The reconstruction of bridges destroyed during Bosnia?s wars is seen by locals and international organisations as reflecting a new spirit of co-operation and reconciliation between ethnic groups, according to news reports. Diplomats, locals and members of NATO?s Stabilisation Force (SFOR) welcomed the 6 December opening of the Ravno Bridge, which re-establishes a road connection between the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska, an SFOR report stated.
?The important thing is that this bridge behind me will link Ravno and Trebinje, facilitate the return of refugees and improve communication in this beautiful valley. Also, this project is an excellent example of co-operation ? between local authorities, the international organisations and SFOR as well,? said Maj. Gen. Richard Dannatt of the UK. Spanish SFOR engineers built the bridge, USAID co-ordinated overall planning, design and construction of the approach road, and the British government donated the bridge itself, according to SFOR.
?Why build the bridge here? Quite simply because we have heard of the remarkable co-operation between the mayors of Ravno and Trebinje. We have heard of their desire to restore prosperity to this area,? said British Ambassador Graham Hand, according to SFOR.
In Mostar, masons carved the first stone block to be used to rebuild the Bosnian city?s historic bridge, destroyed by artillery shells in 1993, AFP reported. The stricken bridge has remained a potent symbol of ethnic division in the country, with Mostar?s river still marking the split between its Muslim and Croat citizens.
