The Grand Cherokee:
Perfection, Power, Performance
Sneakers or dancing shoes, safari on
the road or roaring around off-road –
the Grand Cherokee has combined
cool luxury with a high adventure factor
since 1992. In late 1987, Chrysler
had taken over the Jeep brand and
halted the production of the luxurious
Grand Wagoneer in 1991. For 1992,
Chrysler presented the Grand Cherokee
as its successor and as the new
flagship of the Jeep fleet. Lavishly
equipped, with an interior comparable to that
of a comfortable passenger car, it was evidence
on wheels that a four-wheel drive vehicle can
provide an ambience rich in style. Even though
the Grand Cherokee was clearly smaller than its
predecessor on the outside, its interior was
similarly sized.
In its segment for sport utility vehicles, the new
Grand Cherokee quickly took over the class lead.
It not only surprised with its low-slung, familysuited
interior that also served many transport
purposes, but scored highly in terms of handling.
Despite its two rigid axles, it offered much
better road handling and consumed significantly
less fuel than its predecessor.
Buyers of a Grand Cherokee could choose between
a four-liter, six-cylinder in-line engine
(which powered the luxurious SUV adequately
with its 184 hp), and a 5.2-liter V8 engine from
Chrysler, which delivered 215 hp. For the sixcylinder,
a five-speed manual and a four-speed
automatic transmission were available, the latter
being installed as standard in the eight-cylinder
model.
In 1998 Chrysler merged with Daimler-Benz to
become DaimlerChrysler. In the same year the
company introduced the new ‘WJ’ Grand Cherokee.
Its grille looked more aggressive with seven
wide slots, the body was wedge-shaped, rounder
and had molded sides to emphasize the
character of the vehicle. The wheelbase remained
the same, while the exterior length grew
by a few inches. Powertrains on offer were a
4.7-liter V8 with 238 hp and a 3.1-liter diesel,
which produced 140 hp from its five cylinders.

Altı silindirli, beş vitesli manüel ve dört vitesli otomatik şanzıman seçeneklerinden otomatik şanzıman, sekiz silindirli modelde standart olarak sunulmuştur.
