Historically, the returns from different types of assets have tended to vary with the stage of the global economic cycle. Consequently, we have conducted some research into past cycles, in an effort to predict different assets’ likely behaviour in the coming months. Obviously, however, these conclusions are based on historical data, and the pattern in any one cycle may diverge significantly from the norm.
To obtain a more balanced assessment, therefore, we have used two different key events as milestones in the economic cycle: the first rise in interest rates from the US Federal Reserve (Fed) after a period of rate stability; and the peak in the purchasing managers’ index of the Institute for Supply Management (ISM, previously known as the NAPM). The Fed tends to raise rates some months before the ISM reaches its high. And we have nine ISM peaks, versus six Fed rises. Yet, broadly, the two studies confirm one another, enabling us to draw some consistent conclusions.
