Any company that aspires to succeed in the tougher business environment of the 1990s must first resolve a basic dilemma: success in the market-place increasingly depends on learning, yet most people don't know how to learn. What's more, those members of the organization that many assume to be the best at learning are, in fact, not very good at it. I am talking about the well-educated, high-powered, high-commitment professionals who occupy key leadership positions in the modern corporation.
Most companies not only have tremendous difficulty addressing this learning dilemma; they aren't even aware that it exists. The reason: they misunderstand what learning is and how to bring it about.
As a result, they tend to make two mistakes in their efforts to become a learning organization.
First, most people define learning too narrowly as mere "problem solving," so they focus on identifying and correcting errors in the external environment.

Ogni società che aspira al successo in un ambiente aziendale competitivo negli anni '90 deve prima risolvere un dilemma di base: il successo in ambito lavorativo dipende sempre più dall'apprendimento, eppure la maggior parte delle persone non sa imparare. E ancora peggio, coloro che all'interno di un'azienda sono quelli che in teoria hanno le maggiori capacità di apprendimento, si rivelano, in pratica, non così bravi. Sto parlando di quei professionisti che hanno ricevuto un'alta istruzione, molto dotati, fortemente impegnati, che occupano le posizioni chiave di leadership nelle aziende moderne.
Molte società non solo hanno grandi difficoltà ad affrontare il dilemma dell'apprendimento; non ne sono neanche consapevoli. Il motivo: fraintendono cosa sia l'apprendimento e come portarlo avanti.
Di conseguenza, tendono a fare due errori nei loro sforzi per diventare un'azienda che impara.
Innanzitutto, molti definiscono l'apprendimento in maniera troppo restrittiva come una semplice "risoluzione dei problemi," concentrandosi sull'identificare e correggere errori nell'ambiente esterno.
