| Translation - English World’s toughest hydraulic breaker paves the way for rail connection to Oslo airport
Oslo Gardermoen is a major Scandinavian airline hub and, for Norway, a gateway to the world. Not only is it one of the most modern airports in the world, where passengers are able to clear their own goods through customs automatically, it has also experienced phenomenal growth in terms of passengers - almost 1.8 million people passed through Gardermoen in August last year, an increase of 5.44% compared to the previous year. The number of passengers per year will most probably soon surpass the 25 million mark.
Local transport bottle neck
High capacity at the airport requires a smooth, efficient flow of traffic to the centre of Oslo. The airport lies 50 km from the city. Anyone who has ever driven a car around the Norwegian capital will confirm the need for stress-free alternatives to the heavy traffic, one-way streets and hefty parking fees. Such an alternative is rail.
NSB, the Norwegian State Railways, offers a frequent service along the route to the airport with a train running every 20 minutes at peak times. However, passenger volumes have long exceeded train capacities. In order not to jeopardise further development at the airport and, above all, to offer passengers greater convenience, the decision was made to expand a section of the railway. According to planners, an improved frequency of trains should offer relief to the whole local transport network.
Special solution required
It was soon very clear that the project would be particularly challenging. Blasting was not an option due to environmental considerations, extremely high costs and the existence of neighbouring residential areas. The 900-metre-long extension required around 71,000 m3 of exceptionally resilient and precipitous rock to be removed. This is where Product X came into play, the toughest series production hydraulic breaker in the world from Company X.
The demolition company Company Y started off by using the Product Y. “Able to remove about 1,300 m3 per week, it certainly is a powerful little tool,” says company boss and excavation manager John Erik Hegna about the Product Y. “But in order to keep to our tight schedule we needed an even more effective solution, the Product X.”
Its striking force of about 760 tonnes and ability to excavate over 2,000 m3 a week should ensure the scheduling target is safely met.
Product X assures efficiency
“A further advantage is offered by the Company X Product X service contract,” adds Hegna. “There are no further costs for using our machines and we benefit from the know-how provided by Company X employees who plan and carry out servicing and maintenance.” The contract also offers advantages for Tom Erik Larsen, Business Line Manager for Company X Norway. “We work proactively and optimise planning for breaker servicing. A service contract gives us the opportunity to optimise servicing for hydraulic breakers. We are thus assured the highest level of productivity.”
As our experience in Oslo shows, Product X represents the beginning of a new service category. If blasting is out of the question, rock removal is constrained by particular requirements, or time is a factor, the immense effectiveness of this mega breaker and its unique performance is a first-rate alternative.
A new passenger terminal is scheduled to open at Oslo Gardermoen for 2011. It’s highly likely that Product X will also be used on this project.

1.- Basic regulatory provisions concerning gaming in Catalonia
Since the inception of its previous Statute of Autonomy in 1979, the Autonomous Region of Catalonia has held jurisdiction over gambling, betting, or games of chance within its regional territory, as established in article 9.32 of the aforementioned law.
As a demonstration of the Catalan Regional Government’s exclusive competence with regard to casinos, gaming and betting, it brought in the Ley 15/1984 de 20 de marzo del Juego (Law 15, March 20, 1984 on Gaming), which constituted the first legal regulation on such matters introduced by an autonomous region.
The aforementioned law covers the following:
a) Activities where quantities of money or objects of economic value are put at risk as a stake, bet or entry to a pools competition against the outcome of a future or uncertain event. This is regardless of the fact whether such an activity depends on the extent of skill, ability, or expertise of participants, or whether it exclusively or mainly involves chance, luck, or placing a stake. It is also regardless of the fact whether the activity is carried out using automatic machines or through human action.
b) Companies which run and operate gaming and betting systems, or which manufacture gaming material and equipment, or which carry out related activities.
c) Premises where gaming and betting systems are run and operated.
d) Persons who run, operate, or take part in gaming and betting systems.
However, the law excludes leisure and recreational gaming and betting which constitute a social purpose. Such cases must be traditional in nature, or take place within a family setting, and no money or material goods are transferred between players. Moreover, outsiders to such contexts are not permitted to make a profit from such activities.
Article 3 of the aforementioned Ley 15/1984 de 20 de marzo del Juego states that approval of the catalogue of licensed games and betting systems is the responsibility of the Catalan Government.
