Globalization/Anti-Globalization
MAKING SENSE OF GLOBALIZATION
Globalization, simply put, denotes the expanding scale, growing magnitude, speeding up and deepening impact of transcontinental flows and patterns of social interaction. It refers to a shift or transformation in the scale of human organization that links distant communities and expands the reach of power relations across the world's regions and continents. But it should not be read as prefiguring the emergence of a harmonious world society or as a universal process of global integration in which there is a growing convergence of cultures and civilizations. For not only does the awareness of growing interconnectedness create new animosities and conflicts, it can fuel reactionary politics and deepseated xenophobia. Since a substantial proportion of the world's population is largely excluded from the benefits of globalization, it is a deeply divisive and, consequently, vigorously contested process. The unevenness of globalization ensures it is far from a universal process experienced uniformly across the entire planet.
Although the term globalization has acquired the status of a popular cliche, the concept itself is not new. Its origins lie in the work of many nineteenth- and early twentieth-century intellectuals, from Karl Marx and sociologists such as Saint-Simon to students of geopolitics such as MacKinder, who recognized how modernity was integrating the world. But it was not until the 1960s and early 1970s that the term 'globalization' acquired academic and wider currency.

MEMBUAT GLOBALISASI MASUK AKAL
| | Indonesian to English: PENDIDIKAN MASYARAKAT | Source text - Indonesian PARTISIPASI KELUARGA DAN MASYARAKAT DI INDONESIA
| Translation - English FAMILY AND COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IN INDONESIA
In the last two decades, there grows in Indonesia a new and uniquely characterized community: educated, enthusiastic, and willing to spare time to accompany their children to schools bringing a message of ‘what can I do to help develop the school,’ and to discuss intensely their children development with other parents; even to go as far as helping formulate recommendations for their children’s schools.
This trend developing in the society along with increase in family awareness of education becomes significant when school-based education management is introduced. Founding of school committee as one important component in implementation of school-based education management has allowed all stakeholders of the school to work together towards improvements of education for all of its attendees. It is thought that the board will reinforce autonomy of state-owned as well as private education institutions.
Education outside formal schooling, especially communal education, has been flourished by public participation. The same thing happens at private schools. Supports by the Government for this kind of community-based education are still rare. Qualitywise, however, in terms of accepted success indicators, several private schools and practical skill course providers have produced graduates far more competent than state-owned schools and education institutions.
