - English Since foreign exchange market is for exchange of currency, it is tremendously large market where not only individual investors but also financial institutions, corporations and institutional investors participate. We often hear on the news on TV, "Japanese Yen exchange rate at today's Tokyo Foreign Exchange Market is... ." What kind of market exactly is it?
Is it located in the center of Japan's financial district, Kabuto-cho? Or is it administered by Japanese government?
The truth is that Tokyo Foreign Exchange Market is not physically located at any particular place. It is a conceptual market, and a network that connects bank to bank. This network where banks cross trade is called "Inter-bank market," which is the foreign exchange market in the narrow sense. On the other hand, individual investors, corporations, and institutional investors send buy or sell orders to banks and foreign exchange (FX) firms, who in turn buy or sell foreign currency at the aforementioned Inter-bank market. This market is sometimes called "Customer market." Therefore, Inter-bank market and Customers market serve just like a wholesaler and a retailer. Outside of Japan, the FX transactions where individual investors participate can also be called as “Retail FX.”
