Eight Tibetan nuns commenced the making of 100,000 tsha-tsha: small votive images made of clay and filled with Tibetan prayer scrolls. In February 1999, Chatral Rinpoche performed the sa blang (earth-taking ritual), requesting permission from the earth deities and local spirits to construct the stupa. In March, the foundation was dug and the five kalasha (auspicious vases symbolizing prosperity) were placed in the foundation. The vast number of tsha-tsha were placed in the chamber of the base of the stupa during April and May.
In August, monks prepared the 4.8m, solid juniper tsokl-shing (‘life-tree’ or centre pole) by painting the wood red and writing auspicious texts in gold, wrapping the pole in paper strips inscribed with sacred texts, wrapping the whole in silk, and finally encasing it in copper to preserve it. In September, the installation of the tsok-shing took place with appropriate ritual. In October, the gajur (crowning jewel ornament), which Newari craftsmen fire-gilded using 180g of gold, was carried up the bamboo scaffolding and set atop the rings while Chatral Rinpoche and his monks intoned chants and prayers.
