FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to surface-crosslinked superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) and to an improved method of manufacturing the SAPs. More particularly, the present invention relates to the incorporation of a clay into the SAP particles during a surface crosslinking step. The resulting surface crosslinked SAP particles exhibit excellent fluid absorption and retention properties, especially with respect to permeability of a fluid through a bed of the surface crosslinked SAP particles. The incorporation of a clay also provides a more facile and economical method of preparing SAP particles.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Water-absorbing resins are widely used in sanitary and hygienic goods, wiping cloths, water-retaining agents, dehydrating agents, sludge coagulants, disposable towels and bath mats, thickening agents, disposable litter mats for pets, condensation preventing agents, and release control agents for various chemicals. Water-absorbing resins are available in a variety of chemical forms, including substituted and unsubstituted natural and synthetic polymers, such as hydrolysis products of starch acrylonitrile graft polymers, carboxymethylcellulose, crosslinked polyacrylates, crosslinked and partially neutralized copolymers of isobutylene and maleic anhydride, saponification products of vinyl acetate-acrylic acid polymer, sulfonated polystyrenes, hydrolyzed polyacrylamides, polyvinyl alcohols, polyethylene oxides, polyvinylpyrrolidones, and polyacrylonitriles. | Translation - French
