Race Report: Act 13 - Race Six.
The local Spanish spectators had much to cheer about as their home team, Desafio Espanol, led the fleet from start to finish in the sixth race of Louis Vuitton Act 13 in Valencia today. BMW ORACLE Racing came into this race determined to improve their standing, but had to settle for 6th place.
This first win for the Spanish shuffled the overall leaderboard again in what has been a testing week with extremely unsettled weather.
BMW ORACLE Racing had a good start and, coming off the pin end of the line, took advantage of an early left hand shift.
Racing took place in 7-8 knots of breeze, which slowly built to 11-13 knots and shifted 30 degrees right during the course of the first windward leg.
This worked against USA 87, which was far out on the left side. However, the crew would have been gaining useful information as they lined up with Emirates Team New Zealand and Alinghi.
USA 87 was 4th around the first two marks, but were pinned on the left side of the course during the second windward leg with the wind trending right.
Coming in to the final mark rounding, USA 87 had done a good job of holding pace with the fleet and were setting up to slot into the starboard tack procession when the gap suddenly closed. Forced to making a large duck behind two yachts, USA 87 rounded in 6th place.
On the run to the finish, USA 87 gybed early to find clear air and try to mount an attack, but finally crossed the finish line in 6th with the Spanish 1st, Alinghi 2nd and Emirates Team New Zealand 3rd. | Translation - Spanish
