Witold Gombrowicz (1904–1969) – powieściopisarz, dramaturg, eseista. Pochodził z zamożnej rodziny ziemiańskiej. Ukończył prawo na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim i rozpoczął pracę w sądownictwie, ale po udanym debiucie tomem groteskowych opowiadań pt. Pamiętnik z okresu dojrzewania (1933) poświęcił się wyłącznie literaturze. Rozgłos w kręgu elity kulturalnej przyniosła mu pełna brawurowego humoru, nie pozbawiona filozoficznego przesłania, powieść Ferdydurke (1937), której bohater, dorosły mężczyzna sprowadzony do roli nastolatka, boryka się ze skostniałymi konwencjami społecznymi (patriotyczna dydaktyka szkolna, dom nowoczesnego inteligenta, tradycyjny dwór ziemiański).
W sierpniu 1939 r. autor wybrał się w podróż do Argentyny, gdzie zastał go wybuch II wojny światowej i gdzie przebywał do 1963 r. Przez wiele lat borykał się z trudnościami finansowymi i doświadczał dotkliwej nędzy, i dopiero w 1947 r. zdobył skromną posadę w Banco Polaco, która pozwalała mu zaspokoić elementarne potrzeby i oddać się pracy pisarskiej.
W 1951 r. nawiązał współpracę ze słynnym (obecnie), wychodzącym w Paryżu, emigracyjnym miesięcznikiem „Kultura”. W 1953 r. na łamach tego czasopisma zaczął prowadzić swój Dziennik. Kontynuował go aż do końca życia, wydając sukcesywnie w formie książkowej kolejne tomy. Tematyka Dziennika jest różnorodna – począwszy od trywialnych szczegółów związanych z życiem codziennym po wielką polemikę z marksizmem, egzystencjalizmem, katolicyzmem. To kluczowe dzieło Gombrowicza pozwoliło mu wyjaśnić wiele nękających go sprzeczności, np. między autobiografizmem a fikcją, między samoistnym charakterem dzieła a jego funkcją w dramatyzowaniu relacji łączącej autora z czytelnikiem, między dyskursywnym przesłaniem a bezinteresowną grą wyobraźni.
W tym czasie obecność Gombrowicza na arenie literackiej, najprzód polskiej, później międzynarodowej, stawała się coraz bardziej widoczna. Opublikował wówczas sztukę teatralną Ślub (1953), będącą transpozycją jego interakcyjnej filozofii człowieka na całkowicie nowy język dramatyczny, uformowany na podłożu szekspirowsko-romantycznym, oraz satyryczną powieść Trans-Atlantyk (1953), stylizowaną na staropolską gawędę, w której dokonał obrazoburczej rozprawy z najświętszymi stereotypami patriotycznymi i, po raz pierwszy [w literaturze polskiej], otwarcie wprowadził tematykę homoseksualną. W następnej powieści, Pornografii (1960), której akcja rozgrywa się w scenerii okupowanej przez nazistów Polski, odsłonił sekretne, mocno erotyczne i dewiacyjne motywacje kierujące niepodległościowymi konspiratorami, podobnie jak i bohaterami jego pozostałych utworów.
W 1965 roku przeniósł się do Francji, gdzie związał się z poznaną tam młodą kanadyjską romanistką, Ritą Labrosse, i osiadł na stałe w Vence. Tam też ukazały się drukiem Kosmos (1965) oraz Operetka (1966).
Witold Gombrowicz był jednym z tych pisarzy środkowoeuropejskich, którzy fakt zacofania cywilizacyjnego własnego kraju umieli wykorzystać do krytycznego spojrzenia na nowoczesną myśl i sztukę swoich czasów. Stworzył dzieła wybiegające w daleką przyszłość – pomógł przenieść się swoim czytelnikom ze świata modernizmu w świat postmodernizmu. W Polsce wywarł niezmierny wpływ na literaturę, ale jeszcze płodniejszą okazała się jego inspiracja w teatrze – bez niego nie mielibyśmy ani Tadeusza Kantora, ani Jerzego Grotowskiego. We Francji w jego twórczości odnajdywali się kolejno egzystencjaliści, strukturaliści i dekonstrukcjoniści. Chociaż jego utwory stały się strawą dla wybrednych intelektualistów, pozostał autorem „do czytania”, autorem książek atrakcyjnych już w swojej warstwie zewnętrznej, dzięki sensacyjnej fabule, groteskowym postaciom, czarnemu humorowi, wreszcie niezwykłej elastyczności języka, obejmującego wszystkie rejestry stylistyczne.
O spektaklu
Torunianie zaprosili do realizacji znanych z festiwalu Kontakt estońskiego reżysera Elmo Nüganena i Vladasa Bagdonasa, litewskiego aktora „od Nekrosiusa”. Dla obydwu było to pierwsze zetknięcie z Gombrowiczowską poetyką, bez nawyków, klisz i sprawdzonych chwytów. Być może dlatego powstało przedstawienie niezwykle jasne i to w obydwu sensach tego słowa. Utrzymane w jasnych barwach, inaczej niż rodzime inscenizacje zwykle zatopione w sugerującej przepastne głębie czerni. A także precyzyjnie zrozumiałe w kolejnych przekształceniach Henryka – żołnierza w okopach wojny, śniącego rodzinną siedzibę, wynaturzającego siłą własnej myśli to wspomnienie, czyniącego się królem wśród dworu, potem dyktatorem w stalinowskim mundurze. Do każdej z tych faz Nüganen starannie dobierał środki inscenizacji, podporządkowywał myśli bohatera całą przestrzeń, często dowcipnie (wahadło zamierające w wychylonej pozycji na rozkaz Henryka).

Nüganen dokonał rzeczy wprost niezwykłej: poszedł szlakiem Swinarskiego i przeczytał wraz z aktorami dramat krok za krokiem, dogłębnie, przez swoją i ich wrażliwość, a nie poprzez sterty interpretacji, których powstało już mnóstwo.

Jest „Ślub” Nüganena dramatem świadomości w ontologicznej pustce – tylko tym i aż tylko tym. Rezygnacja z kontekstu wojny odświeżyła mnóstwo innych znaczeń. Ich sceniczny wyraz to uczta dla miłośników Gombrowicza w każdej warstwie tego przedstawienia: w świetnej scenografii Anny Sekuły, muzyce Arvo Pärta i wspaniałym aktorstwie. O aktorach
Okazało się, że tekst (z 1946 r., nieco skrócony) autora, który nie chodził do teatru, nie brzmi anachronicznie. Ba, skrzy się dowcipem, wzrusza, zaskakuje!
Wzrusza zwłaszcza wtedy, gdy wielki litewski aktor Vladas Bagdonas mówi tekst po polsku, z charakterystycznym, kresowym zaśpiewem i z absolutnym zrozumieniem: do widza dociera sens każdego słowa i każdego zdania. Jego wejście na scenę z brzemieniem stołu na plecach jest elementem reżyserskiego zamysłu, ale będzie się je pamiętać jako wejście Bagdonasa. Pomysł ten powraca jako zaskakujące i inspirujące zakończenie przedstawienia w wykonaniu Sławomira Maciejewskiego, grającego Henryka. To druga znakomita rola w tym spektaklu. Maciejewskiemu udaje się sztuka równoczesnego grania kilku postaci. Nazwanych i nienazwanych przez Gombrowicza. To rzeczywiście jest polski Ryszard III i polski Hamlet, ale też romantyczny kreator we współczesnej skórze jakiegoś sympatycznego, lekko na koniec bezradnego brutalisty. Dzięki Maciejewskiemu nie gubi się ani sens opowiadanej na scenie historii, ani logika snu, który mu się śni. Wózek inwalidzki w III akcie jest pozostałością ostatniego etapu prób, gdy aktor, potrącony przez samochód, tylko w ten sposób mógł pracować. W kreacji tej nie ma zresztą niczego z iluzji.
Znakomitym pomysłem teatralnym jest rozdwojenie postaci Pijaka. U Nüganena grają go brawurowo Jarosław Felczykowski i Paweł Tchórzelski. Szczególnie warta uwagi jest scena, w której przekonują Henryka, by zdradził Ojca i wziął los w swoje ręce.
Bardzo starannie prowadzone w tym przedstawieniu są wszystkie role (nawet najmniejsze). Powiedzieć to trzeba szczególnie o Jolancie Tesce (przekonująca Matka, Królowa) i Marii Kierzkowskiej (Mania, Księżniczka – stylizowana na dziewkę i świętą z obrazka).

Niezwykle wiarygodny jest Bagdonas w roli Ojca, z jego polską wymową naznaczoną kresowym zaśpiewem. Również z jego patriarchalną powagą szlachcica – gospodarnego dziedzica, który sam musiał dbać o mały majątek, o to, by życie we dworku toczyło się zgodnie z ustalanym przez niego rytmem. Król-Ojciec Bagdonasa jest prostoduszny i prostolinijny. Bóg, honor, hierarchia wartości, poszanowanie, czystość, ceremonie... To on pierwszy musi skosztować zupy przy stole, on – zarządza, dyktuje, kto z kim w rytm poloneza pójdzie do stołu. Znakomitym kontrapunktem jest w tym spektaklu rola Henryka Sławomira Maciejewskiego – rezonera, nieufnego intelektualisty, który patrzy na to wszystko niczym na jedną wielką farsę. Jego Henryk jest bywały w świecie, racjonalny, pragmatyczny. Niby to daje się wciągnąć w ten „pijany świat”, a zarazem wciąż komentuje go na boku, nawiązuje z widzami dialog. Dopiero podpuszczony przez Pijaków-Ambasadorów „dutknie” Ojca i „upije się snem o nadczłowieczej władzy”. Trzeci akt – to szekspirowski teatr „wielkiego mechanizmu”. Henryk Maciejewskiego w białej koszuli i czarnych skórzanych spodniach przypomina Hamleta i Ryszarda III zarazem.
Jest w tym spektaklu mnóstwo wspaniałych ról (choćby fenomenalna Mania Marii Kierzkowskiej, w białej sukni ustylizowana na Ofelię i Matkę Boską jednocześnie), znakomity jest dwór – zindywidualizowany, ale też poddany choreograficznej dyscyplinie. O każdym z wykonawców wypadałoby napisać osobno, tworzą bowiem małe perełki aktorskie.

Patologia rodziny to także jeden z głównych wątków "Ślubu" z toruńskiego Teatru im. Wilama Horzycy. Dramat Witolda Gombrowicza, w którym ludzka potrzeba kreatywności, popychana przez zazdrość, przeradza się w zło przemocy i tyranii, Estończyk Elmo Nüganen wystawił w konwencji baśni grozy. Uwiarygodnili ją rewelacyjni wykonawcy: litewski aktor Vladas Badgdonas w roli Ojca, Maria Kierzkowska jako Mania, Paweł Tchórzelski i Jarosław Felczykowski w podwójnym wcieleniu postaci Pijaka. Szczególnie zaś Sławomir Maciejewski w czystym i szczerym wizerunku Henryka.

Znakomita w tej pierwszej części jest Maria Kierzkowska. Scena przy stole z jej udziałem na pewno pozostanie w pamięci widzów. Gdy Katarzyna (matka) prosi ją o zebranie naczyń, Kierzkowska rzuca się z dziką pasją na stół między te wszystkie miski. Widzimy nienawiść w najczystszej postaci, drapieżną negację zastałego ceremoniału.
A role główne? Są wybitne. Bagdonas swoją postacią inspiruje chyba wszystkich na scenie. Jego dostojeństwo przejawia się w porażającej formie. Gdy z dramatycznym zaśpiewem krzyczy „świnia”, gdy z rozpaczą domaga się nietykalności, opędza od dręczących go pijaków (Paweł Tchórzelski, Jarosław Felczykowski – znakomici jak wszyscy) i gdy w końcu staje się skopaną ofiarą. Bagdonas to metafizyka, ale targana ludzkim smutkiem i rozpaczą. Ten „ulubieniec Nekrošiusa” pokazał, że wielki aktor, to ten, który talentem obdzieli także partnerów, podzieli się swoją energią i sercem do gry. Taki właśnie jest Bagdonas i dlatego trudno od niego oderwać oczy.
Magnetyzm Bagdonasa jeszcze bardziej pozwolił zaistnieć Sławomirowi Maciejewskiemu, choć tenże – co podkreślam – sam w sobie jest znakomity. W tekście Gombrowicza Henryk nie jest „sympatyczną postacią”. W zasadzie dźwiga wszelkie nasze kulturowe obciążenia: megalomanię, Konradowską pychę, etc.

Witold Gombrowicz (1904–1969) – novelist, playwright, essayist. He came from a family of wealthy landed gentry. Having graduated in law from Warsaw University, he began working for the judiciary, but following his successful debut as a writer with the publication of a volume of grotesque short stories entitled Memoirs of a Time of Immaturity (1933), he dedicated his time entirely to literature. It was his novel Ferdydurke (1937), full of daring humour and far from bereft of philosophical reasoning, which brought him renown within the circle of the cultural elite. The novel’s protagonist, reduced to the role of an adolescent, grapples with rigid social conventions (patriotic didactics in school, the home of a member of the contemporary intelligentia, a traditional landed-gentry manor house).
In August 1939, Gombrowicz set out on a journey to Argentina where, caught by the outbreak of World War II, he remained until 1963. For many years he struggled with financial difficulties, experiencing affliction and misery and it was not until 1947 that he obtained a modest position with Banco Polaco, enabling him to satisfy his most fundamental needs and devote himself to writing.
In 1951, he became affiliated to the now-famous émigré monthly magazine, Culture, published in Paris. In 1953, in the columns of that publication, he began to publish his Diary and he continued to do so, with successive volumes appearing in book form until the end of his life. The subjects addressed in the Diary are diverse – from the trivial details of everyday life to great polemics on Marxism, existentialism and Catholicism. This key work allowed him to elucidate many of the contradictions which bothered him, such as those between autobiography and fiction, between a work’s independent character and its function in dramatising the author-reader relationship, between the discursive message and the disinterested play of the imagination.
During this period, Gombrowicz’s presence was becoming increasingly visible, firstly in the Polish and then in the international literary arena. It was at that time that his play, The Marriage (1953), was published, a transposition of his interactive philosophy of humankind to what was for him the wholly new language of drama, moulded around a foundation of Shakespearian romanticism. That same year saw the publication of a satiric novel, Transatlantic, a stylised Old Polish causerie in which he effects an iconoclastic debate on the most sacred patriotic stereotypes and, for the first time (in Polish literature), openly introduces the theme of homosexuality. In his next novel, Pornography (1960), whose action takes place against the background of Nazi-occupied Poland, he reveals the secret, powerfully erotic and deviant motivations driving the conspirators of the independence movement, in a way similar to the protagonists of his other works.
In 1965 he moved to France, where he became involved with a young Canadian specialist in Romance studies, Rita Labrosse, whom he met there and with whom he settled permanently in Vence. It was there that Cosmos (1965) and Operetta (1966) were published..
Witold Gombrowicz was one of those Central European writers who was able to use the fact of his own country’s backward civilization in order to look critically at modern thought and the art of his era. He created works which were far ahead of their time, helping his readers to move from the world of modernism to that of post-modernism. In Poland he was to have an immense influence on literature; however, he was to prove even more fertile as an inspiration to the theatre – without him we would have had neither Tadeusz Kantor nor Jerzy Grotowski. In France, subsequent existentialists, structuralists and deconstructuralists were to relate to his works. Although these works have become food for fastidious intellectuals, he has remained a ‘readable’ author, an author of books whose outer strata are immediately attractive, thanks to their sensational plots, grotesque characters, black humour and, finally, to their extraordinary linguistic flexibility, incorporating every stylistic register.
About the production
Known from Toruń’s International Theatre Festival, “Contact”, the Estonian director, Elmo Nüganen, and Vladas Bagdonas, the Lithuanian actor ‘from Nekrošius’, were invited by Toruń to work on the production. For both of them this was the first encounter with Gombrowicz’s poetics, an encounter without habits, cliches or tried and tested devices. This may be why a production of extraordinary brightness and clarity has come into being. Keeping to bright hues, unlike native productions drowned in suggestive, fathomlessly deep black. Precise and lucid in the successive transformations of Henryk; a soldier in the trenches, dreaming of his family seat, perverting this memory through the strength of his own thoughts, becoming the king of a court and then a dictator in a Stalinesque uniform. Each of these phases is meticulously staged by Nüganen with the entire space subordinate to the protagonist’s thoughts, often wittily (the pendulum ceasing in mid-swing at Henryk’s command).

Nüganen has accomplished something straightforward and unusual: following in the footsteps of Swinarski, he and the actors have read the drama step by step, in depth and via his own and their sensitivity rather than via the stacks of interpretation of which there are many.

Nüganen’s The Marriage is a drama of the awareness of ontological emptiness – this alone and only this. Relinquishing the context of war has refreshed many other meanings. In every layer of this production their theatrical expression is a feast for lovers of Gombrowicz: in Anna Sekuła’s set design, Arvo Pärt’s music and the wonderful performances. It is with great class that the William Horzyc Theatre has entered the roll call of Gombrowicz Year celebrants.

About the actors
The script (in this production somewhat shortened), which was written by an author who did not go to the theatre, proves not to sound anachronistic. Indeed, it sparkles with wit, it is moving and it takes one by surprise.
It is especially moving when the great Lithuanian actor, Vladas Bagdonas, speaks the Polish text in the characteristic sing-song manner of the Eastern borderlands and with absolute understanding; the sense of every word and of every sentence reaches the audience. His entrance, burdened by the table on his back, is the director’s concept, but it will be remembered as Bagdonas’s entrance. The idea returns as an ending to the performance which, as played by Sławomir Maciejewski in the role of Henryk, is both surprising and inspiring. This is the production’s next performance of excellence. Maciejewski succeeds in the art of playing several characters at once, some named by Gombrowicz and some not. This is, of course, the Polish Richard III and the Polish Hamlet, but also a romantic poser in the contemporary skin of a likeable but, at the end, somewhat helpless brute. Thanks to Maciejewski, neither the sense of the tale told on the stage nor the logic of Henryk’s dreams is lost. The wheelchair in the third act appears as a consequence of the final stages of rehearsal when, having been knocked down by a car, the actor could work in no other way. But then, in this production there is nothing of illusion.
Splitting the character of the Drunkard in two is an outstanding theatrical device and it is realised with bravura in the performances of Jarosław Felczykowski and Paweł Tchórzelski. Especially worthy of attention is the scene in which they persuade Henryk to betray the Father and take fate into his own hands.
Every role in this production (even the smallest) is meticulously observed. In particular this must be said of Jolanta Teska (a convincing Mother and Queen) and of Maria Kierzowska (Mania, Princess – maidenly and a picture of saintliness).

At one and the same time dignified and effortless, Bagdonas’s performance inspires Sławomir Maciejewski to create in Henryk a remarkable role in which, with a gentle smile concealing his unease, he explores the limits of his own creative abilities.

Bagdonas is singularly credible in the role of the Father, not only in his Polish delivery, which is marked by the sing-song manner of the Eastern borderlands, but also in his patriachal solemnity, which is that of a gentleman farmer and squire who must himself attend to his small estate in order that the life of the manor house may go on according to the rhythm he has established. King-Father Bagdonas is ingenuous and straightforward. God, honour, a hierachy of values, respect, integrity, ceromony . . . At the table, it is he who should first taste the soup; it is he who ordains, dictates who should proceed, to the rhythm of the Polonaise, with whom to the table. In this production, Sławomir Maciejewski’s Henryk is a superb counterpoint to this - a reasoner, a mistrustful intellectual who looks upon all of this as nothing but one great farce. His Henryk is worldly-wise, rational, pragmatic. Apparantly allowing himself to be drawn into this “drunken world”, but at the same time commenting on it in asides, he establishes a dialogue with the audience. After being egged on by the Drunkards-Ambassadors, he “touches” the Father and “becomes intoxicated by the Nietzschean superman’s dream of power”. The third act – this is the ‘great engine’ of Shakespearean theatre. In a white shirt and black leather trousers, Maciejewski’s Henryk recalls for us both Hamlet and Richard III.
In this production there are a whole host of wonderful performances (phenomenal even, in the case of Maria Kierzowska’s Mania, styled, in a white dress, as Ophelia and the Mother of God at one and the same time); the court is excellent; individualised but also observing choreographic discipline. It would be fitting to write about every actor individually since every performance is a pearl.

The dysfunctional family is also one of the main themes of Toruń’s William Horzyc Theatre production of The Marriage. Witold Gombrowicz’s drama, in which the human need for creativity, driven by envy, turns into the evil of violence and tyranny, is presented by the Estonian, Elmo Nüganen, using the convention of fairy tale terror. This is made authentic by the actors’ sensational performances: the Lithuanian actor, Vladas Bagdonas in the role of Father, Maria Kierzowska as Mania, Paweł Tchórzelski and Jarosław Felczykowski as the double personification of the character of the Drunkard. And especially Sławomir Maciejewski’s clear and direct portrayal of Henryk.

In the first part, Maria Kierzowska is superb. The scene at the table with her participation is certain to remain in the audience’s memory. When Katarzyna (the Mother) asks her to clear away, Kierzkowska throws herself with a wild passion on to the table amongst all the dishes. We see hatred in its purest form, a predatory negation of stagnant ceremonial.
And the leading roles? They are outstanding. Everyone on the stage is probably inspired by Bagdonas’s role. His grandeur takes transfixing forms. When, in a dramatic sing-song, he cries “Pig”, when, in despair he demands inviolability, driving away the Drunkards who are tormenting him (Paweł Tchórzelski and Jarosław Felczykowski – excellent, as is everyone) and when, in the end, he becomes a downtrodden victim. Bagdonas is metaphysics, but tormented by human sorrow and despair. This ‘favourite of Nekrošius’ demonstrates that a great actor is one who also gives talent to his partners, who shares his energy and love of performing. Such a one is Bagdonas, which is why it is difficult to tear one’s eyes away from him.
Even more, Bagdonas’s magnetism allows Sławomir Maciejewski to come into being although, as I would stress, he is in himself excellent. In Gombrowicz’s script, Henryk is not a likeable character. By and large, he bears our entire cultural burden: megalomania, Conradian hubris, etc.

Woyzeck – streszczenie
Akcja dramatu, który rozgrywa się na scenie umieszczona została w podwójnej przestrzeni – we wzajemnie przenikających się sferach sacrum i profanum. Konstrukcja świata złożonego z sukien ślubnych i ołtarza barokowego stanowi budulec Civitas Dei, zakład fryzjerski, lustra i fotel – budulec Civitas Diaboli.
W takim obszarze, we współczesnych realiach i kostiumach usytuowany jest tytułowy bohater – Franek. Postać ta – niezwykle skomplikowana wewnętrznie - stanowi odbicie konfliktu między racjonalnością a jej brakiem, uosobienie sporu o to, co nazwać można normalnością. Dopiero na tej bazie zbudowana zostaje akcja sztuki, gdzie fabuła staje się pretekstem do opowiedzenia pewnej historii, takiej, w której Woyzeck, zdradzony przez narzeczoną, posuwa się do zamordowania jej.
To, co najistotniejsze w tym spektaklu odbywa się jednak w bohaterach, a właściwie w nośnikach pewnych postaw i wyborów, które reprezentują poszczególne postacie dramatu. Zagubiony, „nieżyciowy”, schizofreniczny Franek koncentruje w sobie zarówno świat realny, jak i ten, który okazuje się nieprzystosowany (pomimo atrybutów świętości w rzeczywistości) – idealny. Ta dychotomia doprowadza do tragedii Woyzecka – i znowu tragedii podwójnej: życiowej ( morduje osobę, którą kocha) i tej na gruncie ideologicznym (zabójstwo jako takie jest złem).
Konsekwencją są tutaj rodzące się pytania, czy we współczesnym, brutalnym, pełnym wrzawy świecie jest miejsce na taki system wartości, który umożliwiłby zwyczajne przeżycie i nie uciekał w sferę schizofrenii, ułudy? I czy każdy z nas nie chcąc stać się jednym z bohaterów dramatu - dresiarzem, niewierną dziewczyną lub głupią trzpiotką nie staje się w jakiejś części Woyzeckiem?

The action is played out in a double space – in the mutually pervasive spheres of the sacred and the profane. A world whose construction consists of wedding gowns and a Baroque altar as the building bricks of Civitas Dei and a hairdressering salon, a mirror and barber’s chair as the construction blocks of Civita Diaboli.
It is in such a setting, within contemporary realia and costumes, that the main protagonist, Franek (Franz) Woyzeck, is placed. This character – one with an extraordinarily complex interior life – is a reflection of the conflict between rationality and its lack, a personification of the dispute as to what normality might be. The plot, telling the tale of one Wojzeck who, betrayed by his girlfriend, progresses towards his murdering of her, becomes a pretext for the exposition of this conflict.
What is most essential in this production though, takes places within the protagonists and particularly within those bearing the brunt of the revolt and the choices which are represented by specific characters in the play. Within the lost, ‘irrational’, schizophrenic Franek are concentrated both the real world and that which turns out to be (despite the attributes of sanctity which are to be found in reality) unadaptably ideal. It is that dichotomy which leads to Woyzeck’s tragedy – and again it is a tragedy of duality – a tragedy of life (he murders the person whom he loves) and of essential ideology (murder, as such, is evil).
The consequence here is in the questions which arise; in a contemporary, brutal, din-filled world, is there a place for a system of values which would enable the ordinary to survive rather than escape into the realms of schizophrenia and delusion. And do not all of us, in not wanting to become one of the play’s protagonists – the ‘heavy’ – the ‘main man’, the faithless girl or the foolish scapegrace, do we not all become a part of Woyzeck?

Kolejny numer pisma poświęcony jest starotestamentowej słowiańskiej tradycji apokryficznej: problemowi coraz częściej ostatnio podejmowanemu, o czym świadczyć mogą choćby licznie powstające w minionym dziesięcioleciu przekłady utworów pseudokanonicznych na współczesne języki słowiańskie (bułgarski, rosyjski, serbski, polski). Literaturze o charakterze popularyzatorskim towarzyszy zainteresowanie ze strony badaczy – filologów, literaturoznawców, tekstologów, kulturoznawców, a także historyków sztuki oraz folklorystów, poszukujących m.in. śladów oddziaływania literackich tekstów pseudokanonicznych na inne kody kulturowe. Jest to relacja dwukierunkowa – często w utworach pseudokanonicznych obserwuje się wpływy mitologii i folkloru Słowian. W niniejszym zeszycie przedstawiamy trzynaście studiów poświęconych słowiańskiemu dziedzictwu starotestamentowej tradycji pseudokanonicznej. Z jednej strony naśladuje ona wzorce bizantyńskie, z drugiej zaś tworzy – na bazie wspólnego dla chrześcijaństwa wschodniego korpusu literatury pseudokanonicznej – utwory oryginalne.
Artykuł A. Miltenovej Reception of parabiblical (paratextual) literature in Medieval Bulgaria (10th–14th cc.) jest próbą nowej periodyzacji powstawania i rozprzestrzeniania się tekstów pseudokanonicznych w średniowiecznej Bułgarii. Na przykładzie historii i zmian zachodzących podczas redagowania wybranych cykli starotestamentowych: o stworzeniu świata (w połączeniu z historią Drzewa Krzyżowego), o Abrahamie oraz Dawidzie i Salomonie Autorka określa cztery okresy recepcji pseudokanonicznego dziedzictwa bizantyńskiego w Bułgarii (przełom X i XI w., XI-XII w., lata Drugiego Carstwa oraz panowania ottomańskiego).
W studium M. Rozhdestvenskiej Ветхозаветные сюжеты в вопросо-ответной славяно-русской спокрифической литературе (Беседа трех святителей, Сказание о 12 пятницах, Cлово на воскресение Лазаря) zwrócono uwagę na charakterystyczną funkcję literatury typu pytania – odpowiedzi: oswojenie podstawowych prawd wiary chrześcijańskiej nad pogaństwem oraz jej zwycięstwo nad siłami zła.
W artykule J. Reinharta A Croatian glagolitic excerpt of the Slavonic Enoch (2 Enoch) prześledzono tradycje apokryficzne chorwackiego piśmiennictwa głagolickiego ze zwróceniem szczególnej uwagi na zależność jedynego chorwackiego fragmentu Słowiańskiej księgi Henocha od pełnego tekstu. Uwzględniono również kontekst wschodnio- i południowosłowiański Historii Melchizedeka. Aneks artykułu stanowi łacińska transliteracja głagolickiej Historii Melchizedeka (wraz z przekładem angielskim), Słowa o Kainie i Ablu oraz Słowa o Dawidzie i Goliacie.
Tekst E. Siatkowskiej Apokryf o Asseneth w literaturze staroczeskiej i staropolskiej w nawiązaniu do literatury pięknej składa się z dwóch części. Na podstawie wnikliwej analizy porównawczej tekstu staroczeskiego i staropolskiego Słowa o Józefie i Asenet oraz ich relacji do greckich i łacińskich źródeł Autorka ocenia miejsce utworu czeskiego jako ogniwa pośredniego między wariantem greckim a znacznie krótszym polskim. Część drugą stanowi porównanie należących do sfery sacrum apokryfów o Józefie i Asenet z fikcją literacką powieści Józef i jego bracia Tomasza Manna.
W artykule Kilka uwag na temat ideologiczno-eschatologicznej wymowy „Bułgarskiej kroniki apokryficznej” K. Marinow dokonuje szczegółowej analizy zabytku powstałego w Bułgarii zapewne w okresie panowania bizantyńskiego. Na uwagę zasługuje stwierdzenie Autora, iż dzieło to nawiązuje nie tylko do innych utworów pseudokanonicznych, ale również do biblijnych ksiąg prorockich i apokaliptycznych, np. Księgi Izajasza, Apokalipsy św. Jana.
Na przykładzie XVII-wiecznych homiliarzy wschodniosłowiańskich M. Kuczyńska w artykule Motywy i funkcje apokryfów quasi-kanonicznych zwraca uwagę na często pomijany w badaniach nad literaturą pseudokanoniczną fenomen relacji między rękopisem i starodrukiem (nierzadko kontynuującym tradycję rękopiśmienną) oraz wkomponowanie apokryfów w strukturę ksiąg kanonicznych.
W artykule Apokryfy starotestamentowe w zbiorach rękopisów cyrylickich Biblioteki XX. Czartoryskich w Krakowie J. Stradomski analizuje treść XVIII-wiecznego cyrylickiego rękopisu sygn. 2401 I, zawierającego m.in. odpisy starotestamentowych utworów pseudokanonicznych: Żywotu Józefa nadobnego, Słowa o proroku Dawidzie, Słowa o Salomonie i jego żonie.
W artykule G. Minczewa i M. Skowronek Projekt elektronicznej bazy danych słowiańskich apokryfów starotestamentowych przedstawiono rezultaty wstępnych ustaleń i prac nad zdigitalizowanym korpusem słowiańskich utworów pseudokanonicznych. Projektowany katalog gromadzić będzie informacje nt. ich form i rozpowszechnienia, a także dane dotyczące wydań tekstów, bibliografii, paraleli z tradycją grecką, łacińską i hebrajską.
Artykuł I. Petrova Избранные проблемы исследования системы глагольных времен в средневековых апокрифических текстах dotyczy badań składniowych nad rozwojem systemu gramatycznego języka bułgarskiego na bazie tzw. kodeksów o treści mieszanej, zawierających m.in. teksty apokryficzne. W opracowaniu sygnalizowany jest zakres problemów badawczych, dotyczących wybranych kategorii semantycznych i ich realizacji w historii języka bułgarskiego, prezentowana jest baza materiałowa (uzasadnienie selekcji tekstów źródłowych) oraz formułowane są podstawowe zasady pracy z tekstami w oparciu o program komputerowy, zawierający wyszukiwarkę oraz stwarzający możliwość systematyzacji przykładów (wyekscerpowanych zdań) według określonych kryteriów semantycznych i formalnych.
Na podstawie tekstów etnograficznych zebranych podczas badań terenowych na katolicko-prawosławnym pograniczu Litwy, Białorusi i Ukrainy M. Zowczak w tekście Dwa Przymierza w religijności ludowej: kontaminacje rekonstruuje mechanizmy ludowej interpretacji Pisma św., która miesza wydarzenia i postacie obu Testamentów.
M. Lubańska w tekście Muzułmańska narracja o Adamie i Hawwie i jej rola w wartościowaniu religii własnej i cudzej interpretuje przekazy ustne zapisane podczas badań terenowych prowadzonych w latach 2002-2005 w Rodopach (Bułgaria) w miejscowościach zasiedlonych przez ludność muzułmańską i prawosławną. Analizie poddano przekazy o grzechu pierworodnym oraz dziejach Adama i Ewy (Hawwy), które, wykorzystując opozycję swój – obcy, wartościują własne i cudze praktyki religijne.
W artykule Specyfika ikonografii wybranych scen starotestamentowych Kroniki Manassesa (Cod. Vat. Sl. 2) I. Gergova poszukuje paraleli miniatur grzechu pierworodnego oraz potopu ze średniobułgarskiego rękopisu ze wzorcami bizantyńskimi, zachodnimi i słowiańskimi, często wykraczającymi poza kanon i inspirowanymi utworami pseudokanonicznymi.
W tekście Extra-biblical sources for the iconography of the prophet Moses in Byzantine and post-Byzantine painting M. Kuyumdzhieva bada relacje między pseudokanonicznymi utworami zawierającymi historię proroka Mojżesza z ich realizacjami ikonograficznymi w sztuce bizantyńskiej i post-bizantyńskiej. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na silne oddziaływanie tekstu Palei historycznej na powstanie i rozwój ikonograficznego cyklu Mojżesza. | Translation - English
ABSTRACT
The latest edition of the publication is devoted to the Apocrypha of the Old Testament in the Slavonic tradition. This is a theme which has been more and more frequently engaged with of late, as is witnessed by the significant number of translations of the pseudo-canonical books which have emerged within the last ten years in contemporary Slavonic languages (Bulgarian, Russian, Serbian and Polish). Literature of a popular nature has accompanied interest on the part of researchers; philologists, specialists in the fields of literature and culture, and textuaries as well as art historians and folklorists searching, amongst other things, for traces of the impact of the literary pseudo-canonical texts on other cultural codes. This is a two-way relationship; often the influence of Slavonic mythology and folklore can be observed in the pseudo-canonical works. In the following booklet, we present thirteen studies devoted to the Slavonic heritage of the Old Testament pseudo-canonical tradition. On the one hand, this follows the Byzantine pattern, whilst on the other, it creates original works on the basis of a common corpus of Eastern Christian pseudo-canonical literature.
A. Miltenovej’s article, "Reception of parabiblical (paratextual) literature in Medieval Bulgaria (10th – 14th cc.)", is a new attempt at the periodisation of the emergence and spread of the pseudo-canonical texts in medieval Bulgaria. Using examples of history and the changes encroaching during the editing of selected cycles from the Old Testament, those of the Creation (in conjunction with the story of the Tree of the Cross), of Abraham and of David and Solomon, the author determines four periods for the reception of the Byzantine pseudo-canonical heritage in Bulgaria (the turn of the X and XI centuries, the XI – XII century, the years of the Second Kingdom and the Ottoman rule).
In M. Rozhdestvenskiej’s study, "Ветхозаветные сюжеты в вопросо-ответной славяно-русской спокрифической литературе (Беседа трех святителей, Сказание о 12 пятницах, Cлово на воскресение Лазаря)", attention is focused on a function typical of literature, that of question and answer; the adaptation of the fundamental truths of Christianity to paganism as well as its victory over the powers of evil.
In J. Reinhart’s article, "A Croatian glagolitic excerpt of the Slavonic Enoch (2 Enoch)", the apocryphal tradition in Croatian Glagolitic writing is pursued, with particular attention being paid to the relationship of one excerpt of the Croatian "Slavonic Book of Enoch" to the entire text. The context of the eastern and southern Slavonic "Story of Melchizedek" is also considered. The Latin transliteration of the Glagolitic "Story of Melchidezek" (together with an English translation), "Words on Cain and Abel" and "Words on David and Goliath" form the appendix to the article.
E. Siatkowski’s text, "The Asenath Apocrypha in Old Czech and Old Polish literature, with reference to fine literature", consists of two parts. On the basis of a thorough analytical comparison of the Old Polish and Old Czech "Words on Joseph and Asenath", as well as their relationship to the Greek and Latin sources, the author evaluates the place of the Czech work as a link between the Greek variant and the markedly shorter Polish one. The second part is a comparison belonging to the sphere of apocryphal sacrum about Joseph and Asenath in Thomas Mann’s fictional literary tale, "Joseph and his Brothers".
In his article, "Some comments on the theme of ideological/eschatological meanings in 'The Bulgarian Apocryphal Chronicle' ", K. Marinow carries out a detailed analysis of an extant text which probably emerged in Bulgaria during the period of Byzantine rule. Worthy of note is the author’s statement that this work is related not only to other pseudo-canonical writings, but also to the biblical books of the prophets, for example the Book of Isaiah and the Apocalypse of St. John.
Using examples of XVII-century eastern Slavonic homilies, in her article, "Motifs and functions of the quasi-canonical Aprocrypha", M. Kuczyńska draws attention to a phenomenon often passed over in research into pseudo-canonical literature; that of the relationship between manuscript and old print (not infrequently a continuation of the manuscript tradition), as well as the integration of the Apocrypha into the structure of the canonical books.
In his article, "Old Testament Apocrypha in the Cyrillic manuscript collection of the Czartorski Family Ducal Library in Krakow", J. Stradomski analyses the contents of the XVIII-century Cyrillic manuscript, catalogue number 2401 1, containing, amongst others, descriptions of the Old Testament pseudo-canonical works 'The life of Joseph the All-Comely', 'Words on the Prophet David" and "Words on Solomon and his Wife".
In the article by G. Minczewa and M. Slowronek, "A project for an electronic data base of Slavonic Old Testament Apocrypha", the results of the initial setting-up and work on a digitalised corpus of Slovenian pseudo-canonical works are presented. The projected catalogue will gather information on their form and dissemination as well as the data dealing with the publication of the texts, bibliographies and parallels with the Greek, Latin and Hebrew traditions.
I. Petrova’s article, "Избранные проблемы исследования системы глагольных времен в средневековых апокрифических текстах", covers a syntactical examination of the development of the Bulgarian language’s grammar system, based on the so-called mixed content rule and comprising, amongst others, apocryphal texts. Within the study, the scope of the research themes, dealing with selected semantic categories and their accomplishment in the history of the Bulgarian language, is indicated and the materials base is presented (a justification of the selection of source texts), as are the fundamental rules for work with texts which is supported by a computer programme, including a search engine and creating the possibility of systematic examples (excerpted sentences) in accordance with the determined semantic and formal criteria.
On the basis of ethnographic texts collected during research in situ on the Catholic/Orthodox borderlands of Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine, in "Two Covenants in folk religiousness: contamination", M. Zowak reconstructs the mechanisms of folk interpretations of the Holy Scriptures, which mix the events and characters of both Testaments.
In her text, "The Muslim narrative of Adam and Hava and its role in evaluating one’s own and outsiders’ religion", M. Lubańska interprets the material passed on to her orally during in situ research carried out during the years 2002 – 2005 in Rodopi (Bulgaria), in places settled by Muslim and Orthodox populations. She analyses the given oral materials about original sin and the deeds of Adam and Eve (Hava), which, by employing the opposites of mine – others, evaluate personal religious practices and those of outsiders.
In her article, "The iconographic specifics of selected scenes from the Old Testament Manasses Chronicle (Cod. Vat. Sl. 2)", I. Gergova searches for parallel miniatures of Original Sin and the Flood in Middle Bulgarian manuscripts of Byzantine, western and Slavonic patterns, often going beyond the canons and inspired by pseudo-canonical works.
In her text, Extra-biblical sources for the iconography of the prophet Moses in Byzantine and post-Byzantine painting, M. Kuyumdzhieva examines the relationship between the pseudo-canonical works containing the story of the prophet Moses and their iconographic realization in Byzantine and post-Byzantine art.
