Choroidal melanomas may produce no symptoms initially if located away from the macula. On the other hand, a tumor that develops next to or in the macula may produce distorted and/or reduced vision. Tumors located away from the macula may produce changes in the visual field as they enlarge, and the patient may complain of a dark area or shadow to one side. In addition, as these tumors enlarge, they may cause changes in the vitreous and produce flashes of light or floaters. Fluid may also leak under the retina from large tumors, and this may cause a retinal detachment, with distorted and/or decreased vision. A person rarely notices increased pigmentation on the sclera, and it is uncommon for someone with a choroidal melanoma to complain of pain unless a complication such as glaucoma has developed. Most choroidal melanomas are therefore discovered by the ophthalmologist on routine examination. | Translation - Spanish
Los melanomas coroidales pueden no producir sintomas inicialmente si están situados lejos de la mácula. Por otro lado, un tumor que se desarrolle al lado de la mácula, o en la misma mácula, puede producir distorsión visual y/o visión reducida. Los tumores localizados lejos de la mácula pueden producir cambios en el campo visual cuando crecen, y el paciente puede quejarse de áreas oscuras o sombras laterales. Además, en su proceso de crecimiento, estos tumores pueden causar cambios en el vítreo y producir destellos o puntos flotantes. Los tumores grandes pueden tambien producir derrames de líquido bajo la retina, y esto puede causar un deprendimiento de retina, con distorsión y/o disminución visual. Es raro que una persona note un aumento de la pigmentación en la esclerótica, y es poco usual que alguien con un melanoma coroidal se queje de dolor, a menos que se desarrolle una complicación como el glaucoma.
