When looking at Larraz's paintings from a technical point of view, several things come to mind. The first is that, like Monet, he began his career as a caricaturist. One still sees traces, and more than traces, of this in the paintings he makes today. A caricaturist has to have an acute perception of both facial expression and gesture. There are striking examples of this in the current show, especially, as it happens, in images of women. An example is Via dell' Abbondanza - a painting that has a haunting, elusive kinship to Aubrey Beardsley's famous drawing of Messalina, with a little of his The Fat Woman (a caricature of Whistler’s snobbish wife Trixie) thrown in.
In general, however, Larraz's actual brushwork is not like that of the mature Monet. It has a much closer resemblance to an artist whose surname differs by one letter - Edouard Manet. Manet's technique, in turn, was heavily influenced by that of the great Spanish masters of the Golden Age, particularly Velazquez. One of Manet's gifts, shared with Velazquez, was to make paintings that are convincingly realistic, but without stiffness. | Translation - French
Lorsque l’on étudie les tableaux de Larraz sous un angle technique, plusieurs remarques viennent à l’esprit. La première, c’est que, comme Monet, il a débuté sa carrière dans la caricature. On en voit toujours des traces, et même plus que des traces, dans les toiles qu’il peint aujourd’hui. Un caricaturiste a un sens aigu tant de l’expression que du geste. On en trouve des illustrations frappantes parmi les œuvres exposées, en particulier, fruit du hasard, celles dépeignant des femmes. Un exemple en est Via dell’Abbondanza, un tableau qui rappelle de manière obsédante, insaisissable, la célèbre Messalina croquée par Aubrey Beardsley, avec en plus un petit air de sa Fat Woman (caricature de Trixie, épouse mondaine de Whistler).
Dans l’ensemble, pourtant, le coup de pinceau de Larraz ne ressemble pas à celui d’un Monet confirmé.
