Honda S2000 safety features
When designing any open car, the loss of a fixed steel roof as a load bearing structure demands compensatory measures to maintain the body's rigidity. In terms of crash safety performance, it is vital to provide adequate rigidity to allow front and rear crumple zones to operate effectively.
At the Honda S2000’s heart lies what Honda has termed a 'high X-bone frame'. While the bodyshell is in effect a monocoque, what sets it apart is the manner in which the frame rails and centre tunnel combine to form an exceptionally rigid body-chassis. The 'X' element of the high X-bone frame refers to a notably deep centre tunnel, box-shaped in cross section to offer good resistance to torsional loads, and a pair of 'legs' at either end running diagonally. Those at the front connect directly with the front longitudinal frame rails to cradle the rear of the engine; those at the rear abut the rear chassis frame rails.
A key element in this design is the single horizontal plane formed by the top of the centre tunnel and the front and rear frame rails; since they are all set at the same height, they provide immense rigidity. The result is a body offering torsional rigidity equivalent to that of a closed one and a level of bending rigidity far superior to either open or closed conventional bodies.
The high X-bone frame is only part of the story, however. The side sills have been made particularly deep and connect with the front frame rails at the same point as the front legs of the centre tunnel. And running back from this same point is a straight, central floor member, which connects front and rear frame rails. This 'three point support structure' where the sill, frame rail, floor member and central tunnel all meet, is very efficient at distributing load. Together with the deep side sills, it makes the body extremely resistant to deformation to create a strong passenger cell.
In the event of an offset frontal collision, the high X-bone frame does not twist upon impact. Instead impact load is shared evenly between the central tunnel, which absorbs around 40 per cent of the energy, and the side sills and central floor element. Furthermore, the front side members are completely straight and constructed in high tensile steel (as indeed are the rear side members) to make them particularly effective at absorbing energy. Running across the centre of the passenger cabin is a sturdy middle cross-member which is designed to direct crash energy into the centre tunnel in the event of a major side impact.
The overall effect of this innovative design is therefore a structure that eliminates shakes and vibrations, ensures pin-sharp handling and steering characteristics and conforms to worldwide safety criteria to provide outstanding occupant protection in the event of an accident.
A windscreen surround specially strengthened by a tubular brace and a pair of fully trimmed roll hoops behind each seat with internal reinforcements and securely anchored to the high X-bone frame provide excellent occupant protection in the unlikely event of a roll-over accident.
A commitment to pedestrian safety
Honda continues to conduct extensive research into pedestrian safety centred on its Active Safety Vehicle, the ASV3, together with sophisticated pedestrian dummies, road accident analysis and computer-assisted accident simulation.
Specific items on the new CR-V include:
• an unobstructed area beneath the bonnet allowing it to deform on impact
• bonnet hinges, front wing mounting brackets and radiator top brackets that compress under impact

Lorsqu’on conçoit un cabriolet, l’absence d’un pavillon fixe en acier comme structure portante requière des mesures compensatoires afin d’assurer la rigidité de la carrosserie. Les résultats des crash-tests sont sans équivoque, une rigidité adéquate est nécessaire pour permettre aux zones déformables avant et arrière d’absorber efficacement les chocs.
Au cœur de la Honda S2000 se trouve ce que Honda a appelé un châssis en forme de X « high X-bone frame». Bien que l’ossature de la carrosserie soit de type monocoque, elle se distingue par la façon dont les longerons de cadre de châssis et le tunnel central se combinent entre-eux pour former un châssis de carrosserie exceptionnellement rigide. L’élément “X” du nouveau châssis se réfère à un tunnel central assez profond en forme de caisson profilé dans sa partie transversale qui offre une bonne résistance aux forces de torsion, ainsi qu’à une paire de montant placée en diagonale sur chaque côté. L’élément principal de ce concept est le plan horizontal de même hauteur formé par le sommet du tunnel central et les longerons de châssis avant et arrière, qui assure une rigidité immense. Le résultat est une carrosserie d’une rigidité aux torsions équivalente à celle construite avec un pavillon fermé et un niveau de flexibilité nettement supérieur à toutes les carrosseries conventionnelles dites ouvertes ou fermées.
Cette petite merveille a pourtant bien d’autres avantages. Notamment, les longerons latéraux ont été renforcés et assemblés avec les longerons avant du châssis au même endroit que les montants avant du tunnel central. Et partant de ce même point, une traverse sur le plancher central relie les longerons de châssis avant et arrière. Cette structure « à trois points de support », où se rencontrent la caisse, les longerons de cadre de châssis, le plancher et le tunnel central, est très efficace pour répartir les forces. Un ensemble qui, avec les longerons latéraux renforcés, rend l’ossature de la carrosserie extrêmement résistante à la déformation et crée un habitacle robuste.
En cas de déport dû à un choc frontal, le châssis en forme de X ne se plie pas lors de l’impact. Au contraire, la force de l’impact est partagée équitablement entre le tunnel central qui absorbe près de 40% de l’énergie, les longerons latéraux et l’élément du plancher central. Par ailleurs, les parties du longeron avant sont complètement droites et construites avec un acier de haute résistance ( tout comme les parties du longeron arrière) ce qui les rend particulièrement efficaces pour absorber l’énergie. Une traverse de châssis médiane robuste partant du centre de l’habitacle a été conçue pour transmettre l’énergie au tunnel central en cas de choc latéral important.
Le résultat final de ce concept innovant est donc, une structure permettant d’éliminer les secousses et les vibrations, tout en gardant des caractéristiques de tenue de route et de maniabilité d’une grande précision et qui répond aux critères de sécurité automobile mondiaux en matière de protection passive des occupants en cas d’accident.
Une embase de pare-brise spécialement consolidée par un renfort tubulaire et deux arceaux entièrement équipés derrière chaque siège avec des renforcements internes et solidement attaché au châssis en forme de X procurent une excellente protection en cas de tonneaux.
Un engagement l’égard de la sécurité piétonne.
Honda continue de mener des recherches en matière la sécurité piétonne en misant sur la sécurité active des véhicules, le ASV3. En outre, elle s’aide de mannequins sophistiqués et s’appuie sur les analyses des accidents de la route et les simulations d’accident assistées par ordinateur.
