2003 COMPARED WITH 2002 CONSOLIDATED RESULTS
Worldwide net income in 2003 was $238 million, or $1.92 per share diluted, compared with $118 million, or $0.95 per share diluted, in 2002. Better market conditions contributed to the stronger performance of the company’s construction and mining segments. In addition, as a result of rigorous asset management, trade receivables reached their lowest level in more than five years. Net sales revenues increased 15 percent to $11,471 million in 2003, compared with $9,105 million in 2002. Net sales of the construction operations increased 18 percent in 2003 to $9,584 million from $8,122 million last year. The increase was in part due to the improved price realization and translation effect of strong foreign currency exchange rates.
Worldwide commercial operations had an operating profit of $810 million in 2003, compared with $612 million in 2002. Operating profit increased mostly due to a higher volume of sales. Last year’s results were adversely affected by the higher costs associated with the company’s minority investments in Shaftoe Systems, Inc. and Shaftoe Investments, Inc. (collectively called Shaftoe), ventures involved in the development of several extensive distribution networks. In 2003 the company acquired a majority interest in Shaftoe Systems, Inc. which was consolidated.
