Source text - English Both cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and drug treatments such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are commonly used to treat GAD. Meta-analyses suggest CBT is an effective treatment for GAD, reducing anxiety and worry in the short- and long-term. Sertraline, along with the SSRIs escitalopram and paroxetine, is seen as a first-line pharmacologic treatment for GAD. Randomised, placebo controlled trials have
found sertraline efficacious for GAD in adults, children and adolescents. The treatment period ranged from 9 to 12 weeks in these pharmacological trials. A review of antidepressant medication concluded sertraline (along with escitalopram) has the most favourable balance between efficacy, acceptability (side effects and treatment discontinuation) and acquisition cost. Considering these findings, sertraline is a standard choice for treating GAD in clinical settings. While both CBT and SSRIs are beneficial, some evidence suggests that the effects of CBT may be more long lasting.
Translation - Italian Generalmente, per il trattamento del disturbo d’ansia generalizzato (DAG) si ricorre a terapie cognitivo-comportamentali (TCC) e a trattamenti farmacologici come gli inibitori selettivi della ricaptazione della serotonina (SSRI). Secondo i risultati delle meta-analisi, le TCC sono un trattamento efficace per il DAG, in quanto favoriscono la riduzione dello stato d’ansia e della preoccupazione, a breve e a lungo termine. La sertralina, con gli SSRI escitalopram e paroxetina, è considerata uno dei trattamenti farmacologici di prima linea per il DAG. In sperimentazioni controllate e randomizzate con placebo, la sertralina è risultata efficace per il trattamento del DAG negli adulti, nei bambini e negli adolescenti; per queste sperimentazioni farmacologiche, il periodo di trattamento variava dalle 9 alle 12 settimane.
