The problem of being awkward with introductions is not, for many, an “unusual situation.” You may find that you are often uncertain about whether to introduce someone using their first name, last name, or both; about whether to use a qualifier (“this is my friend, ______”); even about whether or not it is in fact your responsibility to introduce two people in a given situation. But all of this is small potatoes compared with the seemingly inevitable mingling nightmare of having to introduce someone whose name you have forgotten.

It’s one thing to forget someone’s name if you’ve met them only once or twice, or if you haven’t seen them in a while. But all too often it’s someone whose name you really should know, and who is going to be insulted to find out you don’t. In other words, a faux pas in the making.

This is absolute agony when it happens, and I’ve watched hundreds of minglers try to deal with different ways, ranging from exuberant apology (“Oh GOD, I’m so sorry, JEEZ, wow, I can’t believe I’ve forgotten your name!”) to throwing up their hands and walking away. But there are better ways to deal with this kind of mental slip. Next time you draw a blank while making introductions, try the following ploy:

Force them to introduce themselves. This is the smoothest and most effective way to handle your memory lapse. When it’s done well, no one will ever suspect you. If you have forgotten one person’s name in the group, turn to that person first and smile. Then turn invitingly to a person whose name you do remember and say, “This is Linden Bond,” turning back casually toward the forgotten person. The person whose name you haven’t mentioned yet will automatically (it’s a reflex) say “Nice to meet you, Linden, I’m Sylvia Cooper,” and usually offer a hand to shake.

Con frecuencia dudamos si presentar a alguien por su nombre de pila, por su apellido o por ambos, si agregar alguna explicación (del estilo “te presento a mi amigo ____”), e incluso si nos corresponde presentar a dos personas en una situación determinada. Pero todo esto no es nada comparado con la pesadilla, muchas veces inevitable en un contexto social, de tener que presentar a alguien cuyo nombre hemos olvidado.

Una cosa es olvidar el nombre de una persona a quien vimos apenas una o dos veces, o a quien no hemos visto en mucho tiempo, pero con demasiada frecuencia esto nos ocurre con personas cuyos nombres deberíamos saber, personas que, de percatarse de nuestro olvido, se sentirían insultadas. Pero existen mejores formas de hacer frente a este desliz de la memoria. La próxima vez que se quede en blanco al presentar a alguien, intente lo siguiente: impúlsela a que se presente a sí misma.

Esta es la estrategia más elegante y efectiva para lidiar con una omisión de este tipo, y si lo hace correctamente, nadie se dará cuenta. You will also have a brain scan using a procedure called magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to look for signs of XXX. For the MRI scan you will need to lie down and keep still in the scanner for approximately 30 minutes. During the procedure you will receive an injection with an imaging agent (dye) so that the scanner can better detect features in the brain. This imaging agent is routinely used in MRIs. In addition, if you are a woman who can have children, a pregnancy test from a urine sample will be performed before each MRI scan to ensure you are not pregnant. The MRI scan will not be performed if you are pregnant.

A lumbar puncture (spinal tap) to collect cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) for routine CSF testing and JC virus tests is recommended for all subjects, and is required for any subject that has been identified with signs or symptoms of XXX, including recent neurological findings, or MRI results suggestive of XXX. This determination may be by your study doctor, the neurologist, or an independent safety review panel that has been set up by the Sponsors to review test results (independent adjudication committee or IAC). In a lumbar puncture, the lower area of your back is numbed with a numbing medicine and a thin needle is inserted through the back into the spinal canal and a small amount (approximately 5 milliliters) of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) will be collected for laboratory evaluation. The entire test takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes and does not require general anesthesia. However, you may be required to lie flat, or nearly flat, on your back for a period of time after the procedure to reduce the chance of headache following the procedure. A sample of your CSF will be stored until all tests for XXX are completed. No additional testing will be performed on this CSF sample without obtaining your consent for those tests.

Because public health is a continually evolving field, it is essential to provide ample training opportunities for public health professionals. As a natural outgrowth of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Prevention Research Centers Program, training courses of many types have been developed for public health practitioners working in the field. This article describes three of the Prevention Research Center training program offerings: Evidence-based Public Health, Physical Activity and Public Health for Practitioners, and Social Marketing. These courses illustrate the commitment of the Prevention Research Centers Program to helping create a better trained public health workforce, thereby enhancing the likelihood of improving public health.

Asthma is a chronic, or ongoing, lung disease that involves inflammation and narrowing of the airways. Symptoms of asthma include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness or pain, breathing difficulty and an increased production of mucus. A severe asthma attack can lead to a feeling of suffocation or panic.
Asthma affects people of all ages, but the highest numbers occur among people between the ages of 5 and 17. Asthma rates among adults have risen sharply in recent years. People with allergies are especially prone to asthma and 75 to 80 percent of asthmatics are sensitive to dust, animal dander, pollen, mold or other common allergens. There is no routine screening to determine the likelihood of developing asthma. However, allergy testing may help identify asthma triggers, which often helps in the development of an effective treatment plan. Thanks to advances in medical treatment, most asthmatics are able to live fairly normal, healthy lives.
Asthma should be suspected in anyone who wheezes or has difficulty breathing for no apparent reason, particularly if there is a family history of asthma or allergic reaction. In diagnosing asthma, your doctor will take your medical history and perform a physical examination, which includes testing your lung function. Tests for allergies and blood gases and chest x-rays may also be performed.

Educational systems around the world are under increasing pressure to use the new information and communication technologies (ICTs) to teach students the knowledge and skills they need in the 21st century. The 1998 UNESCO World Education Report, Teachers and Teaching in a Changing World, describes the radical implications ICTs have for conventional teaching and learning. It predicts the transformation of the teaching-learning process and the way teachers and learners gain access to knowledge and information.

With the emerging new technologies, the teaching profession is evolving from an emphasis on teacher-centred, lecture-based instruction to student-centred, interactive learning environments. Designing and implementing successful ICT-enabled teacher education programmes is the key to fundamental, wide-ranging educational reforms.

Teacher education institutions may either assume a leadership role in the transformation of education or be left behind in the swirl of rapid technological change. For education to reap the full benefits of ICTs in learning, it is essential that pre- and in-service teachers are able to effectively use these new tools for learning. Teacher education institutions and programmes must provide the leadership for pre- and in-service teachers and model the new pedagogies and tools for learning.

Some practical answers to the increasing challenges posed by the new technologies to the teaching profession are offered in the present publication, entitled Information and Communication Technologies in Teacher Education: A Planning Guide. The document provides resources to help teacher educators, administrators and policy-makers better apply ICTs to teacher education programmes. The resources were developed by an international group of experts with extensive experience in the integration of ICTs into teacher preparation programmes.

The document proposes a framework for ICTs in teacher education, describes the essential conditions that must be met for successful technology integration and provides guidelines for the development of a strategic planning process. It also identifies important strategies for managing the change process in the teacher education programme as technology becomes a catalyst for transforming the teaching-learning process.

Los sistemas educativos de todo el mundo se enfrentan actualmente al desafío de utilizar las nuevas tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TICs) para proveer a sus alumnos con las herramientas y conocimientos necesarios para el siglo XXI. En 1998, el Informe Mundial sobre la Educación de la UNESCO "Los docentes y la enseñanza en un mundo en mutación", describió el profundo impacto de las TICs en los métodos convencionales de enseñanza y de aprendizaje, augurando también la transformación del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje y la forma en que docentes y alumnos acceden al conocimiento y la información.

Con el advenimiento de las nuevas tecnologías, el énfasis de la profesión docente está cambiando desde un enfoque centrado en el profesor y basado en clases magistrales, hacia una formación centrada principalmente en el alumno dentro de un entorno interactivo de aprendizaje. El diseño e implementación de programas de capacitación docente que utilicen las TICs efectivamente, es un elemento clave para lograr reformas educativas profundas y de amplio alcance.

Las instituciones de educación docente deberán optar entre asumir un papel de liderazgo en la transformación de la educación, o bien quedar rezagadas en el camino del incesante cambio tecnológico. Para que la educación pueda explotar al máximo los beneficios de las TICs en el proceso de aprendizaje, es esencial que tanto los futuros docentes como los docentes en actividad sepan utilizar estas herramientas. Las instituciones y los programas de formación deben liderar y servir como modelo para la capacitación tanto de futuros docentes como de docentes en actividad, en lo que respecta a nuevos métodos pedagógicos y nuevas herramientas de aprendizaje.

En la presente publicación, titulada Las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación en la Formación Docente: Guía de Planificación, se ofrecen algunas respuestas prácticas a los crecientes desafíos que presenta el uso de las nuevas tecnologías en la profesión docente. También se ofrecen algunos recursos para asistir a los educadores de docentes, administradores y aquellos encargados de trazar políticas educativas en la aplicación efectiva de las TICs a los programas de capacitación docente. Estos recursos fueron desarrollados por un grupo internacional de expertos con amplia experiencia en la integración de las TICs a los programas de formación docente.

El presente trabajo propone un marco conceptual para las TICs en la formación docente, describe las condiciones esenciales para una integración exitosa de la tecnología y sugiere lineamientos para desarrollar un proceso estratégico de planificación. También se identifican aquí valiosas estrategias para llevar adelante el proceso de cambio en los programas de capacitación docente, de tal modo que acompasen la transformación del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje, en la que la tecnología ha sido un importante catalizador.

São Paulo’s afternoon traffic was thick and heavy, ground to a halt by its ubiquitous security police. Their orders on that 31 October 1975 were to strangle all access to the city’s main Roman Catholic cathedral on the Praça da Sé in the centre of the city. (Ironically, the police dubbed its action Operação Guttenberg). A precedent-setting ecumenical memorial service, led by Roman Catholic cardinal Paulo Evaristo Arns, alongside officials and representatives of the Jewish, Protestant and Muslim communities, had been publicized to honour the life of Vladimir Herzog, a courageous Jewish journalist who had openly criticized the practices of the entrenched military government in Brazil. Detained by security agents of the Second Army, he had been viciously tortured and had died a few hours later – a “suicide”, according to the Army’s spokesman.
The traffic clamp-down turned out to be – for the authorities - embarrassingly ineffective. Over eight thousand persons weaved their way through police barricades and kilometres-long traffic jams to the city centre in protest of Herzog’s murder and to participate massively in the packed service, spilling out of the filled cathedral onto the Praça da Sé.
This singular public event, accompanied by immediate nation-wide protests and strikes, marked, according to at least one Brazilian observer, the beginning of the long ten-year process through which, finally, military de facto rule gave way to freedom of the press and to a restoration of democratic institutions in the country.

El tráfico vespertino de San Pablo era lento y pesado, paralizado por la omnipresente policía de seguridad. Ese día, 31 de octubre de 1975, habían recibido órdenes de entorpecer el acceso a la principal catedral católica romana de la ciudad, ubicada en pleno centro, sobre la Praça da Sé (Irónicamente, la policía apodó esta operación Operaçao Guttenberg), donde se llevaría a cabo una misa ecuménica sin precedentes, dirigida por el cardenal católico romano Paulo Evaristo Arns, y en presencia de autoridades y representantes de la comunidad judía, musulmana y protestante. La misa tenía como objetivo honrar la memoria de Vladimir Herzog, valiente periodista judío que se había atrevido a criticar abiertamente las prácticas del Gobierno militar de Brasil. Herzog, detenido por los agentes de seguridad del Segundo Ejército y cruelmente torturado, había fallecido unas horas después, según lo que el portavoz del Ejército calificó de “suicidio”.
El bloqueo del tráfico, planeado por las autoridades, resultó un verdadero fracaso.
