A kesernyés aromájú, kiegyensúlyozott ízvilágú, eredetileg gyógyitalnak készült likőr alkalmas az étvágy és az emésztés serkentésére is, így étkezés előtt és után is kedvtelve fogyasztják.
Iható jégbe hűtve, jegeces pohárból, vagy szobahőmérsékleten konyakospohárból, de forrón is: úgy mozgósítja a szervezet tartalék energiáit. Tehát akkor és úgy iható, ahogy és amikor jólesik. Az Unicumnak csak egy titka van: a receptje.
Az italt bizonyos Zwack udvari orvos készítette negyvenféle gyógyfű és gyökér felhasználásával, tölgyfahordós érleléssel 1790-ben a gyomorpanaszokkal küszködő II. József király számára. A legenda szerint, amikor az uralkodó megkóstolta, így kiáltott fel: Das ist ein Unicum! Innen eredne az ital neve.

This liquor with its bitter yet harmonious aroma was originally made as a herbal remedy. Enhancing both appetite and digestion, it is therefore a popular drink both before and after meals.
It can be drunk iced, from an iced glass, or at room temperature from a brandy glass. It can even be drunk hot, in which case it activates the body's stored energies. In other words it can be drunk at any time and in any way you want. Unicum has only one secret: its recipe.
The drink was first made in 1790 by a certain court doctor called Zwack, who used forty different herbs and roots and matured it in an oak barrel. It was made for Joseph II, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, who suffered with stomach complaints. According to legend when the monarch tasted the drink he exclaimed: 'Das ist ein Unicum!' ('This is unique!') Thus it received its name.
The first 'Unicum factory' started production in 1840 in Pest, and together with the secret recipe it is still the property of the Zwack family. (Though the continuity was broken for 40 years after World War II when the factory was nationalised.)
The Unicum comes in a distinictive, globe-shaped bottle with a cross on the label indicating that it contains a unique drink capable of healing both body and soul.
