'n Rekenaar is enige toestel wat gebruik word om inligting te verwerk volgens 'n goed gedefinieerde prosedure. Die woord word huidiglik algemeen gebruik om te verwys na digitale rekenaars.
Die woord het vroeër verwys na iemand wat somme maak, met of sonder meganiese hulpmiddels, maar die woord is oorgedra na die hulpmiddels. Aanvanklik was die inligtingverwerking amper uitsluitlik vir wiskundige probleme, maar hedendaagse rekenaars word vir verskeie ander take gebruik.

A computer is any device used for processing information according to a properly defined procedure. Currently, the word is generally used for referring to digital computers.
Although the word was previously used for a person doing sums, with or without mechanical aids, the word is currently used for the aids themselves. Initially, almost all processing of information was done for mathematical problems, but modern computers can be used for a variety of other purposes.
The wide definition includes things like the slide rule, various mechanical computers starting from the abacus and further, as well as all modern electronic computers.
History
The history of the computer begins with the history of calculation. From time immemorial humans had wanted to use aids for making bigger and more complex calculations. Aids like tally sticks and rope counters have exited for many years. The abacus has been used for centuries as an accounting aid. More recent aids include help tables and slide rules.
The Second World War supplied motivation for much research in computer technology, especially for the application of cryptography. Some of the first computers were indeed used during the war to crack secret codes. After the war, computers were increasingly used for governmental and commercial information processing.
Initially, computers were cumbersome owing to the use of punch cards and unreliable vacuum tubes. Technological breakthroughs which alleviated these problems, include magnetic storage and transistors. Further advances were made possible by the use of integrated circuits.
The end of the 20th century was marked by progress in network technology and the extent to which it (and especially the Internet) became a common thing.

Creation of the Internet

The USSR's launch of Sputnik spurred the U.S. to create the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in February 1958 to regain a technological lead. DARPA created the Information Processing Technology Office to further the research of the Semi Automatic Ground Environment program, which had networked country-wide radar systems together for the first time.
J. C. R. Licklider was selected to head the IPTO, and saw universal networking as a potential unifying human revolution. Licklider recruited Lawrence Roberts to head a project to implement a network, and Roberts based the technology on the work of Paul Baran who had written an exhaustive study for the U.S. Air Force that recommended packet switching to make a network highly robust and survivable.
After much work, the first node went live at UCLA on October 29, 1969 on what would be called the ARPANET, the "eve" network of today's Internet. In December of 1970, Charles A. Petrik contacted the U.S. Navy and suggested that a special communications network, that the Department of Defense had built for use in the possiblitity of a nuclear attack, could also be used during peace time. Petrik convinced the military to connect the computers of the U.S. National Laboratories for scientific research purposes, and to allow these labs to get data to other labs faster, and safer.
The vast majority of today's Internet uses version four of the IP protocol (i.e. IPv4), and although IPv6 is standardised, it exists only as "islands" of connectivity, and there are many ISPs who don't have any IPv6 connectivity at all.

My name is Samuel Murray, and I am a qualified full-time professional translator in English and Afrikaans. I am about 40 years old. I was born and raised in South Africa, but I currently live in the Netherlands, with my wife and two children.

Document translation
I am a general translator with experience in a wide variety of texts and fields. I translate mostly from English into Afrikaans, but I am fully bilingual and can also translate from Afrikaans into English.
Software and web site translation
I have a lot of experience in translating for small and large localisation projects (often abbreviated as l10n), including professional jobs and volunteer translations. I can translate a variety of source file formats generally found in software and web sites being localised, and I'm a quick learner when it comes to new formats.
Editing, proofreading, etc.
Although my main service is translation, I can work on projects where I'm expected to do editing, reviewing and/or proofreading. I also do back-translation (a literal translation back into the source language for the purpose of checking accuracy). Afrikaans is my native language, and I have lived in South Africa for 39 years. I'm skilled in writing or adjusting texts to the various tones and registers of the language.
Related experience
2000 - 2006 (full-time in-house translator)
From May 2000 to December 2006, I was a full-time in-house translator at the South African national daily newspaper, Beeld. I worked in the advertising department, where I had translated a very wide variety of text types and fields.
Every week this daily newspaper had special sections for which I had to translate targeted advertisements and editorial copy. These included: motoring news (automobiles), auctions (including jewellery, antiques, heavy machinery, light machinery, catering equipment, and property), court ordered auctions, legal notices, classified advertisements (so-called smalls), holidays and tourism, sports, food, entertainment, once-off features on just about anything under the sun, and audited financial statements.
During those years I had also done part-time freelance translation work for a whole range of clients. These included: horticulture, pharmaceutical texts and medical texts (including translation, back translation and reviewing), software localisation, web sites, user manuals, school textbooks (mostly in the subjects history and tourism), magazine articles (into both English and Afrikaans), correspondence, religious materials, etc.
Since 2007 (full-time freelance translator)
After having gathered a number of regular clients, and winning a large contract for software localisation in December 2006, I decided to become a full-time freelance translator from January 2007. During the year 2008 I also worked for the company Translate.org.za as a part-time project manager for some of their paid and volunteer translation and language promotion projects.
In 2007, I did about 250 separate translation jobs. This included the translation of Windows Vista into Afrikaans, for which I was the chief translator. In 2008, I did about 400 translation jobs, in 2009, I did about 550 translation jobs, and in 2010 I did about 900 translation jobs. These included small jobs that take less than an hour to complete, but also large jobs that take several days to finish.
Language specific qualifications
National Diploma in Language Practice
From February 1993 to November 1995, I studied full-time for a diploma in translation. The course included a 3-month practical session in the second year, and most of my experience during that time was from freelance translation work. The classes were both practical and theoretical, and included subjects relating to language dynamics, translation itself, cultural understanding, computer usage, business skills, and foreign languages. I was the top student in my class, and the only one to obtain cum laude.

I am currently member of the South African Translators' Institute (SATI) (membership number 100252) and the American Translators' Association (ATA) (membership number 242835).
I actively take active part in language and translation discussions on-line. One of my interests is Afrikaans terminology, and I have been co-editor of several on-line terminology lists.
