All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

Τα ταξίδια δεν είναι πια παρά ένα μέσο μεταφοράς της φωτογραφικής μηχανής από το ένα μέρος στο άλλο κι οι ταξιδιώτες προσκυνούν τον παντοδύναμο φακό. Επισκέπτες, που όπως τον παλιό καιρό, θέλουν απλά να σταθούν και να κοιτάξουν γύρω τους με τα ίδια τους τα μάτια, τρώνε σπρωξιές από τους φωτογράφους, που θεωρούν απολύτως φυσικό να μην κινείται και να μην περνάει τίποτα μπροστά τους, όσο εκείνοι «νετάρουν» τελετουργικά. Όλοι αυτοί οι αλλόκοτοι άνθρωποι χωρίς μηχανή, πρέπει να κάνουν στην άκρη για όσους έχουν σοβαρή δουλειά, πρέπει να είναι υπομονετικοί μέχρι να τελειώσει η ιεροτελεστία και πρέπει να περιμένουν τη σειρά τους όσο έρχονται τα λεωφορεία, το ένα μετά το άλλο, εξαπολύοντας στο περιβάλλον το Θεό-Φακό. Κι οι κάτοικοι ολόκληρων χωρών, που γίνονται βορά των «κανιβάλων» και καταπίνονται σα ρουφηγμένοι από σκούπα ηλεκτρική μέσα στο γουρλωμένο μαυρογυρισμένο μάτι, κοιτούν να βγάλουν ότι μπορούν απ’ τους κανίβαλους. Θες φωτογραφία το σπίτι, την καμήλα μου; Πλήρωσε.
Τίποτε από αυτά δεν θα ‘χε, ίσως, σημασία αν έβγαινε και κάποιο αξιοπρόσεκτο αποτέλεσμα, αν η συνεχής απασχόληση και τα κλικ του κλείστρου έδειχναν, τελικά, κάτι που να μην είχε δει κανείς πιο πριν, εικόνες όμορφες ή απλά αληθινές. Αυτό όμως, δυστυχώς, δεν γίνεται. Η μηχανή, είναι απλά ο τρόπος εξωραϊσμού του γκράφιτι.
Η φωτογραφική μηχανή είναι το μέσο για ν’ αφήσουμε το σημάδι μας σ’ ότι βλέπουμε γύρω μας, με τη δικαιολογία ότι καταγράφουμε τα Θαύματα του Κόσμου, ήδη υπέροχα αποτυπωμένα από επαγγελματίες και διαθέσιμα να τα αγοράσουμε σε οποιοδήποτε βιβλιοπωλείο ή μαγαζί με χαρτικά. Και αξίζει όταν γυρίσουμε στο σπίτι να δείχνουμε στη Θεία Ελένη τις καρτ ποστάλ απ’ το τοπίο της Τοσκάνης αφού εμείς δεν είμαστε στη φωτογραφία για ν’ αποδείξουμε ότι ήμασταν εκεί;
Κανένα πέτρινο τοπίο δεν είναι αληθινό αν δεν είμαι κι εγώ μέσα. Μνημείο δεν υπάρχει αν δεν ακουμπάει επάνω του η γυναίκα μου. Κανένας ναός δεν έχει ενδιαφέρον αν δίπλα του δε βρίσκεται η χαμογελαστή μου φάτσα. Με τη μηχανή μου οικειοποιούμαι οτιδήποτε όμορφο, το κατακτώ, το συρρικνώνω, το κάνω «του σπιτιού» και το αναπαράγω στον άδειο τοίχο του σαλονιού μου, για ν’ αποδείξω σε λίγους, εκλεκτούς φίλους και την οικογένεια, τη μια και μόνη ζωτική πληροφορία για την ομορφιά που αντικρίζουν: τα είδα, ήμουνα εκεί, τα φωτογράφησα, άρα, υπάρχουν.

EQUIPMENT
The press Equipment (AC709) was originally supplied, with:
3 Goss free-standing rollstands and associated Robertson disc brakes, air-shafts and
auto-load assist mechanisms.
Now defined as the ‘Equipment to be returned’.
The ‘Equipment to be returned’ originally supplied by the Seller under contract AC709 is
located in the Buyers facility. It is assumed that the equipment has been suitably stored and
the equipment is complete and to the original specification. In the event the ‘Equipment to be
returned’ is incomplete or no longer to specification, for whatever reason whatsoever, the
Buyer agrees to pay the Seller reasonable documented additional costs to undertake any
corrective action the Sellers deems necessary.

The following ‘Additional Equipment’ is to be supplied :
3 MEGTEC AR35 free standing automatic turret flying splicers. The splicers hold one
and one half reels. The expiring roll is automatically spliced onto the new roll using a

and commissioning of the Equipment by no more than 2 working weeks on the condition

Ο 'Εξοπλισμός προς επιστροφή' που παρασχέθηκε αρχικά βάσει της σύμβασης AC709 βρίσκεται στις εγκαταστάσεις του Αγοραστή. Θεωρείται ότι ο εξοπλισμός έχει αποθηκευτεί με τον κατάλληλο τρόπο και ότι είναι πλήρης και πληροί τις αρχικές προδιαγραφές. Ζητείται να παρασχεθεί ο ακόλουθος 'Πρόσθετος Εξοπλισμός':
3 ελεύθερες συγκολλητικές μηχανές ψεκασμού αυτομάτως περιστρεφόμενου πυργίσκου, MEGTEC AR35. Οι μηχανές παίρνουν ενάμιση ρολό χαρτί. Το ρολό που τελειώνει, αυτομάτως συγκολλείται στο καινούργιο ρολό με το συγκολλητικό μηχανισμό ψεκασμού.
ΥΠΗΡΕΣΙΕΣ
Η παροχή του 'Πρόσθετου Εξοπλισμού' θα επεκτείνει το αρχικό πρόγραμμα εγκατάστασης και θέσης σε λειτουργία του Εξοπλισμού κατά όχι περισσότερο από 2 εργάσιμες εβδομάδες υπό τον όρο ότι η παρούσα σύμβαση θα υπογραφεί έως τις 5 Ιουλίου 2006 το αργότερο και η προκαταβολή θα παραληφθεί εντός 5 ημερών από την υπογραφή του παρόντος Προσαρτήματος της Σύμβασης.
