Se refería al famoso compañero de Reyes Thierry Henry; ambos en el Arsenal londinense, y yo creo que cualquier español conocedor de las hablas coloquiales que la gente emplea aquí muy a menudo, supo, desde el momento en que trascendió el comentario, que en la frase de Aragonés no había -o no por fuerza, desde luego- racismo alguno, y que lo mismo podía haberse referido a Van Nistelrooy como a "ese holandés de mierda", a Shevchenko o a Kahn como a "ese rubio de mierda", o a Adriano o Kaká como a "ese brasileño de mierda". Translation - English Refering to Arsenal’s French player Therry Henry, Spanish national soccer coach Luis Aragonés made following remark in trying to motivate Henry's fellow Arsenal striker José Antonio Reyes: “Tell this negro de mierda [black shit] that you’re better than him.” According to Spanish novelist Javier Marías, every Spanish speaking person understood from the moment the commentary became known that the sentence didn’t had, or at least wasn’t meant to have, anything to do with racism. Aragonés could have used in the same way phrases like holandés de mierda [Dutch shit] refering to Manchester United player Ruud Van Nistelrooy, or rubio de mierda [blond shit] refering to Inter Milan’s Ukrainian striker Shevchenko or Germany’s famous goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. As well as brasileño de mierda [Brazilian shit] refering to Shevchenko’s teammate Adriano or AC Milan’s midfielder Kaká. It’s therefore just a (rude) way of colloquialism and should not be translated literary. Further Marías states that the sentence from Aragonés has to be treated just as other expressions in an affectionate tone of admirative jealousy. Nobody would have any doubts about the intention of statements such as: “You lucky bastard!” or “Damn good play, asswhole!”. They are sentences which don’t contain any insult at all, even though their first appearance might lead to such misunderstanding. Within the same range belongs the remark ‘negro de mierda’, as Marías says with a affectionate tone of admirative jealousy, and the correct translation of the meaning of the words from Aragonés should be as follows: “Show this negro everyone praises (and I’m really sick of all this bloody worship although he truly deserves it) that you are even better than he is.” Without any doubt the expression ‘de mierda’ included honest admiration, despite some jealousy, of Aragonés for Henry. Javier Marías finally affirms that in general a common way of praising someone is actually by thinking or saying something like: “Look at this bloody bastard! What a good shot or how well does he write or how wonderful does he play the piano!”
