Oh! Santo Deus poderoso
que tudo cria e ordena
dai-me luz e pensamento
caderno, tinteiro e pena
para eu narrar em verso
a mais temerosa cena
Nestes versos eu descrevo
tragédia, briga e rancor
vingança, tristeza e odio,
coragem, força e valor,
bravura, honra e critério,
paixão, firmeza e amor.
Nas margens do Potengi
havia um fazendeiro
que era capitalista
protetor de cangaceiro,
ruim, valente e perverso
vingativo e desordeiro
Se chamava este homem
José Duque Militão
tinha um cargo elevado,
patente de capitão
era o maior que havia
em riqueza e posição
