MARS ROVERS HUNKER DOWN TO WEATHER SPACE SANDSTORMS
WASHINGTON (AFP) - After three years on Mars, NASA rovers built for a three-month mission face their toughest foe: Martian sandstorms blocking the sunlight that charges their batteries.
As a result, NASA has ordered rovers Spirit and Opportunity nearly into hibernation, cutting communication with Earth to save vital energy for heaters that keep their delicate innards from freezing.
"We're rooting for our rovers to survive these storms, but they were never designed for conditions this intense," said NASA associate administrator Alan Stern.
By Tuesday, NASA stopped any driving and all Opportunity's science observations, but the rover was still using more energy than its solar panels could generate, and drew down its battery.
"The only thing left to cut were some of the communication sessions," said John Callas, project manager for the twin rovers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California.
That was the first time either rover had been told to skip communications for a day or more to save energy.
"We are taking more aggressive action with both rovers than we needed before," Callas said.
Engineers calculate that communications blackouts should lower daily energy use to less than 130 watt hours. That leaves little juice for the rovers' heaters, which prevent damage to their vital core electronics.
Spirit, Opportunity's antipode, is suffering less from the storms, but produced below the rovers' 700 watt hours prior to the storms. That is enough electricity to burn a 100-watt bulb for seven hours.
When dust storms cut daily output to 400 watt hours, NASA cut driving and observations, which make use of the robotic arm, cameras and spectrometers.
The unmanned, remote-controlled rovers landed on Mars to scan its surface in search of signs of water and other components, making use of their instruments to take close-up looks at rocks along the ridges and craters of the planet most like Earth. | Translation - French

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Trois années déjà passées sur Mars alors qu'ils ne devaient en rester que pour trois mois, les rovers de la Nasa font face cette fois-ci à l'élément le plus redouté, les fameuses tempêtes de sable martiennes, qui empêchent la lumière du soleil de ravitailler leurs batteries.
Spirit et Opportunity restent scotchés sur les ordres de la Nasa : point d'activité ou presque et même pas de communication avec la Terre-mère, motif, garder autant d'énergie pour les radiateurs, la survie des composants internes menacés par le gèle en dépendrait.
"Nous limitons les activités pour échapper à cette tempête, le hic, les conditions aussi hostiles n'ont été prisent en compte dans nos dessins initiaux", a fait entendre l'administrateur délégué de la Nasa, Alan Stern.
Dès mardi déjà, la Nasa fût contrainte d'arrêter tout déplacement et observation scientifique entrepris par Opportunity. Mais, lorsque plus d'énergie est consommée que ne parviennent à colmater les panneaux soleils du rover, il va s'en dire - la batterie se vide toujours.
Comme l'aurait indiqué John Callas, chef de projet des rovers jumeaux à la Jet Propulsion Laboratory à Pasadena en Californie, "la seule solution restant est d'arrêter une partie des sessions de communication".
Une première pour les deux rovers, car ceux-ci n'ont jamais cessé d'émettre auparavant pendant un jour entier et plus pour motif d'économiser de l'énergie.
Et Callas d'ajouter, "Nous prenons des mesures agressives pour les deux rovers bien plus que nous ne l'avons fait auparavant".
Alors même que les calcules ressortis par les ingénieurs affirment qu'une baisse journalière de consommation d'énergie de 130 watts/heure en résulte lorsque la communication est arrêtée, jusqu'à là les composants électroniques critiques maintenus en vie par les radiateurs des rovers ne sont pas trop assurés.
L'autre rover, l'antipode de Opportunity, Spirit, serait moins sur la menace de la tempête quoiqu'il en produit bien moins que les 700 watts/heure habituels d'avant la tempête. Voilà ce qui suffirait à maintenir une ampoule de 100 watts allumée pendant sept heures.
La Nasa là aussi dispose d'un stratagème pour faire face à la tempête qui fait descendre la capacité journalière de Spirit jusqu'à 400 watts/heure : réduire les déplacements et les observations auxquels le bras robotique, les cameras et les spectromètres y sont associés.
En résumé, cette mission non habitée a été conçu pour faire amarcir les deux rovers télécontrôlés et ce derniers ont comme mission d'effectuer des balayages sur la surface martienne afin de trouver une quelconque trace éventuelle d'eau et autres matières, et par le biais des instruments incorporés produire des gros plans des roches bordant les arrêtes et cratères de la sœur voisine de la Terre. |
