The commercial broiler of today has the genetic potential to grow very rapidly. An increase in body weight by four-fold during the first week of life is considered the norm, and body weights of 2,300+ grams at 42 days of age are common. This tremendous growth potential has resulted from intensive genetic selection. However, this increase in muscle mass has not occurred proportionately with increases in other body systems. Thus, the bird of today has the potential to grow more rapidly, but is more fragile. For example, the heart and lungs are a lower percent of body weight than in chickens of 5 and 10 years ago. For this reason, birds are much more susceptible to stressors that affect the respiratory and/or circulatory systems. Mortality resulting from ascites, heart attack, heat stress, and respiratory complications are costly to the poultry industry (Figures 1, 2 and 3). Twenty years ago, these diseases were of much less significance, as birds were more resistant. The respiratory system must function properly and cannot be compromised in any way if maximum performance is to be realized.
| More Less | | Other - Eng>Spa Translation Diploma (Universidad Iberoamericana) | | Years of translation experience: 20.
