Beside us on the bleacher seat we occupied was a family of five, the father and three children equipped with ornate and expensive cameras. They were extremely impatient for the show to begin. All were guzzling Coke and timing the geyser, somewhat skeptically, on their wrist watches. Finally the great event came. The guide made one loud, urgent appeal for attention, the crowd stilled momentarily, and Old Faithful went off on schedule. For all the carnival atmosphere, it was an impressive phenomenon to witness. There was even a scattering of applause and cheers as the water gushed up in several ascending spurts.

But many of the spectators, like the father and three children beside me, were far too preoccupied to ogle the spectacle. For no sooner did the geyser begin to blow than their eyes vanished behind their cameras, as if for sure the best way to have this experience was through a lens and on film. The children, eager to catch Old Faithful at its very zenith, kept asking their father throughout the eruption, "Now, Dad? Now?" But the father, apparently expecting the geyser to split the heavens, restrained them. "No, not yet... wait till she really gets up there."

But Old Faithful only rises so high, and then the show is over. Before this family of photographers had snapped their pictures, the veritable marvel of nature had bubbled back beneath the earth. The father's face emerged from behind his camera, frowning with disbelief. "Is that all?" he asked, with the belligerent voice of a man who knows when he is not getting his money's worth. "I thought it was supposed to go higher," his wife said. The children were no less crushed with disappointment. As they got up to leave, one of the boys sourly remarked, "Disneyland is better." And the whole family agreed.

Sentados al lado de nosotros en las gradas de la tribuna que ocupábamos había una familia de cinco; el padre y tres hijos estaban equipados con cámaras caras y ostentosas. Estaban muy impacientes por ver el espectáculo. Bebían a grandes tragos Coca Cola y, con un poco de desconfianza, cronometraban el géiser con sus relojes de pulsera. El gran momento llegó por fin. El guía pidió con urgencia y en voz alta que prestáramos atención. La multitud se paralizó por un momento, y el Old Faithful brotó a la hora prevista. A pesar del entorno festivo, era un fenómeno digno de presenciar. Hubo hasta una seguidilla de aplausos y aclamaciones mientras el agua brotaba en varios chorros hacia arriba.

Sin embargo, muchos espectadores, al igual que el padre y sus tres hijos a mi lado, estaban demasiado preocupados como para observar con atención el espectáculo, porque en el momento en que el géiser entró en erupción, sus ojos desaparecieron detrás de las cámaras, como si creyeran que la mejor manera de vivir esta experiencia fuera a través de una lente y una película. Antes de que esta familia de fotógrafos hubiera tomado sus instantáneas, la verdadera maravilla de la naturaleza se había sumergido nuevamente, entre burbujas, en la tierra. La cara del padre apareció por detrás de su cámara, frunciendo el ceño con incredulidad. “¿Eso es todo?”, preguntó, con la voz agresiva de un hombre que sabe cuando ha sido estafado. “Pensé que llegaría más alto”, dijo su esposa. La desilusión de los niños no era menor. Al levantarse para irse, unos de ellos dijo con amargura: “Disneylandia es mejor”. Con lo que toda la familia estuvo de acuerdo.
