Descripción
Bajo la mirada de los volcanes Iztaccihuatl ("La Mujer Blanca") y Popocatépetl ("La montaña que humea"), este poblado fue en la época indígena un centro ceremonial dedicado al culto de las montañas. De hecho Amecameca significa “que tiene vestido de amate” pues con este papel se engalanaban las imágenes que se ofrendaban a los dioses.
Al llegar al poblado se vive el bullicio de los comercios, hostales, fondas y restaurantes para turistas. Uno de los atractivos es el tianguis del día domingo, donde los visitantes pueden encontrar infinidad de artesanías provenientes de toda la región. En el centro, a un lado de la plaza principal, se encuentra la parroquia y el ex convento de la Asunción, construidos en el siglo XVI por frailes franciscanos y dominicos; a poca distancia de la plaza principal está el antiguo Santuario del Sacromonte.
Durante la Feria de la Nuez el poblado se llena de innumerables puestos de comida, dulces y licores hechos con nuez; se instalan juegos mecánicos y las calles se adornan con papeles de colores.
En los suburbios de Amecameca se encuentra la Hacienda de Panohaya, sitio histórico porque allí llegó a vivir a la edad de tres años la niña Juana Ramírez de Asbaje, posteriormente conocida como Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.
De todas partes de México y del mundo llegan al Parque Nacional Iztaccíhuatl y Popocatépetl visitantes atraídos por la grandiosidad del paisaje y la majestuosidad de los dos colosos nevados, así como innumerables vulcanólogos que estudian la actividad del Popocatépetl.
Atractivos
El principal atractivo es el Parque Nacional Iztaccíhuatl-Popocatépetl, reserva natural de 25 679 hectáreas centrada en los dos volcanes que rebasan los 5,200 metros de altura sobre el nivel del mar. El Parque cuenta con innumerables cañadas, bosques alpinos y senderos por donde los alpinistas gustan pasar en su ruta hacia las cimas nevadas.
El centro de Amecameca ha sido un punto de comercio importantísimo en la región desde la época prehispánica hasta la época de la Colonia. Hoy existen muchos comercios, hoteles, posadas y el famosos tianguis de los días domingos. La plaza principal se engalana con la suntuosa Parroquia de la Asunción que sobresale por su decorado en blanco y terracota. Este templo, junto con el ex convento vecino cuyo claustro manifiesta la influencia de las construcciones medievales, fue construido en el siglo XVI por frailes franciscanos y dominicos.
Casi en el centro de Amecameca, en las inmediaciones de la cima del cerro llamado Sacromonte, existe una cueva donde se le solía rendir culto en la época prehispánica al dios Tezcatlipoca. En el siglo XVI, los frailes franciscanos encabezados por Fray Martín de Valencia colocaron en ese lugar la escultura de un Cristo negro en forma yaciente y empezaron a construir una ermita que actualmente alberga a la figura del Señor del Sacromonte, que ha sido considerado "muy milagroso" hasta el día de hoy. El Viernes Santo, se lleva a cabo por la noche una vistosa procesión en donde todo el pueblo participa portando cirios encendidos y llevando al Cristo antiquísimo por todo el pueblo.
¿Y qué decir de la Feria de la Nuez de Castilla que se celebra entre los meses de julio o agosto con sus muchos puestos coloridos que ofrecen verdaderos manjares culinarios, dulces, repostería y licores de nuez en un agradable ambiente de fiesta provinciana?
Historia
Se dice que los primeros pobladores de la región que hoy ocupan los municipios de Chalco y Amecameca eran toltecas. En el año de 1268 llegaron los chichimecas y para 1465 los mexicas que impusieron un tributo a los habitantes.
Tras la conquista de los españoles, Amecameca fue evangelizada por los franciscanos. Para el siglo XVIII, se transformó en un importante paso caminero en donde misioneros, comerciantes y viajeros se detenían antes de llegar a la Ciudad de México, por lo que se multiplicaron las posadas y los comercios.
En 1861 se le otorgó el título de Villa.

Description
This town was, in the native period, a ceremonial center dedicated to the worshipping of mountains, under the constant watch of the Iztaccihuatl ("The white Lady") and the Popocatépetl volcanoes ("The Mountain that gives off smoke"). Amecameca means “dressed with amate”, because the pre-Hispanic inhabitants decorated the images they offered to the gods with this traditional handcrafted paper.
When you arrive in town, you can hear the humming of commerce, hostels and restaurants for tourists. One of the main attractions is the Sunday tianguis, where visitors can find countless crafts from the whole region. Downtown, next to the main square, you can see the parish church and the ex-convent of Asunción, which were built in the sixteenth century by Franciscan and Dominican friars. Nearby is the old Sanctuary of Sacromonte.
During the Walnut Fair, innumerable stands selling food, sweets, and walnut liquors appear. Mechanical games are installed and the streets are decorated with colored papers.
The Panohaya Country Estate is located in the suburbs of Amecameca. It was declared a historical site because of the child Juana Ramírez de Asbaje who went to live there at the age of three. She was later known as Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.
Visitors come from all parts of Mexico and the rest of the world to the Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl National Park. Visitors are attracted by the immensity of the landscape and the two snowed peaks. Experts in volcanoes study the Popocatépetl volcano’s activity.
Attractions
The main attraction is the Iztaccíhuatl-Popocatépetl National Park, a natural reserve with an extension of 25 679 hectares, around the two volcanoes that surpass 5,200 meters above sea level. The park has innumerable ravines, alpine forests, and paths where mountaineers can walk, on their way to the snowed peaks.
Amecameca has been an important area of commerce in the region from pre-Hispanic to colonial times. Today, there are several shops, hotels, inns, and the famous Sunday tianguis. The principal square is decorated by the lavish Asunción parish church that stands out by its white and terracotta decorations. This temple and the neighboring convent, whose cloister reveals a medieval influence, were built in the sixteenth century by Franciscan and Dominican friars.
Almost in the center of Amecameca, near the top of the Sacromonte hill, there is a cave where the God Tezcatlipoca was worshipped in pre-Hispanic times. In the sixteenth century, the Franciscan friars led by Martín de Valencia put a sculpture of a black Christ there, and began to build a hermitage that currently accommodates the figure of the Lord of the Sacromonte, that has been considered to be miraculous until today. On Holy Friday, at night, there is a flashy procession where the whole town participates, carrying lit candles and the old Christ through the whole town.
It is also worth mentioning the Nut Fair, celebrated between the months of July and August, with colorful stands that offer delicacies, sweets, pastries and nut liquors in a provincial festive atmosphere.
History
The first inhabitants of the region that today occupy the towns of Chalco and Amecameca were the Toltecas. In 1268 the Chichimecas arrived and in 1465 the Mexicas established a tax for the inhabitants.
After the Spanish conquest, the Amecameca inhabitants were evangelized by the Franciscans. In the eighteenth century it became an important place, where missionaries, tradesmen, and travelers stopped before arriving to the city of Mexico, which is why inns and shops multiplied.
In 1861, it was given the title of Villa.
