Winters used to be cold in England. We, my parents especially, spent them watching the wrestling. The wrestling they watched on their black-and-white television sets on Saturday afternoons represented a brief intrusion of life and colour in their otherwise monochrome lives. Their work overalls were faded, the sofa cover—unchanged for years—was faded, their memories of the people they had been before coming to England were fading too. My parents, their whole generation, treadmilled away the best years of their lives toiling in factories for shoddy paypackets. A life of drudgery, of deformed spines, of chronic arthritis, of severed hands. They bit their lips and put up with the pain. They had no option but to. In their minds they tried to switch off—to ignore the slights of co-workers, not to bridle against the glib cackling of foremen, and, in the case of Indian women, not to fret when they were slapped about by their husbands. Put up with the pain, they told themselves, deal with the pain—the shooting pains up the arms, the corroded hip joints, the back seizures from leaning over sewing machines for too many years, the callused knuckles from handwashing clothes, the rheumy knees from scrubbing the kitchen floor with their husbands' used underpants.

When my parents sat down to watch the wrestling on Saturday afternoons, milky cardamon tea in hand, they wanted to be entertained, they wanted a laugh. But they also wanted the good guy, just for once, to triumph over the bad guy. They wanted the swaggering, braying bully to get his come-uppance. They prayed for the nice guy, lying there on the canvas, trapped in a double-finger interlock or clutching his kidneys in agony, not to submit. If only he could hold out just a bit longer, bear the pain, last the course. If only he did these things, chances were, wrestling being what it was, that he would triumph. It was only a qualified victory, however. You'd see the winner, exhausted, barely able to wave to the crowd. The triumph was mainly one of survival.

For too long, American Presidents have had a bad tendency to personalize overseas problems, often with ill effect. By authorizing a U.S. Ranger manhunt for Somali warlord Mohammed Farrah Aidid, Bill Clinton is making the same mistake.

John Kennedy was so frustrated by the inability of President Ngo Dinh Diem to deal with a growing communist threat to South Vietnam that he endorsed Diem’s overthrow. Diem was murdered - three weeks later, so was Kennedy - and America’s role in Vietnam spun out of control.

Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter clung so tightly to the Shah of Iran and so demonized Ayatullah Khomeni that Washington is still confounded by Islamic fundamentalism. George Bush imagined Panama’s problems would be cured if the U. S. could eliminate Manuel Noriega. They weren’t - not even after Bush got lucky and nabbed the dictator in late 1989. Two years later, he called Saddam Hussein Hitler, but by then knew better than to make his ouster a condition for ending the Gulf War.

Clinton has fallen into the same trap of substituting a target for a policy. Last week’s predawn helicopter raid on a south Mogadishu complex by 50 Rangers was more Inspector Clouseau farce than show of force. This gang that couldn’t shoot straight crashed into the plainly marked offices of the United Nations Development Progam and seized nine terrified U.N. aides, all Caucasians and unlikely candidates for Aidid henchmen. A Ranger colonel apologized, but U.N. military spokesman Major David Stockwell called the raid `a textbook example of how these operations should go.´ Stockwell must be a big Pink Panther fan.

The problem of being awkward with introductions is not, for many, an “unusual situation.” You may find that you are often uncertain about whether to introduce someone using their first name, last name, or both; about whether to use a qualifier (“this is my friend, ______”); even about whether or not it is in fact your responsibility to introduce two people in a given situation. But all of this is small potatoes compared with the seemingly inevitable mingling nightmare of having to introduce someone whose name you have forgotten.

It’s one thing to forget someone’s name if you’ve met them only once or twice, or if you haven’t seen them in a while. But all too often it’s someone whose name you really should know, and who is going to be insulted to find out you don’t. In other words, a faux pas in the making.

This is absolute agony when it happens, and I’ve watched hundreds of minglers try to deal with different ways, ranging from exuberant apology (“Oh GOD, I’m so sorry, JEEZ, wow, I can’t believe I’ve forgotten your name!”) to throwing up their hands and walking away. But there are better ways to deal with this kind of mental slip. Next time you draw a blank while making introductions, try the following ploy:

Force them to introduce themselves. This is the smoothest and most effective way to handle your memory lapse. When it’s done well, no one will ever suspect you. If you have forgotten one person’s name in the group, turn to that person first and smile. Then turn invitingly to a person whose name you do remember and say, “This is Linden Bond,” turning back casually toward the forgotten person. The person whose name you haven’t mentioned yet will automatically (it’s a reflex) say “Nice to meet you, Linden, I’m Sylvia Cooper,” and usually offer a hand to shake.

La archirrepetida afirmación de Valle-Inclán, justificando su esperpento, de que sólo una estética sistemáticamente deformada puede dar fe del sentido trágico de la vida española, ha sido una de las posiciones más controvertidas en la moderna literatura española. Es altamente revelador ese desprecio suficiente con que suele mirarse todo intento de representación artística que no se acomode a los cánones o fórmulas establecidos: y es claramente sospechosa la pretendida seriedad en nombre de la cual se suele menospreciar habitualmente todo arte o literatura que vulnere aquella imagen dada, a través de la deformación humorística. Sospechosa por cuanto deja inmediatamente al descubierto un sentimiento de autodefensa, crea una barrera que impide la penetración en los márgenes de lo sabido, y pretende hacer imposible cualquier análisis crítico. Dígase lo que se diga, e incluso reconociendo que el humor (sobre todo en el teatro) ha sido una suerte de coartada por medio de la cual el "stablishment" (sic) ha pretendido lavar su mala conciencia, la literatura y el teatro de humor no han sido entendidos en nuestro país por el público al que presuntamente se dirigían. La seriedad ha podido siempre más, y la graveza trágica ha alzado siempre su triste imagen para recordarnos una trascendencia, a medias penosa, a medias castradora.

THE OFT-REPEATED AFFIRMATION OF VALLE-INCLÁN

Valle-Inclán´s oft-repeated statement justifying his "esperpento" -an almost caricaturesque writing style- has been one of the most controversial positions in modern Spanish literature. By means of the "esperpento", Valle-Inclán states that only a systematically deformed aesthetic can attest to the tragic sense of the Spanish life. It is very revealing that any attempt of artistic representation which does not fit the established norms or formulas is viewed with enough contempt; and it is highly suspicious that all art or literature that interferes with that given image (by means of humorous deformation) is consistently demeaned in the name of feigned seriousness. It is suspicious because it exposes a sentiment of self-defense, it builds a barrier that blocks access into the margins of what is known, and it prevents any critical analysis. Regardless of what might be said, even recognizing that humour -especially in theatre- has been sort of an alibi by means of which the "stablishment" [sic] has tried to wash its guilty conscience, humorous literature and the theatre have not been understood in our country by their supposedly intended audience. Seriousness won every time, and tragic solemnity has raised its sad image to remind us of a half painful, half castrating transcendence.

Por eso, al margen de todos los artículos y conmemoraciones que recuerdan el centenario de su nacimiento sería conveniente analizar las razones por las que este hombre, después de haber sido un niño retrasado para hablar, un estudiante mediocre rechazado por la Escuela Politécnica y suspendido en el doctorado en 1905, se convirtió en el científico más importante y popular (en el sentido en que lo fue también Picasso); en un sabio con aureola de cabellos blancos - conciencia del mundo - que nos presentan sus hagiógrafos; en ese investigador atormentado por las consecuencias de sus descubrimientos, que pasó los últimos años de su vida empeñado en introducir algunas dosis de ética en los trabajos de los laboratorios; en uno de los hombres - concluyo - que rompieron las certidumbres del pasado para que pudiese estallar el siglo XX. About me

My name is Henar Chico, and I am a native Spanish speaker from Bilbao, Spain. I hold a BA in English Philology from the University of Deusto, in Bilbao, as well as a Master in Professional Translation from Estudio Sampere, in Madrid. I am also a Notary Public by the State of Idaho.

I work as a freelance translator for several agencies on a regular basis (Day Translations, Pearl Linguistics or AnyLanguage Network, to mention a few), doing translations, proofreading or editing jobs. I have done a number of jobs for several government offices in Idaho, as well as a few private companies, such as Proclarity (now Microsoft) or Chasewood Wealth Management, for whom I translated their financial website , or Stainless Steel World/Valve World, from the Netherlands. I frequently collaborate with the translation and/or revision of the ETB website (Basque radio and television, in Spain). I also have experience working on assignments that involve translating a questionnaire into Spanish, then carrying out the interview, recording it, and transcribing the answers, which I then translate back to English.

As I look to the future I hope to help businesses communicate with their target audience and feel good about it, knowing that their message is coming across clearly and professionally in Spanish as well as English.

On a lighter note, I'd like to mention a very welcomed second place on the 3rd and 7th Proz.com translation contests (out of 38 and 47 entries respectively), and fourth place (out of 47) on the 6th contest. It is always a wonderful and rewarding experience taking part in these contests.
