The increase of the world’s population and of its standard of living, the increase in the movement of people and goods, mass urban concentration… The world is taking on a new dimension. In just one century, the world’s population has increased 4-fold and there will be 2 billion more of us by 2025; so many people aspiring to a rising standard of living and sharing the same natural resources (water and wood), with fewer and fewer fossil reserves. Globalisation has led to what is today the greatest economic growth of the industrial era, increasing the exchange of people and products but also heightening security risks (terrorism, forgery, epidemics, etc.).
Exhaustion of fossil reserves, protection of natural environments, waste processing…Environmental challenges are accumulating and therefore altering the key role of paper producers and consumers. Eco-conception, sustainable forest management and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions have thus quickly become essential issues for the players of this industry.

El incremento de la población mundial y de su estándar de vida, el aumento en el movimiento de personas y mercancías, la concentración en centros urbanos... El mundo está tomando una nueva dimensión. Sólo en un siglo, la población mundial se ha incrementado 4 veces y habrá dos mil millones más en el 2025, tantas personas que aspiran a elevar su nivel de vida, compartiendo los mismos recursos naturales (agua y madera), con menos y menos reservas fósiles. La globalización ha llevado a lo que es hoy el mayor crecimiento económico de la era industrial, al elevarse el intercambio de personas y productos también se incrementan los riesgos de seguridad (terrorismo, falsificación, epidemias, etc.).
El agotamiento de las reservas fósiles, la protección de los ambientes naturales, el procesamiento de los desechos… Los desafíos relacionados al medioambiente se acumulan y por lo tanto alteran el rol básico de los productores y consumidores de papel. La conciencia ecológica, el manejo sustentable de los bosques y la reducción de las emisiones de gases que provocan el efecto invernadero se han convertido de esta manera rápidamente en temas esenciales para los jugadores de esta industria.
